my dad used to play nick's records when i was growing up and i never really paid any attention to them, they were just on all the time, when i turned 14, i sort of nicked all his vinyl and had a ritual of playing a new record every day, i turned 16 and was going through all the teenage shit and i put on Bryter Layter, it was a religious moment, it's so distinictive, the first time i sat and listened to nick drake, life had taken something from my childhood and given it to me when i most needed it. i don't like this boom in his popularity, i remember when Nick Drake was the name on 3 of the most beautiful records i owned, records that had fallen on an uninterested public, they were my secret, then of course that advert was made and he started selling more records and since it's just been gaining, the internet doing everything it can to help. i dunno, it's just that something so personal to me now feels so impersonal and open to the apathetic ear canals of the world.
