Neurosis: "The Word As Law"

Dawne czasy. Rok bodajże 1995 lub 1996. Na pewno nie później.

To co usłyszałem było dla mnie niesamowitym powiewem świeżości i nie zmieniał tego fakt, iż wówczas płyta ta miała juz przynajmniej 5 czy 6 lat, a samo Neurosis zdążyło wydać kolejne płyty i było w szczytowej formie.

Już pierwsze dźwięki zdradzały wyjątkowość, ale też i schematyczność płyty. Dysharmoniczne akordy, riffy wprawdzie jeszcze mocno osadzone w hardcore/punku, ale za to mocno wypchnięty do przodu nerwowo niespokojny bas - tworzyło to niesamowita mieszankę. Z każdym kolejnym utworem z tej płyty miałem wrażenie, że obcuje z czymś ważnym..

"Double edged sword" juz od pierwszych taktów zapowiada kontakt z nerwicą. Chore dźwięki początkowych akordów, następnie ostry atak piłującej gitary i jesteśmy w oku cyklonu. Szaleńczo punktujacy bas często wchodzący na wysokie progi, mocno w ten sposób odcina się od gitarowego tła. Tak gitary są na tej płycie tłem dla Dave Edwardsona. Końcówka utworu zdaje się być typowo hard core`owa.

"The choice" to znów popis Edwardsona. Przytłumiony początek i dość zwyczajny riff, szybko ustępują miejsca dziwnym, niepokojącym dźwiękom basu, do kŧórego dołączają pozostali członkowie zespołu. W połowie numeru wszystko staje się nagle melodyjne jakby na piknik wybierała się dziwna wycieczka pensjonariuszy szpitala w Lubiążu. Na szczęście zespół wraca do niespokojnych dźwięków, a sam utwór kończy się jakby znakiem zapytania.

"Obsequious obsolescence". Początek to wynurzenie się basu ze sprzęgających się gitar, zagęszczająca się perkusja, klimatyczne flażolety i znów Edwardson pokazuje, że chociaż bas ma czterostrunowy, to dźwięków z niego da się wydobyć całkiem sporo i to dość wysokich. Świetnie uzupełniają się dwa wokale - Scotta Kelly`ego i nowego w zespole Steve`a von Tilla. W tym numerze znalazło się tez miejsce na melodie , które choć kojarzą mi się dość heavy metalowo, to jednak odpowiednio budują niespokojny klimat numeru.

"To what end" zaczyna się niczym punk rockowy Morricone, by następnie przejść do klimatów, które mi przywodzą na myśl Amebix. Po porcji hard core`a zespół częstuje nas wyciszeniem jak intra i outra z płyt G-Anx, po czym dochodzi do fajnego transowego patentu, który jednak trwa zdecydowanie zbyt krótko. Mniej więcej w połowie łapiemy się na przyjemne hard corowe przyspieszenie z solóweczką (?) gitary i znów zwalniamy. Gęsto, ciężko, mrocznie, jak nocą na szkockim wrzosowisku. W tym numerze trochę się dzieje. A to zapętlamy się na transowych pasażach basu, a to gitary wwiercają się w mózg flażoletami, a to znów chłopaki przypominają nam o swoich korzeniach. Koniec numeru, to wyrzygany krzyk wsparty gitarą wchodzącą w sprzęg. Nikt nie mówił, ze to muzyka dla zdrowych...

"Tommorow reality" zaczyna się rzężeniem gitary w tle, na pierwszym planie mamy natomiast... melodię. Jest w niej troche smutku i hard core`owego pazura - pazura, który pózniej przejmuje kontrolę nad numerem, nawet basowa solówka, choć niespokojna trzyma się wciąż tej konwencji. Dla mnie ten numer to kontynuacja stylistyki "Pain Of MInd" i leży mi najmniej. Chyba bym nie zauważył jego braku.

"Common inconsistencies". Zaczyna się świetnie. Szumem jakby nakładających się fal radiowych i smutną gitarą. Nieco mechaniczny początkowy riff przeradza się później w dość niespokojny patent, z krążącym nerwowo basem, krzyczanymi wokalami (czy ja tam w tle słyszę kobiecy głos?) i tym transem prowadzi nas do zakończenia. Wybrzmiewanie, może troche zwyczajne, ale pasujące jak nic do tego numeru.

"Insensitivity". Mój faworyt. Króciutki numer, ale patent Edwardsona jest po prostu genialny. Krąży niczym paranoik po szpitalnym pokoju. Ciarki przechodzą po plecach, w szczególności, gdy numer kończy się w zawieszeniu i pozostaje myśl: "ej, to już koniec?", a palec naciska przycisk "cofnij". I tak puszczamy sobie ten mniej niż minutowy utwór znów, i znów, i znów i tak bez końca...

"Blisters". Kończący płytę numer zaczyna się jak romantyczna hc/punkowa balladka, ale emocje w nim narastają, wraz z cięższymi riffami prowadzącymi do wysokich pochodów basu i w efekcie zawodzącą solówką gitary. Do końca jest wprawdzie nieco monotonnie, ale powrót do balladowego patentu wycisza zakończenie płyty powodując, że czujemy się nader nieswojo.

Wprawdzie reedycje tej płyty zawierają jeszcze 6 numerów, ale to powtórka z chyba najlepszych numerów z "Pain Of MInd", singli i cover na deser. Nie mniej jednak płyta ta dla mnie kończy się przed bonusami.

Zdecydowanie, "The Word As Law" nie jest najlepszą płytą Neurosis. Nie jest też w sumie w żaden sposób ten krążek wybitny. Słychać wprawdzie, że jest to zespół z wielkim potencjałem, ale tutaj jest przede wszystkim bardzo dużo schematu. Słychać w tym echa Discharge, Amebix, amerykańskiego hard core lat `80. Ale przede wszystkim słychać Edwardsona. Świetnego instrumentalistę, który wrzuca w dość przeciętne numery niesamowity klimat, szarpie emocjami i wypełnia głośniki swoja wszechobecnością.

Dlaczego więc o tej płycie pisze? Nie ukrywam, że Neurosis to jeden z najważniejszych zespołów jakie kiedykolwiek słyszałem. Nie pozostał bez wpływu na mój późniejszy gust, a "The Word As Law" jest pierwszym krążkiem Neurosis jaki usłyszałem. Wprawdzie była to wówczas piracka (?) kaseta punkowego wydawnictwa BPMS pozyczona od kolegi z zespołu w którym wówczas grałem, ale tak dowiedziałem się, że taki zespół istnieje. A kilka miesięcy później zostałem posiadaczem "Through Silver In Blood". I już nic nie było takie same.

Le Roadburn Festival est devenu au fil des années un événement musical européen de référence en matière de scène Rock/sludge/doom/post-hardcore. L'édition 2009, fêtant les 10 ans du festival, a été offerte en offrande au dieu Neurosis, qui a pu inviter les groupes de son choix, composant pour l'occasion un programme qui a taché plus d'un slip dans l'auditoire avec des groupes comme Mono, Earth, Grails, Shora, Minsk ou encore A Storm of Light. Il a d'ailleurs été souvent question du Roadburn sur Pelecanus, je pense surtout aux 2 énormes bootlegs audios de Mono et Shora que je vous conseille si vous ne les avez pas encore choppé, ou encore la sortie du sublime pack DVD/Vinyl de Year of No Light. Aujourd'hui c'est une petite sélection des meilleures vidéos lives de l'édition 2009 pêchées sur Youtube que je vous propose.
