Neil Percival Kenneth Robert Ragland Young, mais conhecido por Neil Young (12 de novembro de 1945) é um músico e compositor de origem canadense, que fez sua carreira nos Estados Unidos. Conhecido por sua voz anasalada e suas letras pungentes, Young é uma lenda do rock americano, mas seu estilo musical transita entre o folk e o country rock, alternando com álbuns mais “pesados” em que algumas músicas se aproximam do hard rock, com guitarras “sujas” e longos solos improvisados com muita distorção. Seus shows são verdadeiras celebrações de rock usualmente acompanhado da banda Crazy Horse, que o acompanha desde o início da carreira.

Neil Young veio de Toronto, no Canadá, em 1965, onde tocava no circuito folk local. Com Stephen Stills, formou o Buffalo Springfield, uma banda de folk-rock inovadora, mas que na época teve apenas uma relativa repercussão (seu trabalho só foi de fato reconhecido mais tarde). Quando o grupo acabou em 1968, Young partiu para a carreira solo. De seus álbuns iniciais, “Everybody Knows this is nowhere”(69) e o essencial “After the Gold Rush”(70) foram aclamados pela crítica, ao mesmo tempo em que aceitou participar do Crosby, Stills & Nash, como membro efetivo. Acrescido de Young no nome, o quarteto fez muito sucesso nos anos 69/70, principalmente o álbum “Deja Vu”. Após uma turne americana, separaram-se amigavelmente e Neil Young voltaria ocasionalmente a gravar com os ex-companheiros.

O espetacular sucesso comercial de “Harvest”(72), torna Young um “superstar” do folk-rock, mas a morte de dois amigos seus neste mesmo ano,o guitarrista Danny Whytten e o roadie Bruce Berry o colocam numa longa fase depressiva, em que envolve-se com drogas e álcool, acabando por influenciar seu trabalho.

crazy horse to neil young is very much like the band to dylan. anyone who says that either of these bands is just a backing band has little, if any, appreciation of music and should stay with Britney or Paris.

Neil with Crazy Horse is surely different from any other combination he has played in. I've seen him live with Booker T & the MGs, Pearl Jam, Crazy Horse, the current unnamed electric band and solo. All has been fantastic, but the shows with the horse has some unexplainable extra dimension. Smell the horse.

I add "& Crazy Horse" simply because it's a different beast to the rest of his work, even his other electric work. The passion and the delivery is the same all around, but something special happens when he's with those guys. To try and explain it is useless. The best any of us can do is appreciate all of his work, to realize how special his connection with Ralph, Billy, and Poncho (not to forget Danny as well, RIP) is.

@ iKvlt: Danny Whitten actually wrote Come On Baby Let's Go Downtown, featured on Tonight's the Night, which is incidentally credited as a Neil Young album ^^

Well, about ten albums, maybe more, are credited to "Neil Young & Crazy Horse", so obviously Neil thinks they're important enough to credit over and over again. Because of that, I'd say it's pretty safe to say that's how we should tag such albums.

Neil Young wrote literally everything. As far as I'm aware of no one else in Crazy Horse wrote ANYTHING for Neil Young & Crazy Horse. I'm not saying that they're bad musicians or anything but they are a backing band.

& The Crazy Horses sounds a lot better than & Crazy Horse. It sounds like Neil Young plays with an Indian chief on drums which is misleading because it's actually just (unfortunately) a backing band.
