...alright, enough Shakespearean English for today. Out of my innate curiosity for all things statistical, I decided to delve deep into the wonderful world of last.fm related tests. Um...alright...no use denying it, I felt rather bored and came across these tests while skimming through some more or less generic journals here on last.fm. So I thought: "Well, if other people turn their humble test results into full-fledged journal entries, why shouldn't I?" And so here we are now, ent...er...without any further meaningless ado, let us begin.
Chapter 1 - I'll show ya just how extensive my musical taste is. You PUNK!
URL: http://keef.co.nr/?page=lastfm_test1
Description: The script lists the user's top 20 overall artists and lists the 8 most similar artists to each one, then deletes any repeated artists. The idea is to see how varied your taste is, a score of 9 is extremely unvaried while 160 represents an extremely varied one.

[Due to it having been canceled, I couldn't get any updated score for this test. Ah well. Would've probably been even more off the chart.]
Chapter 2 - Mainstream? Me? No way.
URL: mainstream.vincentahrend.com
Description: The Mainstream-O-Meter calculates your mainstreamness by comparing the listener count of your favorite bands to the average listener count of the five bands who have the most listeners among Last.fm-users.
Of course, the results may be different from what you would've thought of as mainstream. Some bands which have a lot of listeners in real life don't have a large fanbase on Last.fm since people who use this service tend to be younger and more experienced with computers than the average person. Because of the restricted number of users, some genres like classical music and countries like India or the People's Republic of Chine are really underrepresented on Last.fm.
Since some users listen to all of their top artists equally while others have one top artist they listen to 99 percent of the time, the Meter also takes into account how much you listen to these bands in comparison. The artist you listen to most always gets a weight of 100%, while every other artist's play count in your profile is then compared to this.
My Result:
Azel_of_AnH's top artists:
Azel_of_AnH is 8.35 % mainstream
[Note the fact that 9 out of my 30 top artists are actually 0% mainstream. Yay.]
-----
[Seems like the nice formatting has up and gone MIA, but hey, who needs all those clicky connections anyway?]

27. Dargaard 1.71 % 30,692 26 %

29. The String Quartet 2.6 % 46,588 26 %
30. Mutsuhiko Izumi 0.13 % 2,244 26 %
12.76 % mainstream
[Despite some major changes in my Top 30 Artists, they still contain exactly 9 artists which are 0% mainstream. Why the big rise then? Obviously the fact that there's a lot of people who like the great music by Bright Eyes and Jack Johnson and some catching up with previously unheard material from LP and SOAD are the two main reasons. Could still be worse, right?]
Chapter 3 - "AEP" - what in blazes is THAT?
URL: http://www.davethemoonman.com/lastfm/aep.php
Description: AEP is a measure of how diverse your music tastes are, based on the top 50 artists in your Last.fm profile. It was invented by
C26000 and you can find full details about how it is computed
here. AEP is a number, usually below 5. Roughly speaking, if it is greater than 4 you have very diverse taste in music, if it greater than 3 then you have fairly diverse taste in music. At the other end of the scale, if it is less that 0, you are probably an obsessive fan of your top artist. If it less than -10, you are probably a fake top fan. Depending on which end of the scale you are, you can join either the
We Don't Have Exponential Profiles or the
We Have Exponential Profiles group.
My Result:

[Ooooh, a picture. How eye-candyish.]
-----
[Er...damn. Back then I kind of got so carried away by the precarious thought of allowing myself the luxury to use a PICTURE for displaying some three digit number I absolutely forgot to note what my actual AEP was in May of 2007. As you can see, the current one resides at 3.76 which should be lower by quite a big amount which I blame on my uncanny passion for anything Bright Eyes as well as for Takeharu Ishimoto. Man, I never would have imagined my profile could get this exponential.]
Chapter 4 - 折衷主義 (Eclecticism) [These are Kanji, you know.]
URL: http://anthony.liekens.net/pub/scripts/last.fm/eclectic.php
Description: Take your top 20 artists. For each of these artists, collect the top 5 similar artists. The resulting number of unique artists is your
eclectic score. If the score is small (extreme = 5) your musical preferences are very limited, and if it is large (larger than 80, extreme = 100), then you have an eclectic musical preference.
My Result:
My eclectic score is currently
96/100
The 96 related artists for my profile are ACIDMAN, ASIAN KUNG-FU GENERATION, Adeline Fargier, After Forever, Anajo, Antonio Vivaldi, Astral Doors, Atsushi Hashimoto (Kai), Atsushi Mayumi, Audy, Axxis, BEAT CRUSADERS, BONNIE PINK, BUMP OF CHICKEN, Bauhaus, Beatsteaks, BeautifulDay, Boohwal, Brendan Perry, Christina Stürmer, Cocteau Twins, Counting Crows, Cowbird, Cradle of Filth, Dashboard Confessional, Die Ärzte, Do As Infinity, Doro, Dua, EGO-WRAPPIN', Ello, Evanescence, Every Little Thing, Fall Out Boy, Farin Urlaub, Foo Fighters, GLAY, Galneryus, Georg Friedrich Händel, Goo Goo Dolls, HIDE, Hootie & the Blowfish, Horan Chiaka (Nai) & Tomomi Kitagami (Mea), Johann Sebastian Bach, Juli, KONAMI, Kettcar (2), Kumiko Higa (Mandora Boy), L'Arc~en~Ciel, Lisa Gerrard, Ludwig van Beethoven, Mellowyear, Monday満ちる, Mondo Grosso, My Aunt Mary, Namco Sound Team, Nell, Nightwish, Olli Schulz & der Hund Marie, Panic! [I tend to think this is about the same as the extensive musical taste test, but come on, "eclecticism" sounds *way better* than that, doesn't it? Heh.]
-----
[Not that much of a change over here...]

http://anthony.liekens.net/pub/scripts/last.fm/supereclectic.php. My lowdown is as follows:]
Description: Take your top 50 artists. For each of these artists, collect the top 20 similar artists (where the artist itself is the #1 most similar). The resulting number of unique artists is your
super-eclectic score. You can compute your own score at
http://anthony.liekens.net/pub/scripts/last.fm/supereclectic.php

Chapter 5 - One to rule them all: Tag Cloud Generation
URL: http://anthony.liekens.net/pub/scripts/last.fm/index.php
Description:A musical user tag cloud is a textual depiction of one's listening habits, here based on musical social networking service Last.fm. The weight of a tag in the cloud is determined by the play counts of top artists in the user's profile, and the top tags for those artists, labeled as such by the Last.fm community.
Inclusion of these tag clouds in a user's profile increases the readability, since now it is often unclear what musical genres a user is listening to. Provided with a tag cloud, a visitor gets a quick overview of the user's musical preferences. Last.fm should consider putting tag clouds in user profile pages!
My Result:
[I absolutely dig the whole concept of tag clouds. This result probably contains the most (only?) interesting information of them all. Really neat/1337. Your choice.]
-----
[Might be my eyes or the fact it's gotten way too late for any kind of reasonable, meaningful comment yet again, but I can't help thinking these two tag clouds still look way too similar considering all the time that has passed and the mad amount of new music I've been listening too. Guess it's true habits don't break easily, eh?]
My Result:
Whoo, done. My apologies for not removing all those (artist)-Tags [and thus having like 180 artist connections for this journal], but it's about 3:00 at night and my only concern right now is to post this and finally go to bed. Expect some insanely exciting and intricately sculptured boatloads of journal entries in the future. Also, I WILL unveil the secret to the meaning of life right here in this journal. Some day.
