Modest Mouse - No One's First and You're Next

Somewhere in between having a #1 album in the States, & releasing more of what so many have loved hearing, Isaak Brock’s latest release hasn’t progressed as much as it has taken a look back at the last couple of years. If you’ve never heard Modest Mouse before, I strongly don’t recommend this latest EP release as a starting point. It’s just a couple of b-sides & I’d say it was only created for the die hard fans, like myself.

Constantly throughout this album you’re reminded of why these tracks never made the LP’s, for either not suiting or not completed projects. “Satellite Skin” makes for an obvious single like “Float On” & “Dashboard” before it but with less thought put into the track at the time with rough nonsense lyrics like “Just like being my own solar system, Doing good things and then totally eclipsing”. If anyone can explain that better to me please do, but last I checked solar systems don’t have eclipses. And then all of a sudden the song just stops. It calls for unfinished work.

Other tracks like “Guilty Cocker Spaniels” fall somewhere in between “Fly Trapped In A Jar” at the start & than subtly becomes similar to “Truckers Atlas”, though not anywhere near as good as those two, lacking strong metaphors that Brock is usually so clever at, & imagery.

“Autumn Beds” could have fit quite well into The Moon & Antarctica, if only every track made for that album wasn’t already amazing enough. While “Perpetual Motion Machine” doesn’t really sound like anything musically, that I’ve heard from Modest Mouse before. Although “History Sticks To Your Feet” sounds like a rough example of a new album I could look forward to hearing sometime soon!

It’s hard to call this a b-sides record (which is what it is) when even the tracks that didn’t make the LP’s are still everything a die hard fan would want to hear from Modest Mouse. This is simply a little treat for people like myself. This is no Around The Well. These tracks, from start to finish, are genuinely fantastic & have been thought out just as much as if No One’s First And You’re Next could have been an LP. If you don’t know Brock, do some research & get back to these gems when you can appreciate them more, after waiting & following Modest Mouse’s every move for as long as I have.

Last week was really cool because we had twenty people contribute to our post! But, our anlaytics show that hundreds of people read it. Why is that? I'm not sure. But I feel that it is - at least in some part - due to the fact that so often the creation and delivery of art is a one way street. I want to change that; so I'd like to invite you to take a moment to do three things:
