DOUR FESTIVAL 2009 : FIRST NAMES !
Mar 12 2009, 10h22 por dourfestival

Here we go again: for the next two and a half months we will regularly update you with news, confirmations or changes regarding the 21st Dour Festival It will be held on July 16th, 17th, 18th and 19th on the Plaine De La Machine a Feu site in the village of Dour, Belgium.
Last week we confirmed the presence of Aphex Twin + Hecker for a unique performance and this week we are happy and proud to add a few more names to our electro, techno, drum'n'bass, rap, hip-hop, rock and indie rock stages.
In the next few weeks we'll give you the names of bands that are confirmed to play the festival in the reggae, dub, punk, hardcore, ska genres as well Dour does it all: quality AND quantity as well as diversity and it all comes at the very reasonable price of 85 euros for 4 days of concerts and 200 bands.
Hip Hop fans be ready for an exceptional night ! Mix Master Mike (Beastie Boys), DJ Muggs (Cypress Hill), DJ JS-1 (Rock Steady Crew), Mr Wiggles (Rock Steady Crew) & Rahzel (The Roots) will play during 5 hours to introduce you to the 5 elements of hip-hop : Rap, Beat-box, Break-danse, Graffiti and Dj'ing. The Rap made in France will be aptly represented by the famous IAM from Marseille.
To make you dance through the dour night:
* Digitalism, Andy C and Venetian Snares will all be back to try and even better their Dour07 sets which have become the stuff of legend
* Andy C will be joined by Chase & Status for our Drum'n Bass night on Thursday July 16th
* Igor Cavalera (ex-Sepultura, Cavalera conspiracy) will bring his drumkit to play live with his hiphop/electro project Mixhell, which he created with his wife Laima Leyton
* Kid brothers of Daft Punk, cousins of Justice, Does It Offend You, Yeah? Will bring its noisy electro to get you jumping for more
* Their music is played by DJ's all around the world and we're happy to introduce them to Dour for the first time : Dusty Kid et The Proxy are not to be missed
* If you like your electropunk to be sung by girls, you're in for a treat thanks to Crystal Castles, Kap Bambino and Thunderheist
* N-Type is our first confirmation for our Dubstep night
On the guitar front :
* Mercury Rev and Bob Log III will be back for some highly anticipated shows
* You want Experimental indie rock with an animal theme ? Sure ! Have some Caribou and Deerhoof
* Those of you who enjoyed Gogol Bordello last year shouldn't miss O'Death. Their wild country-punk hails from New York and is completely bonkers !
* In Belgium, papa dada have won all possible talents shows and competitions this year. We're very happy to add them to our line-up this summer.
There we go, that's about 10% of the final line-up that's confirmed.
Tickets are on sale via our website: http://ticketshop.dourfestival.be (85 euros + 15 euros for the camping site). -

It is a history of DJ and Turntablism and a good one but it is deeper than that. It is about culture and art. DJ Shadows in an amazing basement of records gets down right deep in the philosophical sense. And of course there are performances form the best turntablist out there.

The Pros and Cons of Vinyl
Jul 19 2008, 18h24 por silverpsycho13
I have been thinking about this a lot recently, probably because at the music shop I'm working at this summer there is A LOT of vinyl, and almost every one of my co-workers still hordes vinyl. So: what's the big deal???
PROS:
-Supposedly there is better sound quality.
My response: Back in November I bought 6 brand new LPs (not used LPs) and listened to them on my dad's phonograph. They did not sound "warmer," as everyone says. I did not notice any difference at all! And actually there was quite a bit of crackling, which was quite annoying. And yes I was listening with a nice set of speakers, not tinny little iPod headphones.
-Lots of rare obscure and weird LPs from long long ago have not been reissued on CD, so if you like to listen to weirdo obscure rare music from long long ago I guess LPs are for you. I guess also this has to do with the "culture" of "crate digging" at thrift stores, garage sales, and independent records stores. Which admittedly has lead to some great artists:
-Without Vinyl there would be no DJ Shadow, Mix Master Mike, DJ QBert, Rob Swift, Cut Chemist, X-Ecutioners, and related turntablists.
-If you're living on a budget vinyl is usually cheaper. Especially used vinyl. Usually it's only 1 or 2 bucks at a thrift store or a record store. The one I work at, for example, recently had used vinyl by these artists for under 2 bucks: The Beatles, Elton John, Steve Martin, Stevie Wonder, The Carrs, John Denver, Talking Heads, and tons of other well-known (and obscure) artists.
-If you like rare b-sides and like to collect them, lots of artists sell vinyl with exclusive bonus tracks on them.
CONS:
-As above, Crackling.
-It is not easy to get vinyl onto your ipod. You have to buy some fancy equipment and software, or find a shop in your city that will digitize vinyl, usually at a fee.
-Environmentally unfriendly. Due to the largeness of a new vinyl record, there's much more shrink wrap on a new LP than a new CD.
-Easily damaged by water and mold and environmental pests. (CDs can be washed with soap and water to clean them)
-DJs (like party DJs not ones like DJ Shadow) have a much slimmer selection of what they can take with them to a party. I was reading an interview with Peanut Butter Wolf and he said that in order to really cater to the feel of a room of people you need to have a much wider selection of songs to play to get them having a good time, and that's where laptops and MP3s come in.
So although there are 5 pros and 5 cons up there, I am still anti-vinyl because I love my iPod and I love being able to have tens of thousands of songs at my convenience. If you encode your MP3s with Apple's AAC and import at a higher bit rate like 256 or 320 I swear to god the quality is just as good as what I heard from the vinyl I bought in November, and there's no crackling! Also, a lot of the so-called sound quality drawbacks of MP3 are caused by the shitty quality of iPod headphones and even shittier cheapo 5 dollar headphones sold by Walgreens. Buy a nice pair of headphones and you really won't be able to tell the difference between vinyl and CDs/MP3s.
