Miranda Sex Garden was a band from London, England. Originally a trio of madrigal singers, their first album, Madra, was entirely a cappella, with the songs all based on traditional English verse. By their second release, Iris, the sound evolved into a blend of their madrigal-styled vocals with sounds reminiscent of gothic rock, darkwave, ethereal wave and industrial music. Their sound became increasingly dark and sophisticated over the years. Around the time of their third album, Fairytales of Slavery, they said they wanted to create music that evoked a “seductive garden of earthly delights, full of color and chaos”.

I've seen them twice in total, and neither time was on purpose. I just happened to be in the same place at the same time. The first time was at uni in 91, I think. I remember they didn't go down too well there... The uni had a large number of middle class kids who'd liked shit like The Shamen and PWEI a couple of years before and shifted on to mainstream fodder like jamiroquai , Blur, Oasis, Pulp and of course Radiohead... Wasn't much space in their tiny minds for experimentation. Second time was a year or so later, somewhere in the midlands. Can't remember the name of the place. The first time, they were all a cappella, very dark, very moody. I remember the atmosphere became hostile and those who did applaud seemed embarrassed about it. They took off after about three songs. ...

At the second gig I visited, I was in a particularly goth phase at the time. I remember the atmosphere was much more in tune since it was a goth night club. They had their fans out in numbers and said they had a new album coming up, Iris or something. This time, their voices were accompanied by a sort of electronica sound IIRC not like the album, but different from their original sound. I think they had some synths or sequencers going. I remember the stage was really atmospheric, blacklights, dark surrounds and a heaving, swaying crowd. They kinda, sorta reminded me of a sexed up All about Eve with less Irish folk and more blood, mixed in with some of the more intelligent Siouxsie stuff (sorry, it was a long time ago, I can't remember much of what went on in the haze of distant, hedonism clouded memory.) They were one of those bands that never seemed to get the recognition they deserved. Such is life, I guess. I do feel lucky that I've seen them, though. Peace.
