This is an astonishing piece of work. The late great percussionist Pierre Moerlen was heavily involved in this - so if you like Incantations check out anything by Pierre Moerlen's Gong as well!

wonderful, impressive, not aging after 30 years - this is the best Mike Oldfield ever did (tightly followed by Tubular Bells I, Ommadawn and Hergest Ridge); he never reached this height again

I'm sure there are similarities as well but I personally think that Incantations' several climaxes build up relatively fast, with more variety and richness of melody than on any of the previous ones - it's a musical Kama Sutra, really :) I mean, he hasn't given up on the folky undertones but it feels like there is more intensity and energy spread throughout the album; he's definitely taking a step away from the heavy structures of Hergest Ridge and Ommadawn.. .they unfold quite slowly compared to Incantations.

Could you compare this album to any of the three albums before or is it completely different?

Side Four has those lovely twinkly xylophones sounds that STILL reduced me to joy and tears 30 years later. To those trying to find his Virgin catalogue, read the below (from Oldfield website) "Fans old and new can celebrate the great man’s work with a special release of his classic, multiplatinum selling album Tubular Bells, out on 8th June through the Mercury Music Group/Universal Music Catalogue. This is the first classic album to be released from Oldfield’s back catalogue, which was transferred from Virgin to Mercury/Universal in 2008" - translated as Universal will gradually re-release his catalogue over a few years....

I've discovered this one in recent weeks(such a shame). At first I was listening his bestknown masterpieces such as Five Miles Out or Tubular Bells(II, III, 2003), but Incantations are also awesome and I can't believe, that they are so underrated. After first experience with that, it has become part of my favorites. It's melancholy album, but beautiful indeed. I love the end of Part Two and Part Four. Perfect work!

People should like this album more. This is probably my favourite Oldfield together with Ommadawn. But this album is so often dismissed and underappreciated which to me is shocking since I play and love it so much!

Oldfield's masterpiece, together with Amarok.. It may be repetitive, but it is great.

Agree totally, this must be the best Mike Oldfield's work to date !!! Absolutely fascinating, musical orgasm, shovers down my spine at certain moments of those tracks.Terribly overlooked !!!

Criminally underlooked. This, in my eyes, is one of the greatest instrumental works of all time, even better than Tubular Bells.
