Inicialmente, a banda ganhou popularidade na Europa tocando em festivais como Les Inrockuptibles, Wintercase, e South by Southwest.
Formada em 1999 por um grupo de estudantes de jazz da University of North Texas, a formação original inclui Tim Smith (vocal, guitarra, teclado), McKenzie Smith (bateria), Paul Alexander (baixo), Eric Nichelson (guitarra), and Evan Jacobs (teclado).
O primeiro projeto do Midlake - com o nome de The Cornbread All-Stars — consistia nos gêneros funk/jazz fortemente influenciado por Herbie Hancock
Depois, a banda começa a entrar mais no indie rock. Tim Smith larga o saxophone e como a escrever letras com forte influência de bandas como Jethro Tull, Radiohead, Travis e Grandaddy.
O álbum Bamnan and Slivercork, lançado em 2004, foi uma produção caseira e masteurizada na Abbey Road Studios. Isto indicou um direcionamento para o lo-fi psicodélico eletrônico, abrindo-se para influências como Grandaddy e The Flaming Lips.
Em 2006, o Midlake finalizou o álbum The Trials of Van Occupanther que recebeu boas críticas.
