MUS1030 Music Journal* 2: The Stones’ take on Buddy Holly and the
“Bo Diddley Beat”
As was common in the early years for many a rock group, The Rolling Stones’ earliest singles were written by others. This, their third overall and first in the United States, was released in early 1964. Written by
Buddy Holly and initially recorded by
The Crickets in 1957, The Rolling Stones made this one their own, driving the “
Bo Diddley beat” of this song even harder. To give added color to the simple, non-changing chords strummed out by
Keith Richards,
Mick Jagger adds maracas to his emphatic, syllabic singing, while
Brian Jones weaves a wailing harmonica over top and around the monophonic vocal line.
Bill Wyman’s bass is apparently the only electric instrument, and lilts up and down within a relatively narrow range underneath the guitar.
Charlie Watts is playing only a floor tom, and it is either he or Mick that adds a tambourine for embellishment. Most interestingly, the offbeats are hit by syncopated hambone handclaps, but I’m not sure whose hands were free for that. A lot of instrumentation for a relatively simple song, and I’m not sure how they fit it all in without someone else lending a hand in the studio!
This song itself is a straight four-on-the-floor (4/4 time) 12-bar blues. There is a single-bar strummed intro, followed by the first two verses. A 9-bar instrumental break with a high harmonica solo follows, and the song concludes with one last verse and, ironically, multiple voices harmonizing on the lyrics “not fade away” in a
fade out. The lyrics are of the “love blues” variety, the singer imploring the object of his affection to give her love to him, his own love “bigger than a Cadillac” (ahem).
It moves along at a moderately fast-paced tempo, but the “Bo Diddley Beat” has the effect of driving the song forward with an almost salsa feel. “bomp-ba-domp-ba-domp, ba-domp-domp” (think, “shave and a hair cut, two bits”). The whole song from intro through fade out, is less than two minutes, yet it proved to be their first Top 5 hit in Great Britain.
Lyrics to “Not Fade Away”
I wanna tell you how it’s gonna be
You’re gonna give your love to me
I’m gonna love you night and day
Love is love and not fade away
Well, love is love and not fade away
And my love bigger than a Cadillac
I try to show it and you drive me back
Your love for me has got to be real
For you to know just how I feel
Love real not fade away
Well, love real not fade away
Yeah
[instrumental break]
I wanna tell you how it’s gonna be
You’re gonna give your love to me
Love that lasts more than one day
Well, love is love and not fade away
Well, love is love and not fade away
Well, love is love and not fade away
Well, love is love and not fade away
(fading)
Not fade away
Not fade away
