    Peace & Love, Borlänge. June 25-27, 2009

Day 1: Me, my girlfriend and friends arrived to a warm and sunny Borlänge at noon on thursday for the Peace & Love festival 2009. Checked in to our hotel, had some McDonalds burgers and then relaxed in the shade under a bush with some wine for a couple of hours.

The first show was Dave Kusworth, he played an acoustic gig in a beer tent. Small crowd, I guess around 10-15 plus around 30-40 people waiting in line for the toilet by the stage. Nice to see him play the Jacobites tunes TocarPin Your Heart To Me and Kings And Queens.

After a couple of hours of wine we went to see Thåström... I've seen him a lot of times, first in Imperiet, Peace Love & Pitbulls and solo and have never disappoited. A great mix of new songs with some older Imperiet and Ebba Grön songs. I haven't seen him that energetic in a long time. He was on fire and the manic poses and gestures from the Imperiet era was back. Great show.

After Thåström we had to rush to the biggest stage for Mötley Crüe, childhood heroes... It was very crowded and the large TV monitors was just used to show silly videos and computer graphics. Didn't see much, just listening to Mötley Crüe live is not a very good idea. It gets very obvious Vince Neil is an awful live singer, I love his voice on the albums but it just doesn't work live. Halfway through I found a better spot and enjoyed the rest of the show. In the end it was an ok fun show, if mostly for nostaglic reasons. And Tommy Lee didn't get as much time to make a fool of himself as the last time I saw them. That's a big plus!

Walking back to our hotel we heard people around us saying that Michael Jackson died...

Day 2: In the morning the newspapers confirmed that Michael Jackson actually had died the day before. Spent the day laying in the shade from a tree before a spoken word performance by Henry Rollins. Very entertaining and thought provoking, he talked of pretty much everything, high and low... travels, prejudices, religion, sexism, war/peace and of course Wacko Jacko.

Then it was time to get back to the wine before watching Gogol Bordello. it was crazy, super high energy gypsy punk. One of the absolute highlights of the festival. So cool with accordion, fiddle and girls with giant drums stapped to their chests. A great great live band with an unbelievable energy. I feel sorry for those who missed it.

Next band was Turbonegro, a great band that seldom disappoints. Euroboy is a fantastic guitar player too.

Our last show for the night was Stefan Sundström with Bongo Brains. It looked like Stefan had lots of fun on stage singing in English, he looked like he was acting out his teenage dreams of being Mick Jagger. Fun but I can't say I cared for the music that much.

Day 3: Miss Li started off the day in front of her hometown crowd. The setlist was switched around a lot starting with TocarOh Boy. An unusally short set without surprises but great nontheless.

After the show at Liseberg the month before that lacked the usual energy this show gave back double. 100% energy from both Linda and the band from start to finnish. On a bad day they are still good but on a good day they are probably the best live band in sweden at the moment.

Next up Electric Boys, I loved them when I was around 15 and they just made a come back. Great live band and Conny Bloom is a great frontman. Nice to see them back together. I felt that they didn't have enough great songs to fill the set though. I hope they decide to record a new album.

We had to miss the last Electric Boys songs to get to Hajen (Amanda Bergman) in time. She played on a small, steaming hot stage indoors. An intimate magical show of only 5-6 songs. I had contacted her online asking for more of her songs so after the show I met her and she gave me a very nice CD with handmade sleeve. A very limited edition of 1! Thanks again Amanda!

That's about it... We checked out Faith No More for a while but I got bored pretty quick. Loved them when I was 17. Not so much now.
Great festival though and fantastic weather.

    More Pics!
The CD Hajen made for me... :)

    Ago 24 2009, 14h38 por Bertels

Sat 22 Aug – Prinsengracht Concert 2009 Prinsengracht, Amsterdam.

Coach Bertels is known for his exquisite taste for cultural events, for several years now Coach is a true fan of the annual Prinsengracht Concert and since last year his intention is to see it live, so Coach Bertels got up early did some cleaning in his Cube, two loads of laundry and all of this whilst listening to delicious vinyl records.
Against all odds nothing strange happened and Coach was really pleased to finish all that washing, scrubbing and ironing. Now the time came to close the door and head for the great city of Leiden for some strolling over the Saturday market. Suddenly Coach got a reminder on his phone for a livingroom concert in Leiden at three o clock that afternoon, Coach forgot this gig completely and was kind of pissed that he now had to go to the Prinsengracht Concert, why can’t people just split up and go separate ways? Luckily Bertels found a nice record to buy and forget the sorrow, Udo Jurgens, “Das Goldene Album”, the best songs from this guy on one vinyl disc. Then Coach went to the station, bought a round trip ticket and entered the train to Amsterdam Central Station. Arriving there just thirty minutes later, Coach immediately went searching for two record stores he looked up on the internet. One of them is located across the street from the bakery where Bertels him mum used to work for some time. Record Friend is a very nice record shop with a great assortment of old and new records in effectively filed compartments. Coach was in Vinyl heaven! Some great Nits albums were bought: “Hat”, “Adieu Sweet Bahnhof” and “New Flat”. Then Coach looked a little more and found the fantastic “Primitive Cool” album by Mick Jagger. Did you walk cool in the sixties daddy? Did you fight in the war? Man what a historic piece of work! And this specific album that Bertels was holding was in mint condition, brand new, never used since it was released in 1993. Coach was very content and went for a beer at the Dam Square, where he checked on the whereabouts of Kronos, who was driving around the city for an hour already to find a parking space. Kronos finally found a place to park his car and came from the suburbs to the city centre, not knowing exactly how to get back again. Forget all that, time for a beer! It is always great to watch other folks whilst enjoying refreshments at a terrace, good looking girls, unsure tourists and flocks of sailors from strange countries in grotesque looking uniforms combined with the most perfect weather imaginable. After a while Coach wanted to look up the other record store on his list, a very small place near the Prinsengracht specialized in soul, funk and Dance: vinyl for real DJ’s. There were some mainstream records, also second hand but at staggering prices! Ten Euros.s for a mint Mick Jagger album is quite some money but here far worse conditions were twice or more that price! Wax Well Records is a store for folks who want to have specialized stuff for performing. In the meanwhile Kronos was totally occupied calling all his homies and having the weirdest conversations. Coach Bertels and Kronos had already past a dozen lunchrooms as the latter wanted to eat, walking around the block a second time, he couldn’t find a place that fulfilled his criteria. After another thirty minutes Bertels and Kronos stood in front of a pizzeria, but Kronos wanted to sit at the terrace on the other side of the street where a grand café had things like omelet and mussels on the menu. Being seated and receiving the menu from a Polish waitress, Kronos exclaimed: “I’d rather have a pizza!” So both suckers crossed the street again and ordered beers and Calzone. During the heavy and late lunch (it was now five o clock), masses of people streamed onto the Prinsengracht with tables and chairs, cool-boxes filled with food and drinks and all sorts of stuff one needs for a picnic; they were all going to the Prinsengrachtconcert and take all the good places already! Bertels and Kronos finished the folded pizza with everything in it and went to battle, the battle for a good spot. There they were, sitting on the ground between hundreds of folks on chairs. Now the kids version of the concert was in progress and after that it would be a three hours wait until the real concert started. The kids fest was with a kids orchestra, and solo kids accompanied by some artists to give it all a boost that had noting to do with classical music (the kids did great, but every other piece of music had to be pop or hip hop for5 some obscure reason). After quite a while real Amsterdam conversations in the crowd, Kronos went to a nearby supermarket to get some drinks, he came back with an empty Chiquita bananas box to sit on. As the bottles emptied quickly, Bertels also went to the supermarket to buy some bottles of wine and returned with a banana box of his own. During the wait both Bertels and Kronos started to destroy each others boxes and somewhat later Bertels crashed through his. Every now and then people had to move through the dense crowd to get to their seats or boats again, on one occasion a pretty girls carefully stepped over Bertels place as some Amsterdam dude pushed poor Bertels his head against her ass, in a reaction she ass bumped back and everybody laughed as Bertels turned red as a tomato. After this Coach drank some wine in no time he was lame and still had to focus on the concert at hand. First there was an introduction program with a trio on piano, cello and violin. Thy did some great pieces and everybody was quiet, hearing only a far tram and police siren apart from the great music of Mozart, Handel and schubert. Then after a short break the real deal was on, the concert which was broadcasted live on national TV. A small setting of musicians accompanied Danielle De Niese, a famous twentynine year old soprano singer lady from Australia in a beautiful gown. The music was very dreamy and Bertels almost fell asleep, not fully aware of most of the concert. Afterwards the Amsterdam anthem had to be sung by everybody, artists and crowd together. Then the gracht emptied real quick and everybody went to pubs in the city. Kronos managed to contact two girls and the group went to the great lounge bar Weber. Here Bertels and Kronos had difficulties staying awake while the girls desperately tried to keep conversations up. The best thing to do for Bertels at that moment was to just go home, so Coach left and felt real sick in the train. Wine after beer is OK, but a beer after wine is a disaster! Next year things have to better organized (a chair for example) and no more gnome beer for Bertels!

  • CENTRAL BOOKING: With the Stones, Like the Stones

    Jun 22 2009, 23h56 por heyadamo

For me, The Rolling Stones have been a band I respected more than I actually liked. Don’t get me, they are clearly one of rock’n’roll’s most iconic bands and the legacy of the Stones will endure long after I’m dead and buried. But still, I’ve always found their recent stuff quite weak and their overall career spotty. (Admittedly, my disaffection for the blues probably doesn’t help matters in that regard.)

Regardless to how I feel, the Stones clearly have affected many, and affected some far beyond collecting albums or attending shows. Two examples of the long reach of the Stones have reached bookstores: Bill German’s Under Their Thumb and Steven Kurutz's Like a Rolling Stone. The two actually reveal two sides of a coin: one concerns itself with bands that play Rolling Stones songs for a living, while the other details how a Brooklyn teenager managed to infiltrate the inner sanctums of the band, and chronicling their ups and downs for nearly two decades.

For Like a Rolling Stone, Steven Kurutz tackles the musical phenomenon known as tribute bands, where a band is formed and forged not to play originals, but to represent the catalogue of bigger and more popular bands. The bulk of Like a Rolling Stone follows two different Rolling Stones tribute bands: The Blushing Brides and Sticky Fingers. The Sticky Fingers aim more towards recreating both the tunes and the looks of the Stones, where the Brides take the Stones ourvere and put their own spin on it. (The two bands happen to be rivals; the book explains why, somewhat.) Kurutz also takes a chapter or two to investigate tribute bands beyond those indebted to Mick and Keith, including a glimpse at the Dark Star Orchestra who strive to create note-for-note replicias of Grateful Dead concerts. But the main chunk sticks with the Fingers and the Brides, and the text follows them through impressive highs and crippling lows. While the concept alone screams for a satiric, Spinal Tap-esque mocking, the book succeeds because the author refuses to go for the easy punchline. In fact, after reading Like a Rolling Stone, there’s a lot about both bands you end up admiring. Kurutz brings up several points about the validity of tribute bands in general, and the two acts show how much dedication it takes to mimic a rock star in extremely un-rock star locales and situations. Of course, like much of rock’n’roll literature, there are fights, band disputes, shady managements, poor decision making, and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar length stories. In that way, Kurutz’s recollections end up sounding less like echoes of another band’s legacy and more like a common crusade to find the eternal flame of rock’n’roll.

You could imagine that same flame in young Bill German’s eyes after becoming smitten with the music of the Rolling Stones before his teens. In the heyday of punk, the teenaged kid took a DIY approach to sharing his love of the Stones: he made a mimeographed fanzine on the Stones’ comings and going. Through a starcrossed series of events, German ends up getting his work to the band members themselves. From there on, German proves his dedication to the band in almost quasi-stalkerish fashion and eventually his fanzine becomes the band’s official newsletters to their worldwide fan base. He befriends multiple Stones and even gets to ghostwrite Ron Wood's autobiography before he finally ends his association with the Glimmer Twins in the mid 90s. From a strictly musical standpoint, the period of his insider status (1980-1995) is not when the Stones were at their creative peak, and those interested in the musical part of the Stones’ equation will be left wanting. But that period also marks when the Stones became more of an industry than a rock band. This is where Under Their Thumb becomes an addicting read, as German has to deal with all the hassles of hanging with the biggest rock band in history with very few of the perks. Even though most of the band knows him on a first name basis, he still struggles to keep in touch with the band that employs him to follow their exploits. But at the same time, the events when German does get an intimate audience with the Stones are among the most vivid and real you’ll ever read. Bill’s narrative is sharp and witty, which makes for a breezy, easygoing style – ironic considering how many hoops he has to endure at times. His candid memories of the Stones are hilarious (Mick Jagger's very un-PC method of caller ID before the technology existed, for instance) and quite heartwarming (Keith Richards comes off more of a kindly and goofy uncle than the hellraising druggie he’s often portrayed to be) and his concious decision to stay (mostly) sober in his travels give his stories added validity. Certainly not a standard rock bio by any stretch, Under Their Thumb tells a wildly improbable story with lots more heart and warmth than you’d expect.

  • So Cobain is still dead 15 years later

    Abr 9 2009, 12h06 por ACKthehack

I remember I was coming back from work. It was a shitty job slinging fish at a grocery store and I was tired. So I got on the radio and the guy stops a song right in its tracks to announce Kurt Cobain of the band Nirvana finally offed himself.

Listen sure he had tried drug overdoses and if I was in the office dead pool of how he would eventually end up dead I would have chosen that one. Nope, he just could not make that work for himself so he ate the barrel of a shotgun.

It was not a big surprise. Still I felt for his kid a lot. There was a lot of anger for me. I did not focus on this too much at the time. It came and passed like a wave but damn he left his kid to be raised by Courtney Love of Hole for fuck's sake.

There was a serious sense of loss though. I don't deny it. Cobain had the stuff. Nirvana had toured with Sonic Youth and Dinosaur Jr. They were for real. They came from the underground. They were the real deal.

    And they were fucking good.

So what does the great modern artist have to do? Like he is ripping a page from the dinosaur era of classic rock he has to die young.

I mean haven't we gotten past that? We should all deal with substance abuse move on and become old and fat and useless touring giant arenas till we can barely speak just toddering up to the mike and pulling a blathering Ozzie pulling an Elvis Presley trying to be a Hank Williams maybe?

Shit maybe that is the answer which is worse the 154th tour of Stones where Keith Richards is pushed onstage in a wheel chair and Mick Jagger accidently spitting his dentures out into the crowd? Or maybe dying way young before you even got your best shit out of the door?

Maybe I giving Cobain too much credit too. Perhaps nothing will have ever come close to Nevermind.

    But what do you think?

  • Song Of The Day - 21 Mar 2009: Not Fade Away

    Mar 22 2009, 20h25 por sablespecter

The Rolling Stones / TocarNot Fade Away / [single] (A) / Feb 1964

MUS1030 Music Journal* 2: The Stones’ take on Buddy Holly and the “Bo Diddley Beat”

As was common in the early years for many a rock group, The Rolling Stones’ earliest singles were written by others. This, their third overall and first in the United States, was released in early 1964. Written by Buddy Holly and initially recorded by The Crickets in 1957, The Rolling Stones made this one their own, driving the “Bo Diddley beat” of this song even harder. To give added color to the simple, non-changing chords strummed out by Keith Richards, Mick Jagger adds maracas to his emphatic, syllabic singing, while Brian Jones weaves a wailing harmonica over top and around the monophonic vocal line. Bill Wyman’s bass is apparently the only electric instrument, and lilts up and down within a relatively narrow range underneath the guitar. Charlie Watts is playing only a floor tom, and it is either he or Mick that adds a tambourine for embellishment. Most interestingly, the offbeats are hit by syncopated hambone handclaps, but I’m not sure whose hands were free for that. A lot of instrumentation for a relatively simple song, and I’m not sure how they fit it all in without someone else lending a hand in the studio!

This song itself is a straight four-on-the-floor (4/4 time) 12-bar blues. There is a single-bar strummed intro, followed by the first two verses. A 9-bar instrumental break with a high harmonica solo follows, and the song concludes with one last verse and, ironically, multiple voices harmonizing on the lyrics “not fade away” in a fade out. The lyrics are of the “love blues” variety, the singer imploring the object of his affection to give her love to him, his own love “bigger than a Cadillac” (ahem).

It moves along at a moderately fast-paced tempo, but the “Bo Diddley Beat” has the effect of driving the song forward with an almost salsa feel. “bomp-ba-domp-ba-domp, ba-domp-domp” (think, “shave and a hair cut, two bits”). The whole song from intro through fade out, is less than two minutes, yet it proved to be their first Top 5 hit in Great Britain.

    Lyrics to “Not Fade Away”

I wanna tell you how it’s gonna be
You’re gonna give your love to me
I’m gonna love you night and day
Love is love and not fade away
Well, love is love and not fade away

And my love bigger than a Cadillac
I try to show it and you drive me back
Your love for me has got to be real
For you to know just how I feel
    Love real not fade away
Well, love real not fade away
    Yeah

    [instrumental break]

I wanna tell you how it’s gonna be
You’re gonna give your love to me
Love that lasts more than one day
Well, love is love and not fade away
Well, love is love and not fade away
Well, love is love and not fade away
