  • KFLA Update 9/22/08 - Large Professor, Four Year Strong, The Mighty Underdogs, The…

    Set 22 2008, 20h21 por TheKnitLA

    Sunday, October 12th
Large Professor Main Source Album Release Party, with special guests DJ Muggs & Planet Asia, People Under the Stairs (DJ Set), Vendetta Kingz, with special guest appearances all night
8:30 PM, $15 advance, $18 day of show
As a founding member of NY hip hop group Main Source, Large Professor put out a classic straight outta the gate. Since then, his sound has become an institution; you can hear it on Nas’ “It Ain’t Hard to Tell,” A Tribe Called Quest’s “Keep it Rollin’”, nearly all of Kool G Rap and DJ Polo’s Wanted: Dead or Alive. His productions in the mid-Nineties defined the term ‘boom bap,’ and gives a clear idea of what to expect from his first LP in over three years, Main Source. He’s enlisted emcees such as Jeru the Damaja, Lil’ Dap, Big Noyd, and Styles P. No skits, no songs based around dances, no forced collabos dreamed up by A&R—Just beats, rhymes and life.

    Thursday, October 16th
Four Year Strong, Polar Bear Club, I Am the Avalanche, Crime in Stereo, This Is Hell, Broadway Calls, A Loss For Words
8:00 PM, $12 advance, $14 day of show
"We just play exactly what we want to hear," explains Dan O’Conner, referring to Four Year Strong’s combination of hardcore and pop-punk. Sharing an average age of 20 years old, these five bearded guys have already self-released an EP, making themselves known on the Smartpunk Top 100 sales and Purevolume's "most played" charts. The band built their own stage sets, booked their own tours, and made their own music their way. The debut full-length, Rise or Die Trying, premieres September 18th on I Surrender Records. Already, the album has generated an excited buzz across the web, with over 45,000 plays on each Purevolume and Myspace with nothing more than a taste of what Rise or Die Trying will bring.

    Sunday, Octover 19th
La Tremenda Gira Tour 2008 starring La Tremenda Korte, La Banda Skalavera, Rudo Movimiento, Chanclaso 78, NINE5ONE
7:30 PM, $20 advance, $25 day of show
La Tremenda Korte is named after an influential Cuban radio show that starred the character Tres Patines, a sort-of Mexican Charlie Chaplin. LTK is one of the most enduring bands to emerge from Mexico City's early-‘90s ska movement. Over the years they have matured into very good musicians, and have participated in many important cultural festivals such as the 2001 Afrocaribbean festival in Veracruz. Their latest album, Frecuencia Rebelde, is a fun and creative mix of rock ‘n’ roll, ska, and high flying horns, displaying the spicy sarcasm exemplified by Mexican bands such as Cafe Tacuba and Maldita Vecindad.

    Saturday, October 18th
Michale Graves, Demonia, Bidwells Ghost, The Gentlemens Club
8:00 PM, $10 advance, $12 day of show
At nineteen years old, Michale Graves passed the audition to replace Glenn Danzig in the reformed Misfits. Since that time, has had quite a unique career. Fronting the horror punk legends is enough in itself; Graves cut four albums with the ‘fits before embarking on a solo career as well as forming the project Gotham Road. If that wasn’t enough, he’s collaborated with George Romero on a video for “Butcher Shop,” has been an activist for Damien Echols and the West Memphis Three, and founded conservativepunk.com.

    Thursday, October 30th
The Mighty Underdogs (Gift Of Gab, Lateef The Truth Speaker, & Headnodic), Zion I
8:00 PM, $18 advance, $20 day of show
What’s the point of keeping it real when alternate realities are so much more fun? For new hip hop supergroup the Mighty Underdogs, our world is one of hyper-reality where vacationing monsters have gunfights. The newly formed trio of heavy weights from the West Coast—Blackalicious’s Gift of Gab, fellow Quannum compatriot Lateef the Truth Speaker and Bay Area producer Headnodic—release their debut collaboration, Dropping Science Fiction, on the other coast’s Definitive Jux label. Working with a dizzying set of collaborators including DJ Shadow, Mr. Lif, Akrobatik, the Alkoholiks’ Tash, , Julian and Damian “JR Gong” Marley and Jurassic 5’s Chali 2na, the Mighty Underdogs tour through worlds and soundscapes that blur all settings.

    Thursday, October 30th
    The New Deal, Underground Orchestra
    8:00 PM, $20
The story continues to evolve with Canada’s the New Deal, as they celebrate the seismic collision of live, improvised jamming with the energy and flow of contemporary dance music. Since the band’s formation in 1999, North American response has been exceptional. At the vanguard of a new progressive style, the New Deal has become a live touring phenomenon. They have appeared at Bonnaroo, Jazz Fest New Orleans, the Coachella Festival, Street Scene in San Diego, Berkfest and the Detroit Electronic Music Festival and have headlined over 400 shows in the past 4 years. Their sophomore studio recording, Gone Gone Gone, complements their catalogue of three live releases, exploring the nuances of tempo, melody and thematic repetition for which the band is so well known.

    Sunday, November 9th
Before Their Eyes, LoveHateHero, Eyes Set to Kill, A Kiss For Jersey, Oceana, Ice Nine Kills
    6:30 PM, $12
By the time they get to Hollywood, Before Their Eyes newest release The Dawn of My Death will be just one week old. The band, signed to Rise Records, is a Christian post-hardcore/screamo band from Findlay, Ohio. They recently completed the Scream the Prayer Tour with Here I Come Falling and other like-minded positive message bands.

    Thursday, November 13th
    The Scenic, Brighten, TV/TV
    7:00 PM, $10
"When listening to our record, we want people to feel exactly like the feeling you get when you couldn't be happier anywhere else, doing anything else, at that moment in time," says Scenic guitarist Dan Wolf. "We really feel we made a great record. Overall, it's very feel-good, yet still has an emotional side to it."

With refreshing humor and a streak of good fortune to their credit, the Scenic has created a buzz that has helped build one of summer's most anticipated releases, Find Yourself Here. They've made an honest, straightforward record that pulls no punches in its messages.

  • Scream

    Jan 12 2008, 9h20 por Iter__Ignis

  • Eclecticism vs. Poserism

    Set 27 2007, 0h42 por fjdiaz

So I was reading this Anti-Nu Metal Last.fm page which got me thinking. Apparently to be a part of this group you have to have none of the "banned" bands in your top 50, some of which being System of a Down, Slipknot, Linkin Park, etc etc. I guess I wouldn't meet the requirements since I have SOAD with 172 or so listens from the Hyptnotize/Mesmerize albums (I don't think I've ever listened to any of their other albums). But this got me thinking, I have a LOT of bands elitist metalheads wouldn't approve of like Eiffel 65 (hey nothing wrong with reliving your childhood, SOAD (already mentioned), Jewel, Enya, and then some like Daft Punk, etc. Occasional punk such as Flogging Molly, Michale Graves, etc. too.

And like I said this got me thinking: where do you draw the line at someone who is eclectic and someone who is a poser? Of course we as human beings deceive ourselves all the time. Teenagehood is based on self-deception; thinking you're dark and disturbed because you wear Emily Strange socks and list Tim Burton as your hero, or thinking metal will be a part of your soul forever because you have every album Cory Taylor has been in and wear Road Runner Records jumpers. So how do we really know if we're just open-minded or really are a poser? Do the elitists decide, even though they are incredibly bias? Or do you listen to your conscience, even though kids of the year 2000 cant tell the difference between a mind and a TV screen?

There is no answer to this, and asking questions with no answer seems to be a weakness of mine. So I'll analyse this in terms of me! Pretty pretty little me. Ok, here we go:
    - I listen to Linkin Park tracks every now and then. I think they're cool and let me reminisce about high school.
    - I don't particularly like SOAD, but I think their last two albums are really bleak in a good way and aren't tainted by dumb friends who worship them as gods on a daily basis.
    - I hate the mainstream metal scene. I cringe when I see kids wearing HIM shirts and dangling wallet chains from their pockets. I shrug in utter confusion when I see someone my own age doing the same.
    - I can't stand emo. The imagery, the clothes, the attitude, the vocals, the thick earrings, the openness to homosexual exploration, everything. But I fucking love some of My Chemical Romance's tracks. They're great. I don't know why but they fucking rule, especially on The Black Parade.
    - I listen to Cradle of Filth's Bitter Suites to Succubi every now and then and find I still enjoy it.
    - 1990s Pop has become a prominent section of my music collection. Refer to Eiffel 65.
    - Despite all this if you ask me, I will tell you with all sincerity that my favourite bands are Sonata Arctica, Gamma Ray, Children of Bodom, Ensiferum, Blind Guardian, Iced Earth, Korpiklaani, etc.

On top of all this I don't like Metal fans, tr00 or poseur. Metal musicians are my idols, but the fans (like everything else I guess) ruin it for me most of the time. I consider myself a metalhead by the simple fact that I love metal, and I consider (most) of what I listen to to be genuine, untainted, beautiful and visionary music. I rarely settle for anything less than music that has been creative with love and a vision, and no trace of a lusting for money and fame.

This post isn't very coherent, I see that now, but the main reason I wrote it is to get my thoughts down in a systematic way to come up with an answer that suits me. And that answer, my friends, is that I am not a poser. Maybe eclectic, but let's lay off the labels for now. As for everyone else, all I can say is I don't know you, nor do I have an insight into your thought patterns. All I know is that if I see you walking down the street looking like Tripp Eisen or Bert McCracken, you can look forward to a slow voodoo curse on the morrow.

Oh yeah, and I've never nor do I want to properly listened to Trivium. I only take the advice of people who have real credibility when I want to know what band sucks badly. Sorry Elitist Metalheads, I sympathise and applaud your campaign against all that is false, but you just don't have the credibility I'm looking for. That's a job for GWAR. :)

    Ago 12 2007, 6h32 por KristinaUrine

And I feel like a total fgt.
    Yuck.
I've hated Michale Graves for quite a while now. I liked his shitty music in middle school. I just uploaded American Psycho onto my computer.... I guess it's okay in moderation.
Danzig will always be superior though.
