O Metallica é um grupo de heavy metal fundado em 1981 em Downey, Califórnia. Eles foram, junto com o Slayer e Anthrax os fundadores do thrash metal. Lars Ulrich, que tinha se mudado da Dinamarca para os Estados Unidos para se tornar um jogador de tênis, estava muito empolgado com a NWOBHM e bandas como o Iron Maiden e o Diamond Head, e levou tais conceitos a um país que ainda ouvia KISS. Lá ele conheceu James Hetfield e Dave Mustaine, e chamaram também o baixista Ron McGovney. Em 1982, assistindo a um show do Trauma, eles vêem Cliff Burton, e o chamam para substituir Ron. Cliff aceita e aí se forma o Metallica com sua primeira demo, Hit The Lights lançada para a coletânea Metal Massacre. No começo de 1983, o grupo expulsa Dave Mustaine por problemas com álcool e drogas. Kirk Hammett - então guitarrista do Exodus - foi chamado para substituí-lo.
Primeiros anos
O nome da banda surgiu quando o produtor musical de heavy metal Ron Quintana pediu a Lars para ajudá-lo a escolher um nome para sua nova revista, que destinava-se a promover bandas de metal dos Estados Unidos e Reino Unido. Entre uma lista de Quintana de vários nomes que incluía “Metallica”.
A música da banda era inspirada em outras bandas como Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Motörhead, Diamond Head, Saxon, Thin Lizzy, Iron Maiden, Venom e Mercyful Fate, entre outras, em sua maioria britânicas. Outras influência incluíam bandas de punk rock com Misfits, Zeroption e The Ramones, e o hardcore punk do Discharge.

Without Dave, it wouldn't be any Metallica(maybe it would) But, without Metallica, it wouldn't be any Megadeth, Because Dave was kicked from Metallica, and after that, he made Megadeth because he wanted to be faster, and heavier than them. Thats why he made Megadeth!
