As I mentioned in my previous journal entry, I have a morbid fascination with my own listening statistics. So let's take a look at some more stats from 2009!




And just for fun, let's close out with my top 50 artists of 2009.

Jeszcze wcześniej się w to nie bawiłem, ale kończąc ten rok spojrzałem na wykaz przesłuchanych albumów, okazało się, że troche z nich jest z 2009 roku. Postanowiłem spróbować je ocenić, chociaż nie przyszło mi to z łatwością, bo jak mam ocenić album, która sam w sobie ma 2 naprawdę super piosenki, ale świetny ogólny klimat i świeżość pomysłu versus album z 4-5 super piosenkami, ale reszta to już zapychacze?
Żeby nie przedłużać, oto lista albumów od najgorszego do najlepszego. Baaaardzo subiektywne, niektóre niskie oceny wynikają po prostu z tego, że album jest nieprzyjemny w przesłuchaniu lub wybitnie mi gatunkowo nie leży.

Animal Collective-Merriweather Post Pavilion

Świetna, psychodeliczna okładka, która "rusza się" w oczach + niesamowicie hurraoptymistyczne recenzje + opinie, że płyta jest w swej zajebistości podobna do Fleet Foxes(tak przy okazji, POLECAM!). Co z tego wynikło?55 minutowa psychodeliczno-folkowa ciapa, piosenki praktycznie nierozróżnialne i na jedno kopyto. Ale co najgorsze, po prostu męcząca. Dałem jej jedno przesłuchanie, chociaż u mnie minimum to dwa, ale nie miałem siły na więcej.

Megadeth-Endgame

Metal ze mnie żaden, brakuje mi w nim melodyjności, aczkolwiek cośtam skubnąłem. Zachęcony, tak jak w przypadku Animal Collective pozytywnymi recenzjami, pomyślałem, że spróbuje. Moja przygoda z metalem opierała się głównie na Metallice, a Megadeth ma być tym bardziej "tró" metalowym zespołem, więc czemu nie? Dlatemu:
Sorry brudasy, ale ja też umiem napierdalać na gitarze i blastować przez 45 minut, ale za to nie każdy umie wysmażyć dobrą linie melodyczną, fajny riff itd. Panom z Megadeth się IMO nie udało. Na pewno metalom się spodoba, ale dla wszystkich metalwannabes jak ja lepiej będzie jak przesłuchają po raz kolejny Death Magnetic

30 Seconds to Mars-This Is War

Tutaj, jak dla mnie, OGROMNY minus dla Teraz Rocka. O ile ich recenzje w moim przypadku są bardzo trafne, to tutaj przysłowiowo "zjebali". Pacze sobie "O, 4 gwiazdki, hmmm ich poprzednia płyta była nawet spoko, ooo, piszą, że wydorośleli, super! Zasysam!"
Pierwszy utwór: jakieś intro - jest nieźle
Drugi utwór: Night of the Hunter - naprawdę spoko utwór, dobrze zagrany, świetna melodia. Nakręciłem się.
Trzeci:a więc to tak brzmi biedne U2?
Czwarty: "Nie, no kurwa, coś jest nie tak, 4 gwiazdki?" "sprawdzę na Metacritics bo coś mi nie pasuje....52 procent?!!!!"
Piąty: "Znowu to samo zawodzenie?"

Tak się skończyła przygoda z tą płytą. Dodatkowy punkt za Night of the Hunter.

The Dead Weather-Horehound

Jedna z trzech supergrup w tym zestawieniu. Jacek Biały - gość z ADHD i dwiema naprawde dobrymi formacjami na koncie (The Raconteurs i The White Stripes) wziął sobie kolejną brzydką dziewczyne, tym razem na wokal, kumpla z Raconteursów na basik, chwilowo odpoczywającego od Królewn Ery Kamienia Łupanego Deana Fertitę i tadaaaam! Jest supergrupa. Pierwszy zgrzyt - wokal. Właśnie dlatego nie kcemy pań w zespołach rockowych, drugi - jakieś te piosenki takie nie ten teges. Nie mogę tego określić, bo teoretycznie mają to czego trzeba. Perka - jest ( i to naprawdę niezła - Biały daje rade), bas jest (nie żeby jakoś się wybijał, ale za twarz i okulary tego gościa dodatkowy punkt), gitara jest (Fertita się nie wyszalał w QOTSIE, tu sadzi nawet niezłe, zdeka mroczno-psychodeliczne riffy, ale bez szału), wokal jest (IMO słaby, chyba już wolałbym, żeby Biały robił tzw. "phila collinsa" zamiast niej), ale wszystko razem już nie za bardzo "jest". Pare dobrych riffów, niezły klimat, ale żadnego zapadającego w pamięć utworu. Ciekawostka: Ostatnio ulubiony zespół mojego taty, gościa, który Milesa zagryza Black Sabbath a potem popija Beatlesami i prosi o Kyussa na deser :)
Ciekawostka numer 2 : Płyte dostałem za prenumerate Teraz Rocka i to w dwóch sztukach nie wiedząc czemu
Rozczarowanie numer 1 : White w wywiadzie wspomniał, że chce kontynuować The Dead Weather (nie żeby mi to przeszkadzało), ALE za to porzuca The Raconteurs (zespół z jedną niezła, a drugą ZAJEBISTĄ płytą). Nie możnaby było na odwrót? :(

Chickenfoot-Chickenfoot

Najgorsza nazwa zespołu 2009 roku - prawdopodobnie tak.
Jest to kolejna supergrupa, tutaj miałem zagwostkę, którą z tych "super"grup umieścić jako lepszą. Horehound jest ciekawszy muzycznie i spójniejszy. To prawdziwy album, który mi nie podpasił po prostu. Za to Chickenfoot to parodziesięcio minutowe jam session jednych z najlepszych muzyków świata (przynajmniej technicznie - Satriani) Płyta baaardzo lekka muzycznie, wyczuwalna atmosfera dobrej zabawy, strasznie słabe teksty ( banalne historyjki i śpiewanie o winie, kobietach i rock'n'rolu zostawmy AC/DC i Airbournowi). Zaskakująco słabe riffy (może nie tyle złe, ale Satriani naprawdę nie pokazuje tutaj swoje zwyczajowej zajebistości, są po prostu przeciętne, w życiu bym nie pomyślał , że to prawdopodobnie najlepszy gitarzysta świata) Płyta ma swoje momenty, na pewno nie jest jakoś strasznie rozczarowywująca, gdyby wyszła rok temu to dostałaby 7/10 i miejsce w pierwszej 10, ale ten rok był bardzo obfity i taka płyta bez żadnego pomysłu nie przechodzi, gdy porówna się ją do innych. Już utwór, który polecam mówi o tym w jakim tonie utrzymana jest ta LP.

Riverside-Anno Domini High Definition

Polski zespół prog-rockowy. Co nie pasuje w poprzednim zdaniu? Okazało się jednak, że zwyczajowa "polska chujnia" nie dotknęła tej grupy. Śpiewają po angielsku (dzięki ci panie!), technicznie naprawdę dobrzy i podobno nawet znani na świecie. Ocena płyty nie wynika z jej słabości, raczej z tego, że po prostu jest troche trudna w odbiorze. Nie wchodzi tak łatwo do głowy, nie wybija się czymś szczególnym. Po prostu niezła rzemieślnicza robota.
W sumie trudno mi powiedzieć, który utwór jest najlepszy, bo wszystkie są długie, typowo progrockowe z hardrockowym zacięciem, dlatego utwór do polecenia należy traktować niezbyt dosłownie:

Tutaj zaczynają się albumy, które naprawdę warto przesłuchać. 7/10 to naprawdę dobra płyta, 8/10 b.dobra a 9/10 to "must listen to"

Phoenix-Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix

Francuski zespół? Ufff, śpiewają po angielsku. Dla wszystkich indie-haterów: jak indie kojarzy wam się z radosnym, prostym graniem młodych chłopaków to JEDYNA płyta, do której pasuje ta definicja to właśnie Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix. Co wcale nie jest złe. Parę naprawdę fajnych kawałków, pewna świeżość i młodzieńczość unosząca się na kawałkach, trochę usmiechu na twarzy i po chwili...płyta się kończy. Krótka, zostawiająca niedosyt. Kcemy takich więcej.

Muse-The Resistance

Tutaj, sorry Szczawik, największy zawód roku. Jednak co to za zespół, że wydaje swoją najgorszą płytę, a ona i tak dostaje ode mnie 7/10? Naprawdę dobry. Płyta dostałaby jeszcze jeden punkt, gdyby wywalić 3 ostatnie kawałki - symfonię Bellamiego, który sobie zamarzył i sobie wymarzył ,że takową napisze. Niestety, mnie on nie przekonuje. Dodatkowy minus to nawiązania do Queen. Wiem, wiem "ma być stadionowo, epicko itd.", ale bez przesady w United States of Eurasia/Collateral Damage są już tak chamskie, że tylko brakuje owłosionej klaty Mercurego na okładce. Ale poza tymi "wpadkami" to naprawdę dobra płyta, z kontrowersyjnym głosem Matta i synth-rockowym brzmieniem. Dwie perełki, z których ta druga to prawie czysty R&B w stylu Timbalanda. Dziwne, ale niesamowicie fajne w odsłuchaniu.

Wolfmother-Cosmic Egg

Zespół, który gra połączenie Black Sabbath, AC/DC i Deep Purple nie może być zły, nie? No i nie jest, Australia jest kontynentem typowo hardrockowych, co udowadnia po raz kolejny dając nam Wolfmother. Ich debiutancki album miał takiego powera, że martwy by chwycił za air guitar, niestety drugi album to nie to samo. Ale co się dziwić- 2/3 zespołu odeszło. Został tylko afro koleś i jego zabójcze (przynajmniej na pierwszej płycie) riffy. Druga LP to sprawdzian dla każdej kapeli, tutaj australijczyk miał jeszcze trudniej, ale udało mu się stworzyć, może nie tyle arcydzieło, ale na pewno dobrą, retro-rockową płytę. Aż dziw, że z przestera można jeszcze tyle uzyskać w muzyce. Jedna gwiazdka w górę za Caroline, utwór, który z pozoru banalny i monotonny gdzieś tak w połowie zmienia się za sprawą dramatycznego głosu wokalisty w coś co przyprawia o dreszcze. Jeśli miarą dobrej muzyki jest obecność dreszczy na ciele i ogólnego uczucia przejęcia to Caroline jest utworem roku.

U2-No Line On The Horizon

U2 to dla mnie troche odkrycie roku, zawsze omijane przeze mnie jako zespół, który każdy zna, utwory już tak nie bardzo z pamięci, ale zawsze gdzieś sie przewija. Dorwałem w swoje łapki 18 Singles i okazało się, że to naprawdę fajny zespół z niesamowitym dorobkiem. No to wziąłem się z pełnoprawny album. I? "Stare dziadki" nadal dają rade, i co dziwne, aczkolwiek czasem obecne (patrz: Ten) - pierwsza połowa płyty jest świetna, a druga to już po prostu takie sobie piosenki (dobrze, że chociaż trzymające klimat). Ta pierwsza połowa jednak wystarczy, żeby znaleźć się na liście. + utwór, w którym "grają" chórki i sam śpiew, to trzeba usłyszeć (Unknown Caller)
Niech się młodziaki z 30STM uczą jak brzmi epickość ( w sumie Muse trochę też) w utworze Magnificent

Franz Ferdinand-Tonight: Franz Ferdinand

Zespół, który każdy zna za Take Me Out. Słuchałem kiedyś paru kawałków, ale nigdy nie zagłębiłem się w jakąś płytę. Na TVP Kultura wszyscy podczas recenzji płyty Arktycznych Małpek Humbug zgodnie stwierdzili, że Franzowie nagrali lepszy trzeci album niż Małpy. NIestety, nie zgadzam się z tym stwierdzeniem, ale to i tak świetny album. Dupcia się rusza bezustannie, miękkie połączenie elektroniki i przesteru i dobre melodie. Bardzo podobne strukturalnie do innych utworów z poprzednich płyt, ale podszyte elektroniką. Good stuff, może czwartą płytą przebiją Małpy, bo jak Małpki będą robić się coraz bardziej poważne i mroczne jak robią to teraz z płyty na płyte, to ich następna płyta będzie miałą czarną okładkę i 50 minut jednego przesterowanego dźwięku ;D

Okładka roku ;D Wziął mnie ten zespół z zaskoczenia. Oczywiście recenzje baaardzo pozytywne, ale jakoś nie mogłem się przemóc. No bo minimalizm (wolę bogactwo aranżacji - Pink Floyd i The Beatles), dużo elektroniki - mało rocka, w sumie to nawet zero (a ja kocham rock) i niszowość zespołu (czyli stereotypowo - słabe nagrania). Teraz wszystko co napisałem poza nawiasami uznajcie za zaletę i macie jedną z najlepszych płyt roku. Niekoniecznie rockowo, ale zajebiście! Oparcie wszystkiego na elektronicznych beatach perkusyjnych (nie wiem na czym grane - wygląda jak klawiatura telefonu xD), hipnotyzującym głosie dwóch wokalistów (facet i kobieta, a może raczej chłopak i dziewczyna : przebili Homme'ego w kategorii: najbardziej beznamiętny a przy tym paraliżujący głos) i bardzo ciekawych kompozycyjnych zabiegach. Pierwszy raz słyszę , żeby riff utworu został delikatnie wspomniany w róznych momentach utworów, które go poprzedzały. Tutaj polecam dwa utwory, bo one tworzą "przebojową" warstwę płyty, reszta to napędzane niezwykłym klimatem (bardzo mroczne i surowe brzmienie - White Lies bez orkiestry i z syntezatorami zamiast akordów durowych) kawałki raczej płynnie przechodzące w siebie. Czarna okładka naprawdę ukazuje jaka jest płyta. Ona po prostu wali iksem w czoło i gdy dochodzisz do siebie po utracie przytomności- ona się kończy.

Pearl Jam-Backspacer

Bardzo dziwną mam znajomość tego zespołu. Znam ich pierwszą i ostatnią płytę, które dzieli 18 lat różnicy. Obie świetne, jednak Ten jest ociupinkę lepszy. Mimo wieku i nie tak dobrego już głosu Vedder i chłopaki dali czadu, to chyba najbardziej rockowo-rockowy album w zestawieniu. Super riffy, mniej grungu i zaciągania, ale też mniej solówek (chlip, chlip :(). Nawet jest trochę country, przynajmniej jeśli chodzi o partię wokalną. Po takim albumie na Open'era po prostu TRZEBA jechać :D
No i świetne refreny, potem się nuci kawałki praktycznie bezustannie, a ja melodyjność i dobre zaplecze kompozytorskie bardzo cenie.

Manic Street Preachers-Journal For Plague Lovers

Zaskoczenie roku, zdecydowanie. Ściągnąłem praktycznie przez przypadek, miałem pobrać ich najbardziej znany album Everything Must Go a przez przypadek pobrałem oba. I bardzo dobrze zrobiłem, bo mam widocznie zjebany gust, ale ta nowość podoba mi się bardziej od klasyki. Trudno mi opisać ten album, budowę ma typowo rockową, trzy minutowe utwory, walące w mordę refreny i przester, ale nadal ma w sobie coś takiego, że ciągle chce do niego wracać. Nie wiem co to jest, może to, że pierwszy utwór daje takiego kopa, że wracasz do żywych dopiero na końcówke LP. No i teksty, najbardziej porypane jakie widziałem w tym roku (a myślałem, że Trzy Sępy spokojnie wygrają w tej kategorii ;D)
"Oh, mommy, what's a sex pistol?"
Teksty to zapiski lidera zespołu, który zniknął w 1995 roku i w tym roku został uznany za zmarłego.

Kasabian-West Ryder Pauper Lunatic Asylum

Ktoś gdzieś napisał, że ta płyta byłaby idealnym soundtrackiem do filmu Tarantino. Podpisuję się pod tym wszystkimi palcami u stóp. Bardzo dziwny album zespołu, który każdy zna za Club Foo. Chłopakom zamarzył się nowy Sierżant Pieprzu i pobawili się różnymi instrumentami i orkiestrą mieszając to z solidnie podbitą elektronicznie gitarą. Nietuzinkowe połączenie, które wyszło znakomicie.Poprzedni album mi się nie podobał, był za surowy, na jedno kopyto i bez pomysłu. Tutaj za to pomysłów mnóstwo. Od typowego czadowego openera do przypominające I'm Only Sleeping, kojące Thick as Thieves. Są też dwie ewidentne pomyłki, ale obraz płyty jest niezaburzony. Bardzo przystępna, a jednocześnie głęboka płyta. Do teraz rozwalają mnie niektóre ledwo słyszalne wstawki instrumentalne. Cel: przebić Club Foot. Mission Accomplished.

Arctic Monkeys-Humbug

Josh Homme, rudowłosy bóg stoner rocka zaprosił do siebie (Joshua Tree na pustyni) na sesję czterech gówniarzy. Co z tego wyszło? Mix zabójczy. Homme wsławił się tym, że żaden z jego albumów nie jest przystępny. Absolutne minimum to 3 przesłuchania, a potem to już tylko miłość. Nie inaczej jest teraz, bo mimo, że jest "tylko" producentem to go po prostu mocno czuć na płycie. Porzucili proste piosenki i banalne garażowe riffy, zostawili przyjemnie brytolski głos Turnera i zdolność do tworzenia ciekawych i wpadających w ucho kompozycji (na Humbug jakby mniej przebojowe, bardziej dojrzałe). Dużo więcej brudu, psychodeli, porypanych tekstów i sekcji rytmicznej, która ma bardzo zaawansowane ADHD (chociażby Pretty Visitors). Piosenki są dłuższe, mniej przewidywalne i jedyny pewien hit to Cornerstone, ale to raczej było łatwe do przewidzenia, bo to jeden z niewielu utworów nie nagranych przez Homme'ego i to również czuć. Sama płyta nie ma strasznie zapadających w pamięć utworów, ale sam klimat daje radę i głównie za niego taka wysoka ocena.

White Lies-To Lose My Life

Może to moje zboczenie, ale dla mnie praktycznie każda okładka idealnie pokazuje klimat płyty. Przykład: Popatrzcie na dwie do góry: Manic ma bardzo chore teksty i trochę cierpki głos. Okładka? Pobite dziecko, pasuje? Pasuje. Arctic w tym wydaniu ma taki lekko psychodeliczny klimat rozleniwienia i pewną nutę oldschoolu. Okładka to czterech znudzonych, źle wykadrowanych i przekolorowanych młodych-starych duchem. White Lies działa tak samo. Ciemna okładka idealnie oddaje ducha płyty. Bardzo, ale to bardzo głęboki i przejmujący głos Harry'ego, pulsujący bas, mroczne klawisze i przecinające powietrze akordowe gitary z obfitym chorusem. Jak dla mnie to biją na głowę Joy Division. Płyta idealna dla samobójców z poczuciem humoru. Dlaczego z poczuciem humoru? Bo album ma w sobie parę naprawdę dobrze bujających utworów, więc samobójca sobie fajnie podynda na linie w rytm muzyki. Głos może wkurzać, ale pasuje idealnie do takich kompozycji. Na pewno warta wspomnienia jest tytułowa piosenka, która wzięła mnie z zaskoczenia i z miejsca uruchomiła tryb REPEAT. Zapomniałem wspomnieć, że to kolejny debiut na liście, ale naprawdę dobrze zrobiony technicznie (nawet orkiestra się parę razy pojawia)

..::PŁYTA ROKU 2009::..

Them Crooked Vultures-Them Crooked Vultures

To na początku miało być moje rozczarowanie roku. Trzech PRZEKURWAGENIALNYCH muzyków w jednym pomieszczeniu to i tak masakra na skale światową, a jak jeszcze nagrywają płytę to się w pale nie mieści. Śledziłem doniesienia, bo w końcu to nie jakiś Satriani tylko rudowłosy przyjaciel + pan z wysuniętą szczeną + mister cool bass. Trzy Sępy w spokoju cośtam majstrowały ze sobą a ja łapałem szczątki informacji i utworów, ale też tak, żeby sobie nie zespuć oczekiwania. Pierwszy singiel: New Fang mnie nie powalił. Perka brzmi potężnie, basik ładnie zamiata, gitara niczego sobie, ale bez rewelacji. Ale...z każdym kolejnym odsłuchaniem coraz fajniejsze. Drugi singiel: Mind Eraser, No Chaser. Tu już trochę inaczej, ten to raczej typ walących w mordę. Prosty, nieskomplikowany kompozycyjnie, ale jak Grohl przypierdzieli w podstawę talerzy (kurna nie wiem jak to się nazywa) a potem robi collinsa, czyli śpiewa grając na perce to czacha powoli się pali. Kończy się utwór i ....trąbki, psychodela pełną gębą. Dostałem w swoje łapska płytę (oryginał, niech Grohl ma na waciki) i zawód...Niby mają powera te utwory, ale jakieś takie długie, zawodzące, bez polotu i kurna w ogóle łotdefak. Hmm.. no to jeszcze raz odpaliłem. Wsłuchując się, gdzieś za 3 odsłuchaniem poczułem ich geniusz. Ta płyta to zdecydowany grower, z każdym przesłuchaniem lepsza. Openerowy No One Loves Me & Neither Do I jest bardzo podchwytliwy. Zaczyna się jak typowa QOTSowa kompozycja, żeby walnąć takim riffem w 3:44, że podobno sparaliżowani od urodzenia wykonują headbanging. Do tego dziwne, ale w sumie fajne teksty: "Well, if sex is a weapon, I'll Smash Boom pow! How you like me now?" i mamy pierwszego "hita". Ciut długi, ale prawie każdy ich utwór jest za długi (m.in. dlatego nie ma dychacza).
Jedziem dalej:
o kolejnych dwóch utworach wspominałem (New Fang i Mind Eraser, No Chaser).
Następny to Dead End Friends, lekko świszcząca gitara i bujanie, które utrzymuje się do końca płyty. Nie wiem jak to Grohl z Jonesem wykombinowali, ale tak naprawdę prawie cała płyta ma taki swingująco tańczący groove. Myślę, że Mister Cool naprawdę tutaj się postarał, dupcia się sama rusza, a głowa już dawno boli od machania. Bujać się przy hardrocku, kto by pomyślał?
Ale dalej: Elephants, lekko przytłumiony riff i pełno zmian tempa i klimatu. Adekwatnie do tytułu, to naprawdę MASYWNY utwór. Sępy w jakiś wywiadzie wspomnieli, że te dłuższe utwory (a ten się do nich zalicza) oni traktują jak potężne statki wojenne. Myślę, że porównanie jest bardzo trafne. Ilość riffów, melodii, przejść i stylów śpiewania mnie rozwala za każdym razem, a to wszystko w jednej piosence.
Tutaj przed państwem, mój personal favourite: Scumbag Blues. Doskonały riff z podbiciem "szklankowym" i te FALSETY :D. Cream jak się patrzy, sekcja rytmiczna co chwila odwala za chórek a ciągła wariacja tego samego riffu jest naprawdę bardzo inspirująca. Grohl też daje rade nie siląc się na blastomanie, tylko umiejętnie stopniując napięcie. Jednym z moich ulubionych elementów piosenki jest bas Jonesa. W całym utworze powiela on w jakimś stopniu linię gitar, czasami zaznaczając ją bardziej wirtuozersko, ale to co dzieje się w 1:08 to przechodzi ludzkie pojęcie. Nie wiem na czym on gra, ale brzmi to trochę jakby klawiszowy bas - jeśli coś takiego istnieje. W pewnym momencie dochodzi do tego, że gra jednocześnie i bas zwykły i ten "udziwniony". Dwa basy jednocześnie? Paranoja, przeważnie nawet jednego nie zauważam. Potem leci motyw z Mission Impossible, tylko leciutko zmodyfikowany. Ładnie wpasowuje się w klimat. Następnie psychodeliczna (to słowo często się pojawia, ale naprawdę taka jest płyta) solówka i cały utwór tak upływa. Mistrzostwo świata!
Bandoliers oparte na prostym tłumionym riffie, troche mi się kojarzy z Meksykiem, troche tytuł, trochę sama warstwa melodyjna. Bardzo fajny refren i jeden z ciekawszych utworów na płycie. Gdzieś pod koniec wszystko ucicha i znowu słychać riff na jednym z kanałów. Zawsze to lubie.
Reptiles to z kolei głównie bas podbity fajnym riffem i bardzo pokręconym klimatem (to głównie zasługa gitary i głosu). Mroczny tekst i gitary brzmiące jak śmiech ludzi. Frapujący kawałek...Chyba najdziwniejszy, ale bardzo mi pasuje.
Interlude with the Ludes Pierwszy do odstrzału. Nie, że jest zły, po prostu jest za bardzo crooked w stosunku do innych. 100% byli nawaleni jak go pisali. Płyta spokojnie by się bez niego obeszła, ale na pewno do słuchania.
Warsaw Or The First Breath You Take After You Give Up Kolejny ze statków bojowych. Długi, powolny, z niepokojącymi chórkami i gitarą. Potem zmiana na bardziej wesoły i znowu na powolny i tak ciągle. Porypany utwór, a refren to już w ogóle. Falsecik na chórkach i hipnotyzujący głos rudego. Podoba mi się tekst i ogólna melodia. Ciągłe zmiany sprawiają, że utwór nie nudzi. Zdecydowanie najfajniejszy z trójki "statków".
Caligulove. Głównie zapamiętany przez to, że ma bardzo normalny refren jesli chodzi o tekst. Przeważnie rudemu odwala i pisze o schizach, a tutaj czysty romansik. "I don't nead a reason, put your arms around me". Oczywiście tylko tekst jest normalny, reszta to schiza na pełnym gazie z dziwnymi wyciami pasującymi do uderzeń gitar (może to druga gitara?)
Gunman Najbardziej inny utwór na płycie. Jak na poprzednich bujało się łepetynką, to teraz ona uderza w ściany z mocą atomową. Świetny, fajnie zmodyfikowany przez efekty riff i doskonały rytm parkietowy. Nic dziwnego, że w teaserze do tego utworu tańczyły trupisze. Lepiej bym sobie tego nie wyobraził.
Spinning In Daffodils Jako, że jestem dziwną osobą, to ten zachwalany utwór bym najchętniej...wywalił z płyty. Jest po prostu nudny, a najciekawszą częścią jest wstęp pianina, który szybko jest zastąpiony gitarą (ach jak mnie wkurwia, że ona nie gra do rytmu!) Trzeci ze statków i najsłabszy. Naprawdę co za dużo psychodeli to niezdrowo.

Konkluzja: Nie wiem czy to jest zbawienie rocka, ale wiem ,że to naprawdę zajebista płyta moich ulubionych muzyków. Minusy? Ciut za dużo Homme'ego w tym (chodzi o wokal, chciałbym , żeby Grohl też pośpiewał na kolejnej - pewnej już -płycie), niektóre za długie utwory, i dwa praktycznie niepotrzebne. Nie daję połówek, płyty w tym rankingu lecą od najgorszej do najlepszej, ale jakbym dawał to by było 9,5. To co panowie, przyjedziecie na Open'era nie?? PROSZĘ!!!

Ahhh, alas. Another year gone. Musically, I believe it was one to remember.

My taste unarguably favored metal this year. And as a result, my listening habits reflected this. Discovering Iron Maiden, Megadeth, Anthrax, DevilDriver, Lamb of God and Machinehead, it was all a very hectic year.

However, I finally started to listen to electronica, which seems to be the go nowadays, mostly by pushing from my girlfriend. The Presets, AIR, PNAU, Cut Copy, Crystal Castles, Bag Raiders, amongst others. Initially, skeptical. But each of them has grown on me.

Albums released this year were pretty amazing on the whole. Slayer's World Painted Blood was simply mindblowingly heavy. Possibly seeing them live helped me to appreciate the music itself, but the band, almost in their 50's, succeeded in a simply mindblowingly fantastic show. Perhaps even better than the Muse concert I went to see back in '07.

Megadeth's Endgame was.. Well, there was something missing. It certainly wasn't the best album I've listened to this year. The title track is a letdown, but thankfully, Dave Mustaine's and Chris Broderick's shred-tastic opening track Dialectic Chaos was without a doubt my favourite solo released this year, and one of my favourite of all time. OF ALL TIME.

Kanye West is a total dildo.

Rammstein finally released their long awaited sixth studio album. LIEBE IST FuR ALLE DA was nothing short of typical Rammstein. Furious opening tracks, chunky, uncomplicated riffs with increasingly intricate and experimental song structures and styles. Amazing contrasts between songs such as the melodic ballad Freuhling in Paris and typical, aggressive Rammstein RAMMLIED really highlight their varying styles of metal.

Dethalbum II was easily, however, my favourite album of the year. A Metalocalypse fanboy, this album, essentially a soundtrack, but more importantly a seriously brutal album, was awe-inspiringly heavy all the way from Bloodlines to Volcano. Dethklok seemed to have evolved from the first album, which seemed, as aforementioned, simply a soundtrack to the show, Dethalbum II seemed more serious than it's predecessor.

It seems to have matured, with the vocal's increasingly brutal (Bloodlines), the guitar work increasingly hostile and heavy (Comet Song, Cyborg Slayers), and the furious blast beats (Notably in Laser Cannon Deth Sentence) all combining to make a simply astonishing metal album. The songs from Season 3 of Metalocalypse are already shaping up to provide another amazing album for Dethklok. I wait with baited breath to Dethalbum III, it will be simply mindblowing.

However, oppositely to metal, my indie tastes seemed to have decreased. This can be probably linked to the fact that, for the most part, it was a bad year for indie, alternative, and so forth.

Arctic Monkey's Humbug was just a massive letdown, plain and simple. Crying Lightning was the only saviour with that sheer brilliance coming from Nick O'Malley's bass. The rest of the album was lacklustre at best. Whatever People... seems an eon ago. The Arctic's style has evolved, but personally, I preferred the days of Turner's cheeky northern accent working well with the brilliant lyrics to make simple, yet catchy, brilliant music.

Muse's The Resistance was without a doubt, though, the biggest letdown of the year. I can't even begin to describe how much I loathe this album. I had a feeling in my gut that I knew, deep down, that it would be a massive letdown. I mean, after Origin of Symmetry and Absolution, it was unlikely to be equally brilliant. Matt stating that the album would be similar to 'Map of the Problematique' (the best song from Black Holes, without a question) sparked hope, and though Uprising is beginning to grow on me now, I die a little inside every time I hear United States of Eurasia, Undisclosed Desires, and I Belong to you.

It seems that Muse have gone off from a tangent from their old stuff. Expected, since they are modern prog-rock. However, completely ditching brilliance found in Origin of Symmetry spells disaster. I had hoped for another 8 minute epic in the form of Citizen Erased II, but the only epic I got was some space-rock twaddle that I drift off to if I pay too much attention to it.

And don't even get me started on the lyrics, or the message. Uprising? The Resistance? I mean, United States of Eurasia has an Orwellian echo, but the very vibe of this album is far too dystopian. It's far too.. Serious. It's too political. It's not subtle enough. Soldier's Poem, Exo-Politics and Assassin. Those, I believe, were enough in political message.

'It's time those fat-cats had a heart attack.' I facepalm everytime Bellamy says those words. And sadly, it's a reflection of the whole album.

Franz' new album, however, wasn't a complete letdown. It was quite catchy. Very poppy. No You Girls gets you in the mood for singing along, Ulysses is good (without too many listens, that is) and the whole album, again very seperate from their previous works, is a slight let-down, but comparitively to Humbug and The Resistance, I'd easily take this one.

Buckethead's Slaughterhouse on the Prairie and Needle in a Slunk Stack. I couldn't even believe my ears. 'What the fuck has happened to Buckethead.' is all I could say. Depressing. Worst albums of the year. No competition. I can't even approach these with an open mind, they're simply offensive to my ears.

Finally, Animal Collective[/artist's] Merriweather Post Pavilion. Ex-Psycho got me onto this. This album took some getting into, but this is, without a doubt, the single trippiest album I have ever heard. Everything from the music to the artwork is pseudo-acid trip. It all blends together, listening to it places me into a trance. Freak-folk? Experimental? I don't know what the hell it is, and quite frankly I don't care. All I know is that if there were more albums like this, there wouldn't be drug-related crime, because we'd have this for tripping instead. This album is sheer brilliance. If you haven't yet heard it, you absolutely positively must must must listen to it. You may have a seizure listening to Brothersport or Lion In A Coma, but you can trust me when I say that this is the most fun album of the year.

In summary, then. Metal is now my favourite genre. Indie and Alternative seem increasingly elitist and pretentious. And freak-experimental-folk-trip-shit-what-the-fucking-shit-am-i-fucking-listening-to-hop is better than drugs and sex. Because listening to it will cause you to spasm, and undoubtedly cause eargasms. I gurantee it.

2009 was a good year, certainly heavy in quantity, but what about quality? I'll note now that the order of items below are opinion and will most likely change. Disappointingly, it appears I listened to exactly 49 albums this year - one short of having a top 50. It should also be noted that some of the albums here I do not rate highly, such as albums #48 and #47, and they appear here to give a complete view of last year in music (for me).

For any album, this is outstandingly composed. It's a very varied album, but one with strong black metal roots, which show mainly in the drums and vocals. It's hard to place a name of Cobalt's sound - a popular description on their shoutbox is 'Black metal Tool. Challenging music - and very worth picking up.

9. I Shalt Become - The Pendle Witch Trials
Criminally under-rated. To sum it up - it's very, very good depressive/atmospheric black metal from the UK. The album has no pretensions, just ample amounts of great black metal. Well worth finding, it has all the hallmarks of becoming a real gem.

8. Isis - Wavering Radiant
One of the earliest releases of 2009, and it set the right tone. It's a really great album, gives an excellent atmosphere and the vocals are very well done. My only comment is that the songs become slightly boring as the album wears on. Still, one of their best.

7. Baroness - Blue Record
The follow up to Red Album, this album serves as a showcase for Baroness's talent. The songs ooze with life, and the album carries a vein of vitality throughout that gives it a unique flow. The music is heavy, but not overly so - it forms a perfect back drop for John Baizley's grating vocals. There are some genuine moments of brilliance... Jake Leg!

6. The Axis of Perdition - Urfe
Where to start. It's a huge album - two discs (The Grief of The Unclean and The Great Unwashed). The content is mainly ambient soundscape, with spoken word from Leslie Simpson throughout. Very briefly, the album chronicles a man, lost in what seems to be a hellish, urban nightmare. This man runs, aware of demons at the edge of his reality. He relives memories of a hospital, or at least some sort of twisted experiment. What is the meaning? It is unclear - perhaps the demonic city was a dream, a side effect of the man's medical experiments. Maybe the city is a metaphor for the decay of our urban society. Who is Pylon? What is this 'axis'? Take from it what you will, maybe it's just a good story. This will disturb you. Ambitious certainly, but utterly excellent, hauntingly so. When you're out, we're in.

5. Jesu - Opiate Sun
More of an EP than an album, but as before, much of Justin's best music is hidden away on four-track releases. This effort has received flack for it's melodic, shoegaze like approach. Maybe people can't get over the Heartache EP just yet. Fuck them. This is genius. Can't wait for another full length.

4. Anaal Nathrakh -
Anaal Nathrakh have been a band of change recently - of their music, and their fans' opinions. ITCOTBW is an amalgamation of the sheer brutality of The Codex Necro era with the more structured songs and choruses of more recent albums. This album may fuck with your ears, but rest assured - you'll hum along too.


3. Candlemass - Death Magnetic Doom
Unbelievable effort - the songs are devastatingly simple, but hit you with the force of a tonne weight. Actually, this would get on the list simply for The Bleeding Baroness, but it's full of really iconic doom songs. If you're new to Candlemass or doom - look no further.


2. Mastodon - Crack The Skye
An album that has appeared, and has won many lists and polls this year, and it will come second here. I wasn't a fan of Mastodon before this year, and the sheer craft and ambition of this album swayed me. Great riffs, great vocals, and great songs.



1. Katatonia - Night Is The New Day
Perhaps I'm biased; this year was the year that Katatonia really grew on me, and that they released a new album this year only added to it. It is with an air of predictability for myself that I give Night Is The New Day the top spot, but it is an incredible album. Full of melodies, highs and lows, gloom and renewal. It's a less polished, but much more emotional Katatonia album. To quote a magazine feature on this album - 'Lets hope they never cheer up'.

So, overall a good year. Some great new bands, and some old masters returning in style. I still have a few albums to obtain, such as Moss 'Tomb of The Blind Drugged' etc. Lets see...

Well, while those things gestate (undoubtedly in the pipeline in some Chinese laboratory) we'll look back over the last ten years.

Here are my favourite fifty albums from the decade that some may refer to using the cringe-inducing term, the 'noughties'. This list is not set in stone and will undoubtedly be revised as I listen to albums that I missed first time around. There is also a strong bias towards albums released this year which has led to some dubious ordering. This will obviously be revised as time passes.

Sepultura, 'Dante XXI' (2006)
The first distinctive Andreas Kisser-led Sepultura album. 'Against', 'Nation' and 'Roorback' were all pretty underwhelming and largely forgettable. 'Dante XXI' reversed the trend with a rather good stab at a metal concept album.

The Kills, 'Midnight Boom' (2008)
The most accessible album by The Kills, 'Midnight Boom' is a great collection of pop tunes. Powered by tangible sexual tension, Hotel and VV have a great artistic understanding that transforms simplistic, nursery rhyme style songs into so much more. No drummer, no bassist, just two people who complement each other perfectly.

Rammstein, 'Mutter' (2001)
The blueprint for modern Rammstein. Everything since has been retreading familiar territory laid down on this album.

Down, 'III: Over The Under' (2007)
A contemplative record focusing on the devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina and the first to be recorded by Down since Dimebag's murder, 'Over the Under' features a towering vocal performance from Phil Anselmo. I'm not sure if it surpasses 'NOLA' as it does drag a bit; nonetheless it is an excellent album

Megadeth, 'Endgame' (2009)
Mustaine doing what he does best; riffs and solos...in that order! All his bitching about Metallica, his conversion to Christianity and resulting holier-than-thou attitude make him into an intensely unlikeable figure but he is extremely talented, probably driven by the ridiculous chip on his shoulder. The preceding album, 'United Abominations' was a frightening record, not due to concerns over quality but due to the incorporation of his new 'politics'; a heady mixture of neo-con aggression and religious conviction. On 'Endgame', Mustaine thankfully keeps the sermons to a minimum and delivers my favourite Megadeth record since 'Rust in Peace'. My only complaint is that there is something very clinical about it, making it a slightly soulless experience.

American Head Charge, 'The War of Art' (2001)
Perhaps the apex of nu-metal creativity, 'The War of Art' was better than basically any other record of the day. It even eats Slipknot's debut for breakfast. What is amazing is that it is sixteen tracks long and there is no dip in quality!

The Haunted, 'The Dead Eye' (2006)
A divisive album, many thought it was terrible. I however think it is The Haunted's best. The mood of the album is one of palpable melancholy. A common thread of neurosis runs through each track that provides a welcome unifying theme, which previous albums lacked.

Opeth, 'Deliverance' (2002) and 'Damnation' (2003)
Two great albums from Mikael Åkerfeldt, one of the most talented individuals in metal. Released in quick succession, one is a Porcupine Tree-esque collection of tracks with clean vocals and semi-acoustic instrumentation and the other is classic Opeth, complete with blastbeats, solos and all that jazz. Haven't released a bad album yet.

The Strokes, 'Is This It?' (2001)
The faux irony of the title is enough to really get you goat. Young, good looking rich guys who all met at some expensive school and can both choose to be in a band and afford to live a life of luxury because they've got the money to buy and sell you. You can't argue with the results though. You've got 'Last Nite', 'Soma' and my personal favourite 'Someday'. A better album without the NME's Goebbels-esque hype machine bombarding you with myriad images of Julian Casablancas in 'cool, yet thoughtful guy' poses.

Devin Townsend, 'Terria' (2001)
Starts off really badly. 'Olives', what the hell is that...and then 'Mountain'. Geez. 'Mountain' does get better, as does the rest of the album thankfully. 'Canada', 'The Fluke' and 'Stagnant' are all excellent and really showcase Devin's talent for crafting the highest grade prog-metal.

Killswitch Engage, 'The End of Heartache' (2004)
An album that wore me down over the years. First purchased in 2005, I only really started listening to it last year. This album sounds a lot better when you are not constantly bombarded by the metal press, telling you how great Killswitch Engage are after only one album with their consolidated line-up!

Skindred, 'Roots Rock Riot' (2007)
Oh, Skindred...what a band. Not at all cerebral but an excellent album nonetheless. Songs so catchy that you can't help but love 'Roots Rock Riot'.

Dirty Projectors, 'Bitte Orca' (2009)
Another release from 2009, so you'd better check out this here list (click!). 'Bitte Orca' is chock full of intoxicating harmonies, a rousing experience that will undoubtedly climb the list with repeated listens.

Strapping Young Lad, 'Alien' (2005)
The other great Strapping Young Lad album. A less frenzied record than 'City', the focussed aggression is an audio delight. Devin also writes some great lyrics, 'Love?' and 'Possessions' being high points.

Slipknot, 'Vol. 3: The Subliminal Verses' (2004)
I'm no 'maggot'. If they were on a festival bill, I'd stick around but otherwise I'm not bothered. Their debut and 'Iowa' were both rubbish in my opinion. I remember reading endless tomes about how great they were, which I mistakenly believed was fact and not just the result of Roadrunner throwing a lot of cash into an extensive marketing campaign. I only purchased this album because it was cheap and I was bored, a sterling endorsement if ever there was one! Well I was pleasantly surprised to find that it was a fine record. Normal service was resumed with 'All Hope is Gone' though.

Yeah Yeah Yeahs, 'Fever To Tell' (2003)
Such a vital sounding album, like Karen, Nick and Brian were exploding with ideas that they just needed to get on record ASAP. Covering those universal themes of love, lust and loss, 'Fever to Tell' is a high-energy romp that invigorates and energises...like a good shower gel.

Mastodon, 'Blood Mountain' (2006)
I'm not an uber-fan when it comes to Mastodon. They are one of the few bands where I can say that I was actually there at relatively near the beginning, buying 'Remission' soon after it was released. However, ego-tripping aside, I've never been as entranced with their output as many others mainly because I think some of their songs are a little muddled and suffer from a failure to be concise. They have manifold ideas but they either slam them together so nothing can develop or just flog a dead horse. 'Blood Mountain' suffers from these problems moreso than any other Mastodon album but for a good proportion they put together some pretty solid prog-tinged metal that had the critics swooning.

In Flames, 'Clayman' (2000)
Nearing the end of In Flames golden age, 'Clayman' is yet another classic Gothenburg album. In a way, In Flames were way ahead of their time. Now you have all the metalcore bands plagiarising their sound and getting recognition due to geographical serendipity i.e. not being from Sweden. A devastatingly good array of songs, 'Only for the Weak', 'Pinball Map' and 'Another Day in Quicksand' being personal highlights, 'Clayman' is In Flames at the apex of their powers.

Metallica, 'Death Magnetic' (2008)
Now at this point you may wish to disregard the entire list, I understand. It is just as puzzling to me that I have included 'Death Magnetic' in my albums of the decade. I'm not one of these guys who think it's cool to hate on Metallica, not because I'm a massive fan but because I don't really care about them as people. It is obvious that Lars Ulrich is a Mustaine-grade prick and that James now sounds a little too much like Yosemite Sam. Oh, then there's the whole Napster thing, 'Some Kind of Monster' and the terrible albums that they released throughout the nineties culminating in the midlife-crisis-in-a-record, 'St. Anger'. All that aside, I really like 'Death Magnetic'. Despite being made by three multimillionaires (and Rob Trujillo), is has real blue-collar feel to it, simpleton back-to-basics thrash if you will. The fact that it has some kind of soul to it means it beats the hell out of Megadeth's 'Endgame'.

Mastodon, 'Leviathan' (2004)
Often viewed with reverence, Mastodon's second album contains a plethora of impeccable metal tracks. 'Iron Tusk', 'I Am Ahab' and 'Blood and Thunder' are three-minute wonders, what Mastodon do best. As mentioned previously, Mastodon's sound is still replete with frivolous noodling with tracks like 'Seabeast' feeling unnecessarily convoluted. With the exception of 'Hearts Alive', no song extends past the five minute mark yet, somewhat paradoxically, it can be an arduous exercise as there is a tendency even in these short bursts for songs to outstay their welcome. By no means perfect, but when everything clicks it is brilliant.

Fever Ray, 'Fever Ray' (2009)
Once again, another album detailed in my review of 2009 (click!). A lesson in sonic manipulation that provides an eerie, otherworldly experience, one that is enhanced with every listen.

Lamb of God, 'Sacrament' (2006)
Not really adding much to the formula, but another solid effort from Lamb of God. There are numerous great songs on here and it illustrates how they consolidated and honed their signature sound. From 'Walk With Me In Hell' to 'Beating on Death's Door', this is a beast of an album.

Lamb of God, 'Ashes of the Wake' (2004)
Ah, the album where Lamb of God 'got their shit together'. Another band that I had an early awareness of, being lucky enough to pick up a copy of 'New American Gospel'. I'll make no bones about it, I found Lamb of God slightly underwhelming until this album. The production on their first two albums was pretty poor with the snare rendering 'New American Gospel' nigh-on unlistenable. 'As the Palaces Burn' was just as irritating, hallmarked by a dryness, a sterility that emasculated the sound. Whatever, Lamb of God finally nailed it on this album with track after track of memorable metal that finally had production befitting the huge scale of the tracks.

Dream Theater, 'Train of Thought' (2003)
Too metallic for some, 'Train of Thought' is my Dream Theater album of preference. Mercifully, there are no sappy ballads on this one. There are however three of Dream Theater's finest heavy tracks; 'Honor Thy Father', 'This Dying Soul' and 'In the Name of God'. The frenetic solos from both Petrucci and Rudess are breathtaking and there's even an instrumental so you don't have to suffer through LaBrie's caterwauling for the entire album. Bonus!

The White Stripes, 'Elephant' (2003)
A triumph of songwriting from Jack White, a guy who will surely go down as one of this generation's most important musicians. Much like Kurt Cobain before him, White has the ability to manufacture classic songs from simplicity. Take 'Seven Nation Army' for instance, an iconic hook from only a handful of notes, playable on a single string. Anyone could have come up with 'Seven Nation Army', even I can play it! The thing is, no-one did. It took Jack White to disseminate this mesmerising, almost primal hook into the world. A modern classic.

Arch Enemy, 'Rise Of The Tyrant' (2007)
'Rise of the Tyrant' is the album Arch Enemy had been promising since the consolidation of the line-up. Michael Amott is one of the finest guitarists in metal; however Arch Enemy never managed to raise their heads above the parapet as all of their albums were steeped in mediocrity. The odd song here or there was a prelude to a false dawn; take 'We Will Rise' or the astounding 'Nemesis'. Over the course of an album Arch Enemy was a boring proposition, exacerbated by Angela Gossow's monotonous growl. With 'Rise of the Tyrant', Arch Enemy finally delivered...and how! A berserk record that is both savagely heavy and intelligently crafted. Just as one particular section errs towards over familiarity, a new section begins or there's a solo or Angela just goes bat-shit crazy and thrashes the bejesus out of her vocal chords. Bravo Arch Enemy. More like this please.

System of a Down, 'Toxicity' (2001)
When you have a vocalist as talented as Serj Tankian and a guitarist as creative as Daron Malakian you are going to get an album that blows everything else out of the water. Lumped in with the nu-metal crowd due to temporal proximity, the second album from System of a Down is a glorious record. Still very much in touch with the insanity that made their first album so memorable but taking a more mature approach you get an album that includes classics like 'Chop Suey!' and 'Aerials'. The inanity of some of the lyrics is forgivable as it is usually couched in a degree of irreverence, a trait that further marked System of a Down out from their peers.

Queens of the Stone Age, 'Rated R' (2000)
One of the few bands that managed to benefit from being slightly amorphous, Queens of the Stone Age used to be one of the best. Kicking off with the one-two punch of 'Feel Good Hit Of The Summer' and 'Lost Art Of Keeping A Secret', 'Rated R' is rock 'n' roll as it should be; authentic, anthemic and dynamic.

Yeah Yeah Yeahs, 'It's Blitz!' (2009)
Yet another album from 2009 that has a rightful place on its own special list (click!). I love the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. Saying anything more would only diminish this love.

DevilDriver, 'The Fury of Our Maker's Hand' (2005)
I get quite a bit of flak for enjoying DevilDriver. Apparently they are not 'real metal'. Well whatever, I'm not interested in definitions and pointless supplementary credibility-based labels. I'm not listening to music for metaphysical credibility points. No, credibility is not a concern. If it sounds good, it is good. That is why I enjoy DevilDriver. Their debut was rubbish. Maybe that was an attempt at lowering expectations. If it was, then they succeeded as I went into 'The Fury of Our Maker's Hand' expecting very little. Well, what a turnaround. A fine-ass slice of metal that doesn't let up. The amazing consistency across the album is something to be applauded. Faultless.

Radiohead, 'In Rainbows' (2007)
The best zero pounds, zero pence I ever did spend. My infatuation with various esoteric subgenres of metal destroyed my appreciation for Radiohead for a brief period of time. However back in 2007 when I smugly paid nothing for 'In Rainbows' expecting some kind of electro-clash mindfuck, I was humbled and surprised by the most accessible Radiohead album since 'OK Computer'. Some tracks are skeletal, feeling almost unfinished but others are transcendent in their beauty. 'All I Need'; a fitting title if ever there was one. The incorporation of more conventional fodder with 'Bodysnatchers' and 'Jigsaw Falling Into Place' was another plus point. Inspiring me to revisit the Radiohead back catalogue, 'In Rainbows' is a great album that also had the effect of increasing my interest in other genres of music.

Muse, 'Origin Of Symmetry' (2001)
The first seven tracks of this album are utterly perfect. End of. 'New Born'; classic. 'Bliss'; classic. 'Space Dementia'; classic. 'Hyper Music'; classic. 'Plug In Baby'; classic. 'Citizen Erased'; classic. 'Micro Cuts'; (you've guessed it) classic. It is a shame that after 'Micro Cuts' is goes rapidly downhill. None of the remaining tracks come close to 'the magnificent seven'. I've always found the cover of 'Feeling Good' particularly nauseating. Nevertheless, the imperious nature of those first seven tracks is almost unmatched on any other album.

The Devin Townsend Band, 'Accelerated Evolution' (2003)
Probably my favourite Devin Townsend release, 'Accelerated Evolution' forsakes both the proggy bells-and-whistles of his solo releases and the spazzed-out histrionics of Strapping Young Lad. Instead, we have an album that is more direct than Devin's solo work and more accessible than his work with Strapping Young Lad. It is yet another great album from one of the true genre pioneers.

The Flaming Lips, 'Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots' (2003)
The follow up to 'The Soft Bulletin', 'Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots' is a rather safe album about the fragility of life...and robots. The lyrical content employs heavy use of inspirational platitudes especially on 'Do You Realize??' however the sincerity of Wayne Coyne's delivery prevents this being overly sentimental. There is a genuine charm to the tracks on this album and unlike many on this list, it is characterised by overt optimism which only goes to make the album even more appealing.

In Flames, 'Reroute to Remain' (2002)
For me, the last great In Flames album. Although I do know that for some, even this album was a bridge too far from 'Clayman' what with the keyboards and whatnot. This is the last album where In Flames were consciously aware that they were an actual metal band and not peddlers of some nightmarish mish-mash of overly angst-y styles. Interesting fact, this is last album on which Anders' vocals don't sound like he is going to burst into tears mid-song. More on Anders' voice, I like the production of his vocals; I even like the folk-y tracks 'Dawn of a New Day' and 'Metaphor'. The main draw, however, are the title track, 'System' and 'Cloud Connected'; big riffs, big choruses, no angst.

Gojira, 'From Mars to Sirius' (2005)
Opening with a bit of whale song...nice. Gojira are so damn good. They come from the middle of nowhere in France which, correct me if I'm wrong, is a country that doesn't even have a thriving metal scene in the big cities. Are Scarve French? Or are they Dutch? Am I thinking of Textures? Well whatever, I'll assume France doesn't really have that big a pedigree when it comes to metal so it is bewildering that Gojira emerged and are the purveyors of some of the best metal of the decade. 'From Mars to Sirius' is a diverse album that includes not only whale song, no, no, no, but gentle interludes, triplets all over the place, two-handed tapping, environmentalism and yet more whale song. The thinking man's metal record.

Machine Head, 'The Blackening' (2007)
A relentless album. Riff, solo, riff, solo repeat ad infinitum; 'The Blackening' exceeds all expectations. 'From the Ashes of Empires' was good but did not provide an adequate indication of how monumental 'The Blackening' would be. Demmel and Flynn up the ante with every solo and Machine Head finally move from being punk upstarts to the vanguard of metal. A genuine landmark achievement.

Radiohead, 'Kid A' (2000)
I couldn't stand this album for a long period of time, however with the release of 'In Rainbows', I revisited Radiohead's back catalogue and while I'm still not the biggest fan of 'Everything in its Right Place' and the title track (and 'Treefingers' but then who can say they actually enjoy what is essentially anomalous sound) the rest of the album is almost unmatched with 'How To Disappear Completely' being one of Radiohead's finest tracks. 'Idioteque' is equally notable and has heart despite its clinical, electronic composition. Enjoyable and a lesson that some albums need some time to marinate.

The Flaming Lips, 'Embryonic' (2009)
Oh 2009, you have been so kind! Another album on my year end list (click!). After the disappointing (but not completely terrible) 'At War with the Mystics' we have a fuzzy, psychedelic double album that reinvigorates The Flaming Lips' sound after three albums in the same vein.

The Mars Volta, 'De-Loused in the Comatorium' (2003)
Omar Rodriguez Lopez and Cedric Bixler-Zavala, two of the remnants of At the Drive-In, got together and recorded a real corker. It might be prog, it is most certainly pretentious to the point of contempt for the listener but boy howdy, is it stupendous. A cavalcade of aural delights with angular hooks, noodle-fests and super freakouts, 'De-Loused in the Comatorium' left off from the good work these guys were doing in seminal genre titans At the Drive-In. An album that is made even more important due to the sad fact that The Mars Volta are now the premier purveyors of unfathomable bullshit pseudo jazz rendering them incapable of writing anything even approaching a good song.

List! Yes, this too is on my list of 2009 (click!). Lyrically questionable but musically brilliant. A band at the very height of their power.

Mastodon, 'Crack The Skye' (2009)
Wait, another release from 2009? Well then, I've got the perfect thing for you. A year end list (click!). I've already detailed 'Blood Mountain' and 'Leviathan', implying that Mastodon should just stick to the three-minute blasts and cut back on the prog aspects, well, blow me, on 'Crack the Skye' Mastodon went the complete opposite direction and evolved into a fully-fledged band capable of writing an entire prog album. Shows how much I know!

Animal Collective, 'Merriweather Post Pavilion' (2009)
2009 list (click!) Spoiler alert, my favourite album from that particular year. Superlative followed by superlative. You get the picture. 'In the Flowers', 'Summertime Clothes', 'Bluish'...wow. All that and it's got one of those funky optical illusion covers.

Queens of the Stone Age, 'Songs For The Deaf' (2002)
Homme, Oliveri, Grohl, Lanegan; that's apparently all you need to make one of the best rock records of the decade. Track after track of patented 'robot rock' that was not only a breath of fresh air in the contaminated environs of the nu-metal era but a devastating display of songwriting and musicianship. Homme's heavyweight riffs dominate the album, his vocals being just as accomplished. Oliveri adds a visceral quality with his unhinged screams adding variety to the album. Grohl is a phenomenal presence behind the kit, benefiting from being higher in the mix than his predecessors whereas Lanegan delivers an abundantly eerie performance with his instantly recognisable, menacing vocals driving the aptly sinister 'Hanging Tree'. You want modern rock 'n' roll, well this is it.

At the Drive-In, 'Relationship Of Command' (2000)
A band that imploded at the top of their game, 'Relationship of Command' is a masterpiece of whatever genre it is...post-hardcore (?). It doesn't matter. What is amazing about At the Drive-In is they had the punk ethic and the anarchic live shows yet they weren't that good on record until this album. Influential yes, but of their back catalogue this is the only album that I sit down and listen to and go, 'shit, these guys were awesome'. Not a bad track on the album, an album that raised the bar and continues to be recognised to this day as one of the pinnacles of alternative music.

Deftones, 'White Pony' (2000)
Two guys; one loves all things metal and the other guy can't get enough of Sade. That's right; they're the original odd couple! Well that's Stephen Carpenter and Chino Moreno for you. This difference in taste led to 'White Pony', an experimental album that adds numerous facets to the Deftones sound and elevated them above the nu-metal crowd into a genre of their own. The most notable aspect of this album is Chino's vocal performance, a thing of legend. Two adjacent tracks on the album, from 'Digital Bath' into 'Elite', provide the full spectrum of his vocal talents. Track for track, there are very few albums that are a better collection of songs.

Gojira, 'The Way Of All Flesh' (2008)
How do you follow 'From Mars to Sirius'? Oh, by making the best metal release of the decade! A more compact album than its predecessor, 'The Way of All Flesh' is about death, pure and simple. Not as cheery as whale song and recycling but that does not diminish the quality. Crushingly heavy but with outlandish flourishes, album opener 'Oroborus' begins with a swirling, tapped hook before launching into a pile driver of a verse. The centrepiece of the album, 'The Art of Dying' sounds like the end of the world, complete with a tsunami of a chorus, a cacophonous cataclysm that evokes a mood of total destruction. Completed by the title track, this album is unmatched by any other contemporary metal record.

Radiohead, 'Hail To The Thief' (2003
On 'Hail to the Thief' it seems Radiohead had finally come to terms with the sound pioneered on 'Kid A' and could focus their attention outwards. 'Hail to the Thief' is very much an album influenced by the social and political upheaval of the day. The simmering undercurrent of anguish surrounding the presidency of George W. Bush, the illegal war started on false pretences, the spineless capitulation of Tony Blair, global terrorism, all of these factors influenced 'Hail to the Thief'. It is clear that these were all pieces in a larger puzzle, an underlying feeling of impending doom that civilization was in a state of decline. This is what makes 'Hail to the Thief' a compelling listen, it documents a period of time where one man was able to ride roughshod over the global institutions set up to prevent acts of wilful aggression; where another man sidelined supposedly key tenets of liberal society, ignoring millions of voices for personal vanity; and the actions of a man holed up in a cave were able to create such a palpable state of paranoia that he inadvertently made all this madness occur. That's it. Three men led to the temporary circumnavigation of all the ideals that were apparently hallmarks of Western society. 'Hail to the Thief' is the perfect encapsulation of this madness from the fury of '2 + 2 = 5' to the portentous arpeggios of 'A Wolf At The Door', the self-doubt of 'There There' and the claustrophobia of 'The Gloaming', 'Hail to the Thief' is a momentous album to be cherished.

Narrowing down to fifty was tricky, and then ordering them was an even greater challenge. There will be inevitable changes in the near future, but as of now this is the list.

Если раньше французские коллективы представлялись мне в лучшем случае экзотикой, то теперь я увидел весь потенциал и силу французской метал-сцены. Тут и гарные хэви-металисты Nightmare, сочетающие техничность и красоту дэтстеры Carcariass, и романтичные живописцы Amesoeurs. На самом деле я множество хороших групп в этом году открыл. Пожалуй, это был один из самых ожидаемых релизов года и все вложенные ожидания он оправдал. Хорошо, что Эпика чуть изменила направление в сторону симфопавера, хотя Какко я заменил бы на кого-нибудь из более тяжелых и мрачных стилей.

Сама постановка вопроса внушает уважение. Взять ранних злоеров, залить их в Tank (или любую подобную NWOBHM-группу) и все это отпроговать. Результат неподкачал.

Вообще, чем брутальнее стиль тем хуже я его воспринимаю. Начинаю засыпать (эксперементально было подтверждено что в пяти случаях из пять я не просыпаюсь от BOLT THROWER, зато спокойно от Дио). Но технодет все-таки заставляет себя слушать.
