Meanwhile, Back in Communist Russia...

  • [i miei ascolti] è (molto teoricamente) arrivato l'inverno...

  • Isn't it great when flowers are blooming in your own garden?

    Jul 25 2008, 5h00 por Sh0gu

It feels like a fresh breath of countryside nature wind. That's how I feel after getting to know a bit more Brazilian's rock scene!

Brazil has always been known by the lyrical depth of bossa-nova and MPB composers or by the dancing groove of axé, funk, forró and samba. For some time (mostly the 80's) we were known by our proeminent metal scene, but now only the shade of a glorious past remains (of course there are marvellous bands out there, but they do not get enough recognizement); I've always felt there was a lack of well-known rock bands, and even more on the independent side, both inside and outside the country.
This has been changing over the course of years, but there was still something missing from the cauldron: instrumental rock bands.

Japan is well-known in the world for it's emotional math rock bands, such as
toe, LITE, té and Mirror; UK for more tradicional post-rock bands, such as And So I Watch You From Afar, Mogwai and Meanwhile, Back in Communist Russia.... And so goes on.
Many countries had a instrumental scene, be it small or a huge one, during it's gold age, while Brazil lacked one for some time.

But behold the new times, as that is about to change! Last.FM is partially guilty on that.
Thanks to it, I was introduced to Macaco Bong, a math rock trio from Cuiabá who had recently released their first full album, and it's quite impressive. Fans of LITE will surely recognize something here, as MB shares the same energetic vibe of LITE.
Reading articles about Macaco Bong, I've got to know another instrumental rock band, which seems to be the most well-known from Brazil: Hurtmold. They've released about 4 albums, and it's really interesing to see how they've mastered their sound over the years. At first, they had a garage rock sound with a few post-rock attempts, to change into a jazz-oriented post-rock band into their newest album. Once again, a japanese band comes to mind when I think of them: LOSALIOS.
They may not be really known overseas, but they share the same bass-driven riffs as Hurtmold, and the result is simply amazing!

With this new version of Last.FM, the recommended artist page was improved, and that made two other instrumental bands known to my ears: Perdeu a Língua, another great math rock band who has their first EP available for download in their Myspace, and fellow band Constantina, who have a more eletronic/ambient approach of post-rock.

It's really great to see our instrumental scene flourishing this quickly. Just like the independent scene as a whole.
I can feel the old glory coming back once more!

  • the night with a swallow on each shoulder

    Mai 21 2008, 20h57 por alternative4

after having the A Silver Mt. Zion experience last night, i am shredded to bits inside. maybe a bit hung over too. but it all feels great.

if E. didn't take breaks to share his quick wit with the audience between songs, i suspect i could have turned into that guy on the top right balcony, head-banging fervently. and i admit there were many moments i would have taken out a bottle of red wine from my bag and chugged it. only if i had one of course, but that's besides the point. what i am trying to express here is how much i was moved by the music. i am not ashamed to tell the world that i broke out in tears towards the end of There Is A Light
and yes, i may do the same as the fellow Last.fm user who wrote in his review that he is "so getting a tattoo like Jessica's".

as a side note, seeing ASMZ perform made me think what could possibly have happened if i had seen Meanwhile, Back in Communist Russia live. perhaps then i would have brought that wine bottle with me. and probably a pack of razor blades. but unfortunately, that's out of question. or rather fortunately... maybe.

before i go, i'm so tempted to make the usual "oh they didn't play my fav. song" comment (which happens to be Tho You Are Gone I Still Often Walk With You, just FYI) but instead i'm going to plug my ears and go "blablabla, i can't hear youuu" to my unsatisfied personal needs. cause it's ok. really. *wipes tears*

  • Empfehlungen: POST-ROCK

Alben: Mogwai Young Team, Mr. Beast

Godspeed You! Black Emperor (sehr episch und atmosphärisch)
Alben: F#A#oo, Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas to Heaven

    Tortoise (jazzmäßig, sehr entspannend)
Album: Millions Now Living Will Never Die

65daysofstatic (starke Gitarren mit elektronischen idm-Elementen, überaus empfehlenswert)
Alben: The Fall of Math, The Destruction of Small Ideas

Alben: Under the Pipal Tree, Gone

A Silver Mt. Zion (zunächst Nebenprojekt von GY!BE -> mit Gesang)
Alben: Born Into Trouble as the Sparks Fly Upward, Horses in the Sky

Alben: The End of the Beginning, Far From Refuge

This Will Destroy You (sehr junge, talentiere Band aus Texas)
Alben: Young Mountain EP, This Will Destroy You

    Caspian (grandioser, bodenständiger instrumentaler Post-Rock)
Alben: The Four Trees, You Are the Conductor EP

    Alben: Panopticon, Oceanic

Red Sparowes (sehr empfehlenswert, komplett instrumental)
Album: Every Red Heart Shines Toward the Red Sun

    Russian Circles (unbeschreiblich cool)
    Album: Enter

Jesu (Post-Metal mit cleanem Gesang, wunderbar)
Alben: Conqueror, Silver EP, Lifeline EP

    Pelican (sludge und Post-Rock)
Alben: The Fire in Our Throats Will Beckon the Thaw, Australasia

    Alben: Through Silver In Blood,

    Slint (eigentlich math rock, Post-Rock-Pioniere)
    Album: Spiderland

    Aereogramme (alternative/indie/progressive rock mit Post-Rock-Einflüssen)
Alben: Sleep and Release, Seclusion EP

    Logh (ähnlich wie Aereogramme)
    Alben: North, The Raging Sun

    Oceansize (Progressive Rock mit Post-Rock-Elementen)
Alben: Frames, Music For Nurses EP

    Envy (eine Art Post-Rock-screamo)
    Album: Insomniac Doze

Insidertipps, also eher unbekannte Post-Rock Bands:

Meanwhile, Back in Communist Russia... (spoken words, einfach sehr genial)
Alben: Indian Ink, My Elixir; My Poison

Tulsa Drone (unglaublich talentiert, sehr empfehlenswert)
Album: Songs from a Mean Season

Youthmovies (schwer zu klassifizieren, aber sehr interessant)
Alben: Hurrah! Another Year, Surely This One Will Be Better Than the Last; the Inexorable March of Progress Will Lead Us All to Happiness, Honey Slides EP

To Rococo Rot (deutsche electronic-Band oder eben ambient-Post-Rock)
Alben: The Amateur View, Music Is a Hungry Ghost

The Samuel Jackson Five (wirklich schön, schwer zu vergleichen)
    Album: Easily Misunderstood

    Hannu (avantgarde-Ambient)
    Album: Worms In My Piano

  • elitism stinks... oh really?

    Dez 25 2007, 20h41 por 0k0k0

people's crap taste in music, cheapened and homogenized, would prevail were it not for the existence of this thing. tastes do NOT come from nowhere. they come from other people. it matters not the medium of exposure, humans are inevitably behind each of them.

starting first with the definition of "elitism". it's basically people shoving their preferences down other people's throats, is it not. why in the world would they do that if not to annoy the heck out of people with admittedly "inferior" tastes?

it's because they've heard better. "better" being subjective because there are always "better" works waiting to be discovered, but comes off as being
"objective" because for the time being they're the "best".

even dipshits who play elitists of metal because "it's art/played harda an' fasta" know so... somewhat. or the rasta men who prefer some trippier doobie tune over another because it "takes them higher to jah". or you, given the choice between different sets of voice and tits when singing divas are concerned. the list just goes on.

which simply means EVERYBODY is an elitist, differing only in the level of eloquence and discretion.

some listeners more eager than others take it upon themselves to preach the qualities of what they listen to, at the expense of possibly hurting other egos in the process: those wishing for a quieter world, those who have plain sucky music, or those who have plain suckier music but aren't willing to concede so.

understandably so, if the so-called elitists feel their type of music is underappreciated by the lot of mindless sheep they perceive other people to be.
understandable as well, if those being crunched under elitist heels rise against this type of behavior. irritating, yes, but at least someone gives a differing perspective. differences are sometimes good, ensures diversity amongst many other things. but not if those at either side fail to think as the other does, which is just plain stupid because each has valid point not covered by the other.

as always, nothing's resolved by the end of another journal made by ME. just the fact that one needn't simply shoot anything moving in a war, there might be friendlies among the "enemy". or the enemy might've never even existed to begin with.

in other, more important news my primary hard disk appears to have given in. secondary computer won't accept it, primary computer's more than six hours away, and can't afford same- or greater-size backup disks to be sacrificed in place (for the role of being my 'portable' storage device). so much for sixty gigs worth of music... and another hundred for the memories...

    yay christmas.
