When I was young, I Heard It Through The Grapevine by Marvin Gaye was just one of the spectacular stream of soul classics from Motown. But I didn't think much about him as an individual until I was well into adulthood.

On the seminal What's Going On he discusses the social domestic consequences for America of the vietnam war.

I heard that somebody once showed Marvin Gaye some sado-masochistic pornography in Amsterdam. As he flicked through the magazines he said, "I don't need this sexual hurting; I need Sexual Healing...". Then he went back to his hotel and wrote the song.

The Miracles, one of the seminal groups in defining the Motown Sound, enjoyed startling success in the 1960s. Widely regarded as the main vehicle for Smokey Robinson's vocal, writing, and production talents, the group was often overshadowed by the supremely talented frontman, evidenced by their billing as Smokey Robinson and the Miracles from 1965 to 1972.

However, Warren "Pete" Moore, Ronald White, and Bobby Rogers (along with guitarist Marv Tarplin and Claudette Rogers) contributed mightily to the songwriting and production of not only the Miracles's own tunes but also those of Marvin Gaye, The Temptations, The Marvelettes and other Motown artists. Given this wealth of talent, it is no surprise that upon Robinson's departure in 1972, the trio of Moore, White and Bobby Rogers were able to continue their artistic and commercial success until 1976 with Billy Griffin at the helm of lead vocals.



Things started rather modestly with the single Don't Let It End ('Til You Let It Begin) off of the album Renaissance in 1973. That album stands as a monument to their silky smooth soul first embarked upon under the late Smokey years. Commercial success however was elusive until the following year.

The laidback funk of the single Do It Baby proved highly successful (#4 R&B, #13 Pop) and the album of the same name also peaked at #4 on the R&B albums chart while stalling at a respectable #41 on the pop side.
At the end of the year, looking to make lightning strike twice, the single Don't Cha Love It) was released. It had a similar theme and feel to the "Do It Baby" and achieved similar results (#4) on the R&B singles chart if not the pop charts (#78). The album of the same name was released in early 1975 and would prove to be the group's last top ten R&B album.



The commercial hot streak reached its zenith in the fall of 1975 with the disco classic Love Machine, yet another top ten R&B (#5) hit that also topped the pop charts in the US and managed a top 5 showing in the UK. Despite the success of "Love Machine" and the critical acclaim for the concept album whence it came, City of Angels, the Miracles subsequently suffered from a lack of promotion from Motown and left for Columbia Records. The move designed to boost their exposure and promotion quickly proved disastrous and their commercial viability finally collapsed. Thankfully they left more than a few gems to behold!
