  • Council Flats in the mix

    Dez 7 2009, 8h00 por ohskylab

Our most recent release, the début self-titled album by The Council Flats Of Kingsbury, has been going down a storm. Radio support from the likes of Huw Stephens (BBC Radio 1), Don Letts (BBC 6Music), John Kennedy (XFM), ChillFM, Anothernicemess (Netherlands) and WFMU (New York). Cracking reviews. Well, here's some more suburban goodness from the man like Colin Kavanagh, a fresh mix of the sort of stuff that gets him all excited.

  • My Musical Portrait

    Jun 13 2009, 15h49 por Mirage106z28

I go through musical phases, so everything I like may not always be reflected on my charts. I like; classic soul, neo-soul, oldies, classic rock, psychedelic, 60s, girl groups, beach music, 80s new wave, 80s pop, lounge, exotica, R and B, soft rock, black gospel, and I'll at least give an open-minded listen to everything else.

    1. How did you get into 29?

    2. What was the first song you ever heard by 22?
The Rolling Stones: Omöjligt att säga.

    3. What's your favorite lyric by 33?
Throbbing Gristle: Hmmm... Texten till TocarSubhuman är ju slående. Jag gillar de där malande spåren; två andra favoriter är TocarBlood on the Floor (vars text bara loopas, om och om igen) samt Zyklon B Zombie.

    4. What is your favorite album by 49?
Jukon Speakers: Definitvit deras liveplatta A Sect From The Arctic Zone.

    5. How many albums by 13 do you own?
Lee Hazlewood: Två repiga gamla vinlyer, tror jag. Räknas det han gjorde med Nancy Sinatra? Cowboy in Sweden är i a f det vassaste.

    6. What is your favorite song by 50?

    7. Is there a song by 39 that makes you sad?
Isobel Campbell & Mark Lanegan: Haha, det är säkert hela tanken med låtar som Ballad Of The Broken Seas ochTocarIt's Hard to Kill a Bad Thing - Själv är jag inte så ledsen av mig så för mig är de främst stämningsfulla, typ som långfredagen.

    8. What is your favorite song by 15?

    9. What is your favorite song by 5?
Likväl tänker jag svara Girls From The Streets!

    10. Is there a song by 6 that makes you happy?
The Gun Club: Peppad, driven och inspirerad definitivt, men glad/lycklig?

    11. What is your favorite album by 40?
Jimmy Nordin: Julskivan, vad än den må heta.

    12. What is your favorite song by 10?
    Eleni Mandell: Action is Action.

    13. What is a good memory you have involving 30?
The Tiger Lillies: Sen kväll/morgon hemma hos vän tidigt 2000-tal. En överentusiastisk, "övertänd" gemensam bekant och TocarBanging in the Nails table dance.

    14. What is your favorite song by 38?
    Janet Klein: Ballin' the Jack.

    15. Is there a song by 19 that makes you happy?
The Two Man Gentlemen Band: Absolut. TocarQueens County till att börja med. TocarI've Been Drinking!

    16. How many times have you seen 25 live?
The Pipkins: Aldrig. Född försent. Kommer aldrig få se dem heller. Lika bra så.

    17. What is the first song you ever heard by 23?
Slapp Happy: TocarHalf-way There. Fortfarande en av mina favoriter.

    18. What is your favorite album by 11?
    The Dead Brothers: Wunderkammer.

    19. Who is a favorite member of 1?

    20. Have you ever seen 14 live?
Laleh: Njae, har haft chansen men medvetet avstått. Inget jag ångrar heller.

    21. What is a good memory involving 27?

    22. What is your favorite song by 16?
    Seu Jorge: TocarFive Years.

    23. What is the first song you ever heard by 47?
The Tape-beatles: ?. Spelar det någon roll?

    24. What is your favorite album by 18?
    Trio Lligo: Allt.

    25. What is your favorite song by 21?
Curtis Eller's American Circus: The Execution of Black Diamond.

    26. What is the first song you ever heard by 26?
    Yma Sumac: TocarBo Mambo.

    27. What is your favorite album by 3?
    Regina Spektor: Soviet Kitsch.

    28. What is you favorite song by 2?
    Dory Previn: King Kong.

    29. What was the first song you ever heard by 32?
    Bob Lind: TocarElusive Butterfly

    30. What is you favorite song by 8?
Bruce Springsteen: Men frisk fråga! Något från Nebraskakanske, eller Greetings from...

    31. How many times have you seen 17 live?
    Al Duvall: 0.

    32. Is there a song by 44 that makes you happy?
Son of Sven: One Club I Hate.

    33. What is you favorite album by 12?
    Pole: 1.

    34. What is the worst song by 45?

    35. What was the first song you ever heard by 34?
Jake Thackray: TocarThe Castleford Ladies Magic Circle. Så sjuk.

    36. What is you favorite album by 48?
France Gall: Va? Är inget superfan, slölyssnar bara.

    37. How many times have you seen 42 live?

    38. What is your favorite song by 36?
The Walker Brothers: TocarThe Sun Ain't Gonna Shine Anymore.

    39. What was the first song you ever heard by 28?

    40. What is you favorite album by 7?
The Fall: This Nation's Saving Grace .

    41. Is there a song by 31 that makes you happy?
Frank Sinatra: Cycles. Den är tröstande.

    42. What is your favorite album by 41?
Svampmeat. ingen aning.

    43. What is your favorite song by 24?
Tom Waits: Innocent When You Dream.

    44. What is a good memory you have involving 46?
Martin Denny: Ett flott cocktailparty någon gång i framtiden.

    45. What is your favorite song by 35?
    Moondog: TocarAll is Loneliness.

    46. Is there a song by 9 that makes you happy?
Charles Mingus: Självklart, han har ju gjort TocarBetter Git It in Your Soul.

    47. What is your favorite album by 4?
Brainbombs: Obey, tätt följt av nya Fucking Mess.

    48. Who is a favorite member of 37?

    49. What is the first song you ever heard by 43?
Townes Van Zandt: TocarWaiting Around to Die. Tidernas bästa countryfolk-låt.

    50. How many albums do you own by 20?
    Rufus Wainwright: 0.

Yurks... it has been awhile since I've written here in my journal. It's been a busy spring so far. Easter weekend with the family, and birthday weekend with my friends sliced and diced March in to free time nothingness. Here's what I've been picking up at the record store lately.

    Martin Denny - Hypnotique
    and Afro-Desia

I've known the name Martin Denny since I heard Faith No More cover the song Midnight Cowboy on their Angel Dust album. It wasn't until the early 00's that I'd discover Tipsy and exotica and thus rediscover Denny for the first time. Martin Denny is most famous for the Exotica genre. Aside from what I've gathered in the Ultra-Lounge series these are my first proper Martin Denny albums. These releases from Rev-ola (Division of Cherry Red) feature remasters of the mono and stereo versions of each album.

    Barry White - Boss Soul
Released on the very cool Vampi Soul label this is a compilation featuring Barry's work from Branco Records. A combination of his own performances and his production work with Viola Hills, Felice Taylor, and [track]Johnny Wyatt[/track]. It doesn't have any of his throbbing-baritone-hyper-sexual love-capades, so I haven't needed any sub adjustments... yet.

    Divination - Distill
Solo ambient pieces from Bill Laswell, Pete Namlook, Mick Harris, and others.

Mustafa Õzkent - Geçlik Ile Elele
An amazing and crazy marriage of breaks, funk, and Hungarian funk music. It's on a label called B-Music. The cover which features a chimpanzee in a sweater operating a reel-to-reel says it all.

    Fuck Buttons - Street Horrrsing
I saw these guys open up for Caribou in the middle of March. I guess I shouldn't be surprised to see a noise band opening for the same band that released Up In Flames less than a decade ago, but it's still surprising. They're album doesn't deviate much from my memory of the live set. It's always good to see a noise act.

    Jesu - Conqueror
    and Jesu
I haven't had much time for the S/T album yet. I've only heard the first track so far. Conquerer is a good listen. However, the monotone synth parts are often to high in the mix and tend to distract from any potential depth in the song.

Channel One - Drum Sound – The Revolutionaries
    A great slab of Raggae/dub

    Silver Apples - Silver Apples
Weird 60's psyche band. At first I though it was an Indie electronic band that managed to get a really authentic 60's sound. But, no, they're actually out of the 60's. Amazing stuff.

  • Weirdomusic.com is looking for Reviewers/Writers

    Mar 25 2008, 19h12 por Weirdomusic

    Hi friends,

So, you really like Weirdomusic.com? You think the site looks great, don't you? And that downloads page is really something, huh?

But hmmm, the reviews section isn't updated very often, is it? And where are those long-promised artist bio's?

Well, we think our site could use a bit more quality content, and that's where YOU come in!
Do you want to review the latest Jandek album? Or that cool Martin Denny record from 1959?

Weirdomusic.com is looking for reviewers and writers who would like to contribute some stuff every once in a while. We won't make you rich, but your writings will be seen by lots of people and we'll link to your website, blog or whatever.

So, if you're interested, please drop us a line (either through MySpace or by mailing to marco@weirdomusic.com).

    Hope to hear from you!

    best wishes,
    Marco

  • Foreigners suck!

I've had this profile for so long, and I listen to such an exorbitant amount of music, that I can say the following with great confidence: My top 50 artists represent the greatest musicians of all places and times.

With that out of the way, I'd like to make the observation that over half of these artists are American (or United Statesian, if you prefer). Also, the vast majority of them are white, anglophone, male, presumably heterosexual, and non-Jewish.

    Just a thought.

    Tiny Tim
    Laurie Anderson
