A few words from DMG about "Boom": "Featuring Mario on double bass & all (but two) compositions, Tony Malaby on tenor & soprano saxes, Peter Madsen on piano and Matt Wilson on drums. 'boom' begins with the suspenseful "julian", which reminds me of a dream sequence from foggy film noir flick, setting the stage at dusk, before the drama begins to erupt. Soon, the piece "not five kimono" shows off the feisty spirit of this great quartet and complex composing that Mario always embraces. Mario's powerful acoustic bass is at the center, pushing and pumping as the piano and drums swirl around him tightly and Malaby's great soprano and tenor dance above performing a number of inspired solos. Both Tony and the extraordinary pianist, Peter Madsen, are gifted soloists and are spirited throughout. Mario Pavone was a constant collaborator with the late sax great Thoms Chapin, appearing on all just about all of Thomas' early recordings as well as all of Thomas' 8 trio discs for the Knit label."
