Marco Masini was born on September 18, 1964, in Florence. His mother, Anna Maria, sang and played the piano, and was an elementary school teacher before she left the profession in order to stay home with the family. His father, Giancarlo, worked as a representative of products for a hairdresser.
When Marco was 3, he received pianola as a Christmas present: he put it in his hands and he soon succeeded in playing by ear the song White Christmas. Because of the advice of his uncle, some years later Marco began to have music lessons, studying Bach, Chopin and Mozart, although he also loved Pop, Rock and Italian music. When he was 11, he had the opportunity to play at the patron saint festival of a small city near Florence. He played many styles of music, from liscio to Revival to disco.
During liceo (Italian high school) he founded, together with some friends, a musical group called Errata Corrige, but he also had another passion, football: when he was 15 Marco played in a team called Sanger and took part in trials to play for the Fiorentina youth team as a goalkeeper. However, he had to leave sport because of his love for music.
The incompatibility between the tiring life of the musician (which led him to go out every night and to come home very late) and the life of a student made him leave school when he was in the 4th year of accounting school, causing problems not only with his family, but also with his friends.
For a while Marco worked with his father as a representative. In 1980 his family opened a bar in Florence, where Marco helped with his sister Susanna. But the quarrels between Marco and his father increased, causing great suffering on the part of his mother.
