Een beetje laat verslag misschien, maar ik wil toch graag met iedereen delen wat ik op Sziget heb gezien. We kwamen met ons groepje aan op dag 0 van het festival. Er waren die dag twee optredens op het Main Stage, namelijk Lauren Harris en Iron Maiden. De eerste vond ik niet zo boeiend, maar ik was helemaal van mijn stuk gebracht door de Maiden. Ik zag ze voor het eerst live en het was een geweldige show. De nummers die ze speelden waren vooral van het album Somewhere Back in Time: The Best of 1980-1989. Het meezing- en meespringgehalte was erg hoog en het publiek was super gezellig. Iron Maiden zou ik nog wel vaker willen zien.

Op dag 1 heb ik vrij veel bands op het hoofdpodium gezien. Het begon met MGMT die heel erg leuk speelde, maar pas bij Time to Pretend het publiek wist te boeien. Daarna kwam het hoogtepunt voor mij van het festival: Flogging Molly! Wat was dat een mooi feestje: iedereen danste, zong mee en Flogging Molly bleef maar aan een stuk doorspelen, waardoor je makkelijk in een trance raakte. Geweldig optreden!
Na dit fantastische optreden ben ik naar de Converse-tent gegaan. Daar trad Pete Philly & Perquisite op, die ik in tegenstelling tot Eurosonic niet van rijtje een heb kunnen aanschouwen. Wel was het in de muffe tent met de Nederlanders erg gezellig en konden de enkele aanwezige Hongaren en andere Europeanen ook genieten van het leuke optreden. Duidelijk hoogtepuntje was er met de nieuwe single Mystery Repeats, waaop iedereen los ging.
Hierna heb ik op het hoofdpodium The Kooks gezien. Ik keek hier erg naar uit, maar het viel helaas een beetje tegen. De nieuwe liedjes kwamen niet echt vlekkeloos over en alleen de oudere hits als Sofa Song en Naive konden mij tot dansen aanzetten. Jammer, volgende keer spelen ze hopelijk beter.
Vervolgens zijn we weer teruggegaan naar de Converse-tent. Nu speelde daar Delinquent Habits, maar dat was echt ronduit kut. We zijn daar zo snel mogelijk weggegaan, zodat we de Pary Area nog even konden uitchecken. Toen de rest ging doorfeesten zijn mijn vriend en ik naar de Jazz-tent gegaan, waar het franse Smooth optrad. Wie redelijk suffe Jazz verwachte kwam hier bedrogen uit: Smooth beschikt over een pretpakket aan verschillende genres en speelde heel erg in op het publiek, zodat het voor ons vollop genieten was. Of het nou pop, rock, r&b of iets elektronisch was, Smooth kon het allemaal. Leuke band om in de gaten te houden.

Op dag 2 deden we het een beetje rustig aan. Op het Hongaars talenten podium hebben we Folktronika gezien. Een leuk bandje met zangeres die relaxte rock speelt en waar je lekker bij kon liggen. Verder liggen deden we daarna bij het Wereldpodium, waar er leuke balkan-muziek was met de Fanfare Tirana. Grappig om te zien hoe mensen hier in de hete zon helemaal op los gaan en iedereen een enorme smile op zijn/haar gezicht krijgt van de muziek. De fanfare sloot af met het jiddische Hava Nagilla, waarop werkelijk iedereen, zelfs de mensen die in het gras lagen te chillen, helemaal los gingen. Prachtig!
's Avonds heb ik nog op het hoofdpodium de Kaiser Chiefs gezien, Dat was een leuk optreden, met veel bekende liedjes en een hoog meeklap-gehalte. Mijn hoogtepunt daarbij was The Angry Mob, waarbij iedereen heel erg hard het refrein meezong. Na wat omzwervingen kwam ik later nog terecht bij Jamiroquai. Dat was een strak feestje: iedereen danste en zong hard mee. Het veld stond ook aardig vol, zodat naar voren komen erg moeilijk was. Een vriend van ons stond wel aan voren, dat zagen we op de grote schermen toen de camera op hem werd gericht. De leukste nummers vond ik Deeper Underground, Seven Days in Sunny June en natuurlijk Canned Heat. Jamiroquai was zeker een van mijn hoogtepunten van het festival.

Na vroeg naar bed gegaan te zijn om aan het begin van dag 3 vroeg te kunnen douchen, gingen we door het mindere programma overdag naar het Gellert Badhuis in Boedapest. Na een middag in het zwembad te hebben gelegen kwamen we 's avonds terug op het terrein en zagen we nog een stukje Sex Pistols. Ik hield het niet langer dan tien minuten vol, want ik vond het echt kut. Misschien wel kutter dan Delinquent Habits. Ok, de Sex Pistols zijn iconen van de Punk, baanbrekers enzo, maar ze zijn wel aardig afgeschreven nu. Het werk is gedaan, dus ze kunnen gerust kappen. Alleen snappen ze dat zelf niet zo.
Gelukkig was er iets supergaafs in de Hammerworld-tent waar ik ook tijden naar uitkeek: apocalytica! Ik heb genoten van de mooie muziek en ik ben uit mijn dak gegaan op de eigen nummers en vooral op de Metallica-covers. Vooral Seek and Destroy, Enter Sandman, Life Burns!, Helden en het toegift Seemann vond ik geweldig! Na de finse boys gingen we kijken naar ColorStar in de Converse-tent. Zij speelden fijne experimentele luistermuziek. Dat was na Apocalyptica wel welkom. Helaas begon het die dag erg hard te waaien, waardoor we ons plekje bij de rand van de tent moesten verlaten wegens erg hard klapperende tentdoeken. Na het fijne Colorstar was het voor mij echt tijd voor een dutje.

Op dag 4 kwam er zoveel leuks op het hoofdpodium, dat ik daar de hele dag ben gebleven. Eerst was er geweldige ska van het Hongaarse Pannonia Allstars Ska Orchestra, waardoor de toon van deze dag werd gezet: uit je naad gaan! Na dit optreden konden we even bijkomen en kwam het franse Mademoiselle K. Ondanks het gebrekkige engels van de zangeres gaven ze een rockend optreden weg en wisten ze het publiek aardig op te zwepen. Goeie voorbereiding op mijn andere hoogtepunt van het festival: Roisin Murphy. De intro van het optreden was echt super. Alle bandleden kwamen met een leuke choreografie het podium op en tenslotte kwam met een grote kraag en bril Roisin erbij. Ze had bij ieder nummer weer andere acessoires en kleren, wat erg leuk was om te zien. De omkleedpartijen waren ook leuk om naar te kijken. Haar dance-nummers waren echt superleuk. Ik heb heerlijk gedanst op Sow Into You, Let Me Know en natuurlijk OverPowered. Daarna kwam Serj Tankian. Na eerst skeptisch geweest te zijn of hij wel een goed optreden kon geven zonder de rest van System of a Down, moest ik die mening tijdens het optreden bijstellen. De man swingt de pan uit en gaf een fantastisch optreden weg waarvan je echt een kick kreeg. Die kick was nodig, want toen Serj klaar was moest ik gelijk naar voren sprinten om op rijtje een te staan bij R.E.M.. Dit lukte helaas net niet, er stonden nog 2 of 3 rijen voor me. Na drie kwartier wachten was het eindelijk zo ver: R.E.M. stond een metertje of 6 voor me en ze gaven een geweldige show weg! Klassiekers als Man on the Moon en Losing My Religion kwamen pas in het toegift voorbij, de rest van de show bestond uit recenter werk, zoals Hollow Man. Helaas ondanks de mooie positie toch weinig gezien. De mensen voor me waren lang en het was er super krap. Even deed het zelfs pijn toen Michael Stipe het middenpad oprende, want iedereen wou hem aanraken...
Na R.E.M. was ik zodanig moe dat ik wederom vroeg ben gaan slapen.

Dag 5 heb ik wat langer gemaakt. Deze begon met The Wombats op het hoofpodium die wel leuke liedjes speelden, maar er kon prima onder het optreden "presidenten" worden gespeeld. Let's Dance to Joy Division en Backfire at the Disco waren duidelijk de leukste nummers. Pendulum zou hierna optreden, maar zij waren hun instrumenten kwijtgeraakt bij een auto-ongeluk bij de Slowaakse grens. Gelukkig kwam toen Babyshambles eerder dan geprogrammeerd, Ik had nog nooit iets van Babyshambles' muziek gehoord, alleen de wilde verhalen over Pete Doherty waren mij bekend. Maar wat een geweldige band en optreden was het! Ik heb echt genoten en ze hebben me zeker niet teleurgesteld. Ik ben nu zelfs van mening dat men in de media beter aandacht kan besteden aan de geweldige muziek van Babyshambles dan aan Pete Doherty himself, de band verdient meer postitieve aandacht.
Na het optreden hebben we wat rondgelopen op het terrein en hebben we nog een stukje van Heidi has the Giggles uit Italie gezien, onder het genot van een Lango. Het was best wel leuke pop-rock muziek, maar ze halen het nooit bij WSH natuurlijk. 's Avonds hebben we Moke gezien in de Converse-tent. Het was een heel gaaf en strak optreden en ik kon mijn favoriete nummers van hen ook nog eens meepikken, namelijk Enjoy the Silence en The Long Way. Ik zou in eerste instantie niet naar ze toe gaan, omdat ik ze al had gezien op Eurosonic, Noorderslag en Parkpop, maar ik ben toch blij dat ik ze op Sziget gezien heb. Vooral leuk om te zien dat zij niet alleen alle Nederlanders aantrokken, ik hoorde later nog een tevreden Aussi die naar het optreden was geweest.
Na het uitzoeken van een camping op het internet waren we op tijd voor het slotoptreden van het festival op het hoofdpodium: The Killers. Ik zag ze voor het eerst en ik zat ook de eerste helft van het concert op een mooi hek waar ik een mooie overview had. De tweede helft van het concert kon ik een stuk dichter bij het podium staan en dus wat lekkerder uit m'n dak gaan. The Killers zijn echt G-E-W-E-L-D-I-G. Ze zijn meer dan Somebody Told Me. Het was mooi hoe het hele publiek meeklapte en het hard meezong met de tekst: "I got soul, but I'm not a soldier." Dat deed de pacifist in mij veel deugd. Verder ga ik nu alles van The Killers downloaden, het is een schande dat ik zo weinig nummers ken.
Toen het feestje op het hoofdpodium klaar was ben ik terug naar de Converse-tent gegaan. Daar trad de Noor Jose Gonsalez op. Het was een mooi optreden waar je lekker rustig van werd. Vooral een cover van Massive Attack en natuurlijk de cover van The Knife, Heartbeats, waren erg fijn om naar te luisteren. Een leuke gitarist en zanger is die Jose. Na dit rustige optreden was het tijd om voor de eerste en laatste keer naar de Blikk-tent te gaan. Na het zien van een stukje Hip-Hop Boys kwam rond 1 uur een Hongaarse Rage Against The Machine coverband. De band die dat deed was Guilty Parties. Ik heb het op de voorste rij bij het hek drie nummers volgehouden. De dikke crowdsurfer met Dr. Martens schoenen dit nogal pijn aan mijn hoofd en de zanger stond ook nog eens een tijdje op mn hand. Verder was bij het wegvluchten de pitt verschrikkelijk. Ik kom er nooit meer!
Als allerlaatste zijn we op Sziget naar de Jazz-tent gegaan. Eerdere ervaringen met de plek waren positief en ze hadden daar stoelen, dus hop, erheen. In de tent trad European Mantra op. Het was hele lekkere Jazz waarbij een elektrische gitaar de leiding had. Het was heel erg gaaf om te zien en het lag goed in het oor, voor zover ik me herinner. Na het optreden hebben we snel een bank bemachtigd in de Jazz-tent om naar de Jam te luisteren, maar die ging helaas niet door.

Het Sziget-festival vond ik echt heel erg gaaf. Het was de eerste keer dat ik er heen ging en het is me goed bevallen. Hoewel de namen niet echt spectakulair waren, waren de optredens dat wel. Volgend jaar wil ik er weer heengaan, hopelijk weten dan ook meer topbands het festival te vinden!

Festival nationality: Dutch were even more prevalent then in 2006, with my tent pretty much surrounded by them. Travelling in a train filled with Dutch Sziget-goers didn't really add to the vacation feeling, either..

Best food: The indian cuisine tent at the main stage
Best snack: Chimney Cakes

Best shirt: The "Sziget 2009" shirt I saw someone walking around with, with even a mock line-up with the Red Hot Chili Peppers etc. A honorable mention goes to the "Getszi" shirt (which is pronounced the same way as "getsie", Dutch for gruesome).

Best festival convenience: avoiding the shower queues by washing in the Donau river

Day 0

Lauren Harris - Child Iron Maiden's bass player. Tried to be cool, but especially her screaming "you fuckers" against the audience didn't really come accross. Hard rock with cliché love lyrics. Didn't really impress. **

Iron Maiden - Very fine stage decoration, including a platform behind the band the singer walked up and down along; banners changing with each song; and fireworks. The show was executed perfectly in a pretty 80s fashion, with guitar-playing-with-rotating-arm and so on. Musically pretty fine, with good guitar solos and the occasional famous song. Especially in the characteristic "Scrrream for me Budapest", the singer showd that the high notes are sometimes a bit of a problem. About bass player Harris: "We called the Vatican, but they didn't want this man as pope. But their loss is our gain". ****

Day 1

Anti-Flag - Expected a bit more metal, so actually it surprised me positively. Pretty well listenable. **

MGMT - A lot less britpop then expected, but the songs were good. Strangely enough, the two big hits were played in the middle of the show, making beer time planning a bit difficult. ***1/2

Flogging Molly - Very, very sympathetic band (compare Dropkick Murphy's). Nice songs, really fine atmosphere and the singer did seem to particularly enjoy himself, which always helps. The hits such as Selfish Man, but also Float were strong. ****1/2

Pete Philly & Perquisite - In a hot, clampy and especially echoing wan2 stage, this didn't really come across, so I went to sit outside for a bit.

Ленинград - Probably saw this at Noorderslag? Fun party music, impressive to see a whole field of people partying. ***

Alanis Morissette - Walked past in the middle of the concert, when it sounded a bit whiny. Came back during You Oughta Know and also heared the unavoidable Ironic. Walked away during [track artist=Alanis Morisette]Ironic: what a shitty song. **

The Kooks - In the beginning it was better than I expected: a lot more rocky than on record. But keeping my interest for more than 45-odd minutes is still not one of their achievements. **1/2

Delinquent Habits - Let people on stage to distribute tequila among the audience; still hot in the wan2 tent, still bad acoustics and the raps weren't that special either. **

Smooth - Jass band with piano and electric guitar. Very fine to sit quietly and listen to, very fine solo bits as well. ***

Day 2

Folktronika - Good to lie down with. **

Fanfara Tirana - Standard world music. The happy bits were fun, but there were also attampts at depth with a slowly singing man with a white dress that were less interesting. **1/2

Kaiser Chiefs - For me, every time I hear Ruby makes painfully clear that this band is getting a bit embarassing. Hopefully their apparently up-coming third album is more creative. *1/2

Jamiroquai - Fine easy listening music, and some nice hits. Deeper Underground does really tower above the rest by some distance though. **1/2

Kaliakra - Pretty neat Roma music. The public really went quite mad, which was fun to see. Unfortunately, the band was pretty exhausted at the and so they only managed one very slow song as encore. **1/2

Irie Maffia - Pretty fun hiphop-with-female-singer band. **

Day 3

Sex Pistols - Category "nice to be able to say you've seen them". Obviously the Sex Pistols have an image to live up to, and they tried to do this by letting the audience scream "Allah is great". All the way to the back though, this didn't really come across. Musically, not much to comment on. **

Apocalyptica - To be fair I was very sceptical from the outset, but they didn't convince me. Their own slow songs are, well, boring. Their imitations of guitar solos succeed in getting close to the real thing, but this cannot be said about the melody lines: the whining cello melodies here are really off-putting. *1/2

ColorStar - Nice electro-with-guitars, alternating between fast and slow bits to build up a nice kind of tension. And, for a change, the temperature in the wan2 tent was nice. ***

Day 4

Pannonia All-stars Ska Orchestra - Fun ska band. Luckily not much reggae. Much and spread by the wind. **

Mademoiselle K - Female singer with skin-colored shirt, making you wonder at first whether she was topless. Rock with usually good guitar solos. **

Róisín Murphy - Another testosteron booster: nice show with two dancers and Róisín each song changing the jacked over her semi-transparent, tight white shirt. Musically, it had the same sweetish sound as Jamiroquai, only with a more pleasant voice. **1/2

Serj Tankian - The voice that made System of a Down famous is now used for much quiteter songs (during the whole concert, exactly one grunt was to be heared). The set did contain some strong material, but not all songs were equally interesting. Threateningly black clouds in the air added to the atmosphere. **1/2

R.E.M. - An absolute highlight. Michael Stipe is (as they say) a chilled-out entertainer who runs around, jumps and leans on amplifiers, and all this with clearly visible joy. We stood pretty close to the middle shaft before the stage some 10 metres from the stage, and 2 metres in front of us, Michael Stipe shaked hands with the audience :) Nice decoration as well, with nice lights and three video screens. All hits (except "Everybody hurts") were there, and lots of songs from Automatic for the People, a few from Accelerate and one from Around the Sun.. ****

Day 5

The Wombats - We played cards all the way to the back of the main stage during most of the concert, and I can't say The Wombats were really distracting us. We did went to have a look at the end to catch some hits. **

After that, there was the disappointing, but also rather funny remark that Pendulum had to be cancelled because they got stuck at a police station in Slowakia for unknown reasons.

Babyshambles - They showed up, and they didn't disappoint. No real hits, but a solid set with some good guitar stuff. Good band. ***1/2

Moke - Because of their habit of playing every even slightly big festival in The Netherlands lately I had seen them some times already, but I decided to go again to catch the atmosphere if they played outside of The Netherlands. Of course, the wan2 stage was filled with mainly Dutch, but they didn't disappoint. It is still a very good band and this concert made clear that their slowly dragging song The Long Way is good enough to be a highlight on a festival with any line-up. Great! ****

The Killers - One of my most anticipated Sziget concerts. Their set was largely the same and their decoration a lot less exuberant when compared to last year at Werchter, but it is still a good band with some very strong songs. ****

José González - For me, singer-songwriters-with-guitars are usually pretty much mutually exchangable, and José González was hardly an exception. His renditions of 80s songs such as Teardrop were fun, but this late at night it was nice to sit down to, but didn't really catch attention. **1/2

European Mantra - Finishing a Sziget day at the Jazz stage is usually very nice with its uplifting jazz programming, and this last Sziget day was no exception. The band bordering on rock with very good guitar stuff, buying cans of beer (the beer taps were already closed) and sitting on a couch listening to it was a very good way to finish an in all pretty reasonable festival week. ***1/2

Lun. 4 août – Les Méditerranéennes
Le rock arty, lettré mais vif (duquel j'exclus la triste prestation de la très poseuse Mademoiselle K), a eu beaucoup de mal à se mêler à l'air décidément très tongs-dans-le-sable-et-herbe-dans-le-cône qui dominait cette soirée...

Sonic Youth méritent toujours autant leur nom malgré la cinquantaine qu'ils atteignent ou dépassent tous 4, tant on les voit jouir de martyriser leurs jouets (et leurs structures) rock'n'roll.

SAMEDI 28

Début en douceur avec Coming Soon

Le premier jour comportait moins de têtes d'affiches que le dimanche, mais il a permis de faire plusieurs découvertes très sympathique. Tout d'abord Coming Soon fraîchement débarqués d'Annecy. Ils jouent des composition folk douces et entraînantes, une petite reprise de Léonard Cohen pour le plaisir et un bon moment de passé au soleil.


Pilot, The Mantis, Sherkan, Mademoiselle K : Une montée en puissance

Un après midi au soleil ou s'enchaînent des concerts sur les trois scènes : Pilot , The Mantis et leur garage rock qui ont l'honneur d'ouvrir les festivités, Sherkan et leurs hurlements, Stars et leur décors très glamour avec toutes ces roses.

Puis les têtes d'affiches de la soirée : Mademoiselle K , un peu mou sur cd, mais sur scène, un vrai groupe de scène. Du rock, des guitares tout ce qu'on aime.


Mano Solo, pas si seul que ça


On continue avec pour moi un des très bons moments du week-end à savoir Mano Solo. Toujours cette voie à fleur de peau, ces chansons qui sentent bon la vie et qui inspirent à la vie – mention spéciale à Daniel Jamait (ex Mano Negra) à la guitare, et ce final sur Allo Paris . Du bonheur en barre.


BBB, Le Peuple de l'Herbe, The John Butler Trio ... de la qualité pour une bonne fin de 1e soirée

On finira la soirée en alternant avec le groupe à minette BB Brunes le dub toujours aussi énergique du Peuple de l'Herbe , qui fait vibrer une scène #2. Et enfin pour finir The John Butler Trio qui a enflammé la scène principale.


Un petit bilan à mi chemin

Un bémol – comme chaque année – pour l'ouverture des portes, toujours à la bourre et toujours chaotique, et sur l'ouverture des algeco pour chercher des jetons pour les boissons : 2 pour tout le site, c'est trop peu quand on connaît la capacité des françiliens à étancher leur soif.

Nuit, retour à la maison.


Dimanche 29

Wriggles, Origines Contrôlées, Cowboys Fraingants un début en trombe

Deuxième jour et toujours ce soleil qui tape et plombe le public. Sur certains concerts – animés dans la fosse – on voit quelques personnes finir dans les bras du service d'ordre – impeccable sur le week end.

Ce dimanche commence comme un sprint – pour ma part – avec d'entrée de jeu Les Wriggles les clown en rouge, ont enchanté le public du Furia avec leurs chansons satiriques, humoristiques qui pointent là où ca fait mal et sans jamais être vulgaire.

Une fois terminé on court voir Mouss et Hakim pour leur spectacle composés de reprises d'artistes kabyles : Origines Contrôlées . Puis on retourne sur la grande scène voir les cousins québécois des Cowboys Fringants réciter leurs textes engagés tant politiquement que socialements.


Fancy, Kaolin ... après midi en roue libre

Une pause s'impose pour recharger les verres – consignés et réutilisables – de liquide (à boire avec modération), de croiser des amis et de tailler la bavette.

Un petit passage par Fancy . chanteur étrange dans son costume en cuir rouge et sa voie de Castra, on fait le tour du site rapidement, le stand asso et d'artisanat qui sont peu étoffés à peine une dizaine de stands au total.

Cet après midi, on est plus groupés sur la grand scène avec des escapades sur la scène #2. Au menu Kaolin et leur pop un peu molle. Stereophonics et Panic at the Disco qui déchaînent le public féminin.


La déception AaRON, Le pantin Cali

Et ... et ... et ... La grande déception du WE. Malheureusement, il y a des choses contre lesquelles on ne peut rivaliser, içi ce fut la voix du chanteur d'Aaron qui lui a fait défaut et qui a donc empêcher le groupe d'assurer leur prestation avec l'orchestre symphonie de Cergy-Pontoise.

Impossible pour le Furia de se retourner, c'est donc le concert de Cali qui est avancé. Malgré un public peu nombreux pour cause de finale européenne de foot, il assurera un show énergique, virevoltant ... lassant car toujours les mêmes mimiques et appel du public. Seul la reprise de U2 en fin de concert m'aura fait frétiller l'oreille.


Keny Arkana : une note d'espoir pour finir

Un dernier petit détour par mon récent coup de coeur Keny Arkana et son hip hop pour finir sur une note d'espoir : La Rage du Peuple et pour moi l'édition 2008 sera terminée.


Peut-être pas l'édition avec un grand E, mais un bon cru. Des découvertes, du soleil, des bons moments, des bons concerts, une bonne ambiance. De quoi se donner rendez-vous l'année prochaine pour l'édition 2009.

Mon 28 Apr – Mademoiselle K

La Cigale pleine à craquer, le rideau rouge baissé, la fumée, mon enregistreur en route, je suis prêt à encaisser la charge de Mademoiselle K.

C'est la deuxième fois que je vois le groupe, la première fois dans une petite salle de banlieue parisienne, où la première partie (MacZde Carpate) avait un peu malmené la bande de Katerin, pas forcément largement meilleure.

Pour la Cigale, on sent nettement que le groupe a progressé en live. C'est plus péchu, plus maitrisé. Les morceaux connus sont parfois un peu remaniés, allongés, sans toutefois atteindre des sommets de transformation à la The Smashing Pumpkins.

Les morceaux du nouvel album (Jamais la paix) me semblent plus rocks, plus lourds. J'attends de pied ferme la version studio car la version live m'a un peu frustré, ne connaissant pas les morceaux

Quoi qu'il en soit un bon concert, un coup de pied au cul, de la patate, du jus, du gros son.
