"A pretty impressive debut from Purse Candy (real name Matthew Ellis), One Day I'll Look Back pairs six original electro-pop originals and five remixes into a forty-seven minute EP that bodes well for the young Portland, Oregon-based producer's future....

The typical Purse Candy track weds surging electro-house grooves, pulsating synthesizer patterns, and heartfelt, sometimes treated vocal melodies into the kind of blissed-out raver one might expect to hear coming out of the Moodgadget or Ghostly camps; Purse Candy's romantic subject matter and electro emphasis suggest that One Day I'll Look Back also would appeal to fans of M83's Saturdays = Youth.

Breathing heavy electro-house fire, “Your Heart Is Sold” opens the release powerfully with a wailing vocal melody, which is only half-audible when presented amidst the synthesizer blaze, and chopped vocal treatments. Though it's again sliced liberally, Ellis's natural voice is heard more clearly amidst the poppy splendor and surge of “One Day I'll Be Back.” On the funkier tip, “We Don't Have The Heart” allows shadings of electric guitar and electric piano to move to the forefront while a whistling melody heightens the song's melancholy ambiance...."

John Lennon was the greatest Beatle. There is no doubt in my mind to this fact. He wrote the greatest songs, had the best voice, and was the leader of the most wonderful movements. I can understand arguments for McCartney and will entertain thoughts on Harrison. Ringo was Ringo.

Most of Lennon's songs make me happy. In particular though, Give Peace a Chance for its obvious message and Oh Yoko! for its cute utter genius hilarity.

Discovering the genre of shoegaze thanks to Loveless and realizing that I'd never find a better album in the genre.

Wed 21 Oct – ATP Presents: Isis + Mothlite
Logic dictates that this review should begin with a mention of Mothlite, the night's support act. I'd happily oblige if I could remember a solitary thing about them. Their music, to the best of my recollection, was like M83 taking a tepid bath. Not for me, and definitely not for the rest of the restive crowd, either. That said, the catcalls and 'you suck's were not called for. Save it for Puddle of Mudd.

As for the men themselves; messrs Turner, Caxide, Gallagher, Meyer and Harris - well. What a show. Isis have quite rightly developed a reputation for putting on otherworldly live shows, and this performance can only galvanize that. Although not perfect, the bands' intentions seemed clear with every downstroke, and every lung-rupturing caterwaul from Turner. In fact, when I saw Isis all those years ago in 2004, although the setting was apt, the music didn't reach the majesty of Wednesday's performance. Turner's vocals, since then, have become far more intense and conversely more controlled. I suppose the much-discussed 'evolution' and 'progression' of their sound is more pervasive than you'd realize. So much so that one of my favourite tracks, "Carry", felt rather tame, and even skeletal, during the encore. The same cannot be said for Panopticon's Backlit, which filled not only the grandiose theatre but everyone in its' bellies too. It shuddered through us all.

But the night had a purpose; the tour is in support of Wavering Radiant, and support it they did. We were privy to almost every track from the new album, every one played with that particular seriousness Isis bring to the table, and some impeccable live production. The closer to "Threshold of Transformation" stands on the album as one of the finer moments, but for me, it was the pinnacle of the night. It soared and uplifted, somehow destroying the boundary between aggression and, well, hope. Most of the tracks fit this description well, but "Stone to Wake a Serpent" fell short of the mark, toothless and unconvincing. It was almost as though they didn't enjoy playing it. The same can't be said of "Dulcinea", the only song from In the Absence of Truth to get an airing. When it crested, it's a fair bet that there was a fair deal of inappropriate seepage throughout the hall. Speaking of inappropriate emissions, I applaud the audacity of whoever it was that managed to spark up at the start of every track.

I could wax lyrical about the gig for hours, but the case in point is that if you like Isis, you love Isis. You don't need me to describe how they don't so much play songs as define the atmosphere of your mindstate. How they do this, that, and the other. What's great about them is that intangible quality that separates them from almost everything else available; I'm not sure exactly what it is, but it's what we all experienced on Wednesday night. It was an honour.

As a sidenote, Aaron Turner recently got hitched; imagine him at the altar with that beard and hair. And enjoy.
