  • Behind the Groove III: Sister Sledge devient un peu "Chic"

    Out 23 2009, 17h50 por GroovyPeople

Debbie, Kathy, Joni, and Kim Sledge (a.k.a. Sister Sledge) began their recording career in 1971 but it would not be until 1979 that enjoyed massive commercial success with the album We Are Family. In the intervening years, they managed less than stellar chart performances although songs like Mama Never Told Me (reminiscent of The Jackson 5's early work) and the club classic Love Don't You Go Through No Changes on Me demonstrated their potential.

That potential would be fully realized thanks to the production of Bernard Edwards and Nile Rodgers of Chic. Fresh off the success of their debut album (Chic), the two masterminds of the Chic sound bestowed a trove of gems upon Sister Sledge for their inaugural collaboration. Coming along for the ride were the Chic Strings, drummer Tony Thompson and backup vocalists including Luther Vandross, Norma Jean Wright, and Alfa Anderson.

We Are Family features four absolute classic disco songs in TocarWe Are Family, TocarHe's The Greatest Dancer, TocarThinking Of You, and TocarLost In Music. The title track (#1 R&B, #2 Pop) needs no introduction for the casual music listener, but it is nevertheless a breathtaking performance on the part of Bernard Edwards on bass and Kathy Sledge on lead vocals. The full-length album version is the track to seek out to get a full glimpse and taste of the mesmerizing interlock between the two musical elements.

Even better than the title track is the first hit single off the album, 'He's the Greatest Dancer" (#1 R&B, #9 Pop). Spotlighting Nile Rodgers's rhythm guitar prowess, the song's lyrics are arguably the best to come out of a Chic production. "Thinking of You" with it's prominent congas, airy feel and sweet harmonies is the single that never was on this album. Finally, "Lost in Music" (#35 R&B) delivered a little edge to an otherwise lovely album. With no time for a 9 to 5 or other responsibilities, the Sisters proudly proclaim their allegiance (addiction?) to the power of music.

The rest of the album is filled with memorable tracks including the quiet storm gem Somebody Loves Me, the catchy Easier to Love fueled by an insidious flute, and the light-dance track One More Time, which leaves You're a Friend to Me as the album's only weak track.

Since We Are Family went multi-platinum and spent 7 weeks at the top of the R&B albums chart and rose to #3 on the pop side, a return engagement between Sister Sledge and Chic was commenced. Although not as a jam-packed with classic tracks as their first collaboration, the gold album Love Somebody Today (#7 R&B, #31 Pop) was still a mostly enjoyable effort.

Got To Love Somebody (#6 R&B, #64 Pop) kicks the album off with an uptempo vibe. Although a little bit lengthy, the track is sustained throughout its near 7 minute run by flourishes of saxophone and a galloping beat. You Fooled Around is a sultry number notable for its use of harp plucks and sleigh bells. I'm A Good Girl is a primarily piano-driven ballad with occasional outbursts of Rodger's always wonderful guitar.

The album's best track (lyrically and musically) is Pretty Baby. Featuring unified vocals from the Sisters detailing the love of a sacrificing mother for her once-young daughter who is now a strong, beautiful lady. Easy Street and Reach Your Peak (#21 R&B) aren't anything you haven't heard before, but they maintain a delightful groove that makes them well worth a listen. The album finishes in a rather lackluster fashion with the drab ballad How To Love and the too-long and uninteresting Let's Go on Vacation.

Perhaps sensing the full onslaught of the anti-disco movement, Sister Sledge dumped Edwards and Rodgers as producers for their next album All American Girls. However, the move did not stop an ever increasing commercial slide. But for two wonderful albums, the union of Sister Sledge and Chic created some outstanding music. You don't have to be cruisin' with your favorite gang on the outskirts of 'Frisco to know that.

  • Behind the Groove II: Teddy Pendergrass... Workin' it Back (1981 - 1991)

    Out 7 2009, 1h05 por GroovyPeople

One of the biggest soul stars of the 1970s, Teddy Pendergrass was renowned for his husky, booming and always confident singing voice. As a member of Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes and as a solo artist, his powerful vocals coupled with Philly International's remarkable production teams reeled off 3 platinum and 3 gold albums between 1972 and 1979.

As the 1980s dawned, Teddy P was still white hot, proven by the unforgettable single TocarLove T.K.O. which powered the album TP to platinum status. In 1981, Pendergrass released what would be his last album of original material for four years, It's Time For Love. Filled with a familiar blend of mostly slow-tempo love songs with a few dance numbers, the album was not quite to his late 1970s standards but was a stellar addition to his catalogue. Featuring two top 10 R&B singles in I Can't Win Without Your Love (#10) and TocarYou're My Latest, My Greatest Inspiration (#4) and strong album cuts such as TocarNine Times Out of Ten and I Can't Leave Your Love Alone, the album was yet another gold success.

Then came the horrific auto accident in March of 1982 that left Pendergrass barely alive, paralyzed and without the powerful voice his fans had come to know. While Pendergrass underwent grueling physical therapy to regain control of his upper body, Philly International released two albums of previously recorded material, This One's For You and Heaven Only Knows. Although both albums made it into the Top Ten of the R&B albums chart, neither would achieve gold status, a first for Teddy as a solo artist. Most of the songs were unremarkable with some glimmers of Teddy's old magic (Judge For Yourselfand TocarI Want My Baby Back, both from "Heaven...").

Finally, in June of 1984, TP released his long-awaited comeback attempt, Love Language on Elektra. His voice was noticeably less powerful and it appeared that Pendergrass was not yet completely confident in it. Despite the album going gold, the material present didn't warrant such status. TocarHold Me (a duet with Whitney Houston) reached #5 on the R&B chart, but the only song to give listeners hope for a full Teddy Bear comeback was the Luther Vandrossproduced, mid-tempo You're My Choice Tonight (Choose Me). 1985's Workin' It Back did little to create further hope that TP was back in mint condition. The single TocarLove 4/2 hit #6 on the R&B chart, but the album failed to reach gold status and was standard fare mid-80s R&B.

Perhaps sensing the rut his music seemed to have gotten into, Pendergrass hooked up with the Calloway Brothers (formerly of Midnight Star) to produce some of the songs on his next album, 1988's Joy. The album was a resounding success, both commercially and artistically as it powered its way to #2 on the albums chart and went gold. TP finally seemed to have finally mastered his new voice and his production team tailored the music perfectly. The title track (TocarJoy) became his second #1 R&B hit (the other being Close the Door) and was the embodiment of the singer's new-found comfortableness with his life and music. 2 A.M. kept the momentum going topping off at #3 on the charts. Other standout tracks included the sexy Good to You, the feel-good, effervescent Love Is the Power, and the excellent dance track I'm Ready.

Having finally comeback in full force, Pendergrass proved he wasn't quite satisfied and released 1991's Truly Blessed. Yet another Top 5 album and #1 single (the lovelorn It Should've Been You) resulted but the album would sadly prove to be the end of Pendergrass's prominence in contemporary R&B. He continues to tour and has released a couple of studio and live albums since, but his glorious spirit in the face of trying odds and tribulations remains an inspiration.

  • Feeling .... Blues?

    Ago 21 2009, 0h29 por fattomm

In NYC, the (vastly under-rated, and now I'm screwed for next year) "Blues & BBQ" is on sunday. I'm turning out on Sunday with my secret stash of bourbon and water (which gets through the gates nicely if put in a Nestea bottle) for none less than .... Eddy "The Chief" Clearwater.

I sent a shout-out to a bunch of friends to all hook up at 4:30 -- to mix some beer and BBQ (I'm looking forward to Daisy Mae's) before we settle down on the blanket.

Listening, most recently, to some Luther Vandross, which .... just ain't doing it for me. Maybe tonight, for mood, I'm going to drop in some Buddy Guy (because I was talking to my friend in Chicago last night) and get ready for some serious guitar torturing BLUES ....

  • Questionaire 2.0 - top 100

    Abr 30 2009, 5h27 por JJMCSPooh

I actually took the top 50 questionaire and just repeated the questions over again. I also went to random.org to mix up the order differently from last time. I did all this cuz I was bored lol.

  • Luther Vandross dead

    Yahoo.news:

    R&B Singer Luther Vandross Dies

"The Insider" has confirmed that R&B legend LUTHER VANDROSS passed away Friday at the age of 54. Sources tell "The Insider" that Vandross' death was unexpected, and that a memorial service is planned in New York sometime next week. The singer sold over 25 million records during a long and successful career that began in the 1970s. In 1981, he released his debut album, Never Too Much, and went on to become one of the most popular musicians of the 1980s, cranking out lasting hits like "Here and Now" and "The Best Things in Life Are Free." Vandross hit the top of the charts again in the '90s with a duet with MARIAH CAREY of "Endless Love". His soulful pop crooning went on to inspire artists like USHER and ALICIA KEYS, as well as "American Idol" and record labelmate RUBEN STUDDARD. Sources also report that a tribute album for Vandross is in the works. In April 2003, Vandross suffered a stroke due in part to his struggle with diabetes; he then spent close to a month in a coma, and battled meningitis and pneumonia after the attack.
