Well I believe not updating my last.fm journal for nearly 2 years is shocking, but I have been uber busy and well Facebook happened, so did Twitter and Spotify almost stole the limelight, aside from all that; my passion for music and live music seemed to reward me with a huge amount of serendipity. Anyways I can't sleep and around this time of year I come up with contenders for my end of year Mix CD, so here are a few songs (well more than a few) I fell in love with this year.

The father Teds get a special mention, being based in my hometown the band got in touch with me out of the blue and asked me if I wouldn't mind letting them use one of my photos for a single cover. The serendipity of this year in relation to music didn't start here; but it turns out that I had already met the lead singer, Rich McMahon, in a pub through a local contact I met on a flickrmeet. Things progressed and I boarded a float with them on one of the biggest St Patricks Day Parade outside of New York, in the Irish Quarter of Birmingham in the UK. It was a great day! Though I had seemingly got "There's A Whiskey In The Jar" on my mind for the next week, being as it is that infectious. Being a huge fan of The Corrs of course their version of Toss The Feathers on this CD is amazing as is seeing my work printed on a CD!

Imogen Heap, now there's a Whole Heap of serendipity to this one too. First Train Home, agonized over for months, became a hit as soon as we heard it on the vBlogs. It became the first track on the the album which is due out within the next week-ish. I loved Imogen from the first time I heard Frou Frou. The serendipity came in the form of friends and it's fair to say on reflection any chaos in this year was eradicated by the creative process of Ellipse, which seems to be more than an album to me; kinda embodies the year and I have a feeling I'm gonna fall head over heals for Tidal.

In full circle with serendipity, we come back to where I live, quite literally. I seemed to be bumping into this bunch of friendly locals going under the name Rogue States, a British band with a very bright future. Arms Control was a track I'd heard on their facebook page back in September of last year, after being invited down to a gig with local Dan Whitehouse I was blown away by the track live. Having seen them a fair few times live, I'd say watch this space, it's gonna be good! Dan Whitehouse continues this almost "you couldn't make this up" aspect to the year and his track It's Good To Get Away is amazing on the EP.

Rod Thomas also gets a special mention here just because he's so sweet and he drew me back to The Marrs Bar for one hell of a great night in Worcester. It seems I only ever see the Welsh there, given the last time I was there was with the very lovely Julia Harris. Such an Intimate gig, I was sold a wristband by a local guy I adore Sam Isacc similar to Nizlopi and while we are on the local music scene out that way, Kristy Gallacher just keeps getting more awesome by the second! Ooooh and Joss Stone, intimate gig at the Rainbow in Birmingham, AMAZING!



So all in an ace year for music that got really serendipitous

so, our mate Quinny is only young - born in 1987, he missed out on the majority of the whole britpop thing that defined most of our childhoods. lucky him, you might say, and you're probably right... but there's a large part of me that feels the need to educate our young friend about those heady, carefree days of yore...

to this extent, i've made the boy a mix... that became two mixes... that's now expanded to a hundred song playlist, dredging up a number of long forgottens that even i hardly gave time for 14 years ago...

inspiration came from a number of Shine compilations, as well as free CDs from the likes of Select, Vox, NME and Melody Maker still knocking around my bedroom. and of course, my own dodgy library of near hit singles and nomark albums i've gathered together in roughly 15 years of never throwing anything away.

i remember back in the day, beyond the obvious stuff carried forward on such compilations, some of the more interesting / obscure / flash in the pan stuff could always be found nearer the latter halves of these discs, especially after the Shine comps expanded onto 2 discs. it's this mostly uncharted backwater of bands and songs i wanted to compile for the mix, to really capture the scope of the whole (sorry) movement.

everyone knows the Blurs, Pulps and Oasises of the time; many know the Sleepers, Shed Sevens and Menswe@rs. but for me, Britpop was the Jaguars, the Ruths, the Jocastas... the two bit bands of scrawny yet always palatable indie boys and girls, who'd release a bit of catchy tunage - usually through labels such as Fierce Panda or Creation Records - before either buggering back off home to get real jobs, or landing a bit of a deal, re-recording said tunage with added trumpets, supporting someone a bit higher up on the Britpop food chain for a tour or two, then buggering off back to real life. or becoming Coldplay, which really only happens once.

anyway. obviously this is more of a nostalgia exercise for myself, but hey... any excuse for a bit of rose tinted retrospection. i set 1998 as the cut off point, as in my mind this was the period the whole scene really came off the rails and collapsed in on itself for the final time, leading to the musical void that was the early noughties.

the majority of the mix focusses on what was probably the 2nd wave of the movement (1996-97) - the point where labels were picking up any old ragtag bunch of scenesters and churning out the microhits nonstop.

and yeah, there's a bunch of songs in there that shouldn't strictly speaking be amongst most of the stuff here - be it American, or towards the more rocky end of the stick - but they were tracks i'd also listen to around the time, so are inexplicably linked to the period. besides, if Shine can do it, so can i, right?

finally, there's bound to be some bands - big or small - that i've missed. two obvious ones are Radiohead and Manic Street Preachers, both of whom enjoyed their heydays around the period; but they never really gelled into the scene for me, i always set them apart from everything else (and still do). there's some obscure stuff I couldn't source to add to my iTunes - off the top of my head, Smaller, Bawl, Laxton's Superb, stuff like that - songs that i either didn't know in the first place, or were so small they hardly have a mere mention on the internet. oh, and Northern Uproar were skipped for still being shit, even through the hazy rose tints.
