Much of the film " Lou Reed's Berlin" from director Julian Schnabel is worth checking; this song coming (as on the album) right after "The Bed" and the choir, SO moving. (The same with the visuals applies to Reed and Cale's "Songs For Drella"). I know we are talking about the music but images are worth recording-in some cases-and this is one. The whole "Berlin" LP was so very good after the disappointment of Reed's first solo release then Bowie and others-especially the much underated Mick Ronson-help with "Transformer", something that was gonna be difficult to follow but this was so worthy, and how...

The simple demo version which the Velvets have recorded is about 100% better.

"Staring at my picture book she looks like Mary Queen of Scotts" - oh god, that line...the parallel between Bloody Mary and that female whore protagonist who cut up her wrist...the simple IDEA of setting a parallel here, a comparison...is just brilliant.

This song isn't uplifting at all. It's a beautiful example of Lou Reed knowing just how "bad" his voice is and using this to its full potential: he wrote the song so that the backing would seem optimistic, but he doesn't even bother singing on most of this song, he just says "sad song" in the most depressing monotone. The lyrics are also very dark. This makes for a beautiful juxtaposition between Lou's voice and words and the rest of the song, and suggests that there is a disconnect between the tragedy of the story and the world that keeps going on around it, one that eventually forces Lou to join in on the singing as well (i.e. to mask what he's really feeling). Beautifully thought out and executed album, and this song just caps it off.
