Holidays approaching - time to sum up the year with the best new music...

10 The Swell Season - Strict Joy

I have to thank The Tonight Show with Conan O’brien for introducing me to this dulcet duo. They were performing live and vocalist Glen Hansard’s warm voice in a bluesy ballad called TocarLow Rising seemed awfully palatable to my sensibilities, so I immediately acquired their full album. The album is strong, even though Low Rising remains the most tuneful piece on it. I read that Hansard was the founder of an Irish indie band The Frames and The Swell Season is more of a side project for him and his former girlfriend, Czech pianist Markéta Irglová. They apparently won an Oscar for Best Original Song from the 2007 musical drama Once. Strict Joy is the third studio LP they’ve released together. Markéta can be heard singing lead on a couple of tracks, but the anonymous quality of her voice doesn’t add much to the tapestry of swirling guitars and light folk rhythms. It’s Hansard’s elegantly pensive personality that takes this record on another level, higher than your typical cornershop indie output.

09 Elysian Fields - The Afterlife

Elysian Fields must be the most obscure band in my favourites list. They are so deep under ground that you can comb through Youtube and end up with only a handful of videos where you see them performing in some dark, dingy jazz club for 30 people. And that they are once again a male/female duo (New York-based musicians Oren Bloedow and Jennifer Charles) like The Swell Season strikes me as a humourous coincidence. Humour is one facet of them that attracted me from the start. Jennifer Charles possesses a voice so sultry that it could melt the pants off any man, but she’s not able to wrap herself around the sexual metaphors in Climbing my Dark Hair without the scent of self-irony dripping through. She’s a bit of a clown, lulling and seducing the listener into a mysterious dream where the most exotic bedroom fantasies (whether straight or lesbian) become possible.

08 Tinted Windows - Tinted Windows

Optimistic power pop suits Taylor Hanson like a glove. Even as a daddio he’s still able to switch into youthful Where’s-The-Love-style singing mode and make me feel giddy, like he does on TocarMessing With My Head - first song from the album that caught my attention. He’s also particularly scrumptious in places where the mood bites a little – TocarDead Serious or his self-penned track TocarNothing to Me. Listening to his voice again after a long while, I found myself wishing he was backed up by his own brothers, but I suppose James Iha’s interesting guitar patterns compensate somewhat for the lack of Hanson-ness.

    07 Yeah Yeah Yeahs - It's Blitz!

It’s Blitz! is a little gem of an album that I feel like I haven’t yet started to really appreciate, because it hasn’t completely sunk in yet. Maybe I will give it a higher rating in a year or two once I’ve seen how the music holds up. Indie magazines are collectively drooling over it, but I’m reluctant to fall for what I’m told to fall for. That said... lead singer Karen O’s presence suggests layers of richness under glowing electro-disco beats and in slower numbers she comes quite close to assuaging my concern over the actual substance of this sugar-coated affair. She’s definitely hinting at something more serious than snarky girlie angst, but is it enough to make me care for them beyond this blitz?

06 Harry Potter And The Half-Blood Prince - Original Soundtrack

If you don’t believe that this is the most splendid Harry Potter score since John Williams provided his magic on the Harry Potter And The Prisoner Of Azkaban soundtrack, then listen to In Noctem, Harry & Hermione, Farewell Aragog, When Ginny Kissed Harry and Dumbledore's Farewell for about ten times. There are no roaring and sweeping themes in here, but every delicate composition reveals emotional subtleties that will tug at your heartstrings when given a chance.

05 Lacuna Coil - Shallow Life

A very controversial album that frustrated many old school fans with its slick "Americanized" production and more simplistic lyrical ideas than expected from the Italian gothic metal sextet. However, I enjoyed it a lot. I don’t consider it on par with their early work, but it’s a well crafted rock album, energetic and life-affirming. I never thought I would use this word to describe their music, but Lacuna Coil is FUN to listen to in here. The guitars sound sharper and miss Scabbia spices up her usual weary vocal method with scathing one-liners of a dance diva.

04 Bat for Lashes - Two Suns

TocarDaniel is one of the most stunning songs ever written. If she can keep up with these standards she has set for herself on this record and throw us more ethereal, nocturnal pop of such calibre in the future, I will happily declare myself a proper fan. Go girl.

    03 Muse - The Resistance

I harbor contradictory feelings towards Muse. There are days when I’m convinced that they are incorrigible, hypocritical bitches, making money off of the Twilight soundtrack, while acting as if it was a touch of irony from their part to appear on it; then there are days when I have to admit that not many bands in the world right now do their thing better than they do. Fortunately with Muse I’m not hindered by the issue of separating the artist from the music they make. If I was, or I'd let myself be, I’d miss out on a lot. And whoever deliberately misses out on Muse’s delicious brand of flamboyant stadium rock is a fool.

02 Coldplay - Viva La Vida Or Death And All His Friends

I listened to this album so much over the past six months that I kind of neglected the fact that it was officially released in June, 2008, and I just happened to be late to the party. Which is why in my memory it will be associated with the summer of 2009.

01 The Veils - Sun Gangs

Not a big surprise. Now, I don’t think it’s the most consistent LP of the year, but it offers some of the best songwriting from Finn Andrews so far and that’s saying something. Nothing from Viva La Vida or The Resistance reaches the depth and timelessness of Sit Down by the Fire, the soaring Jeff Buckley-esque beauty of The Letter or the gloomy atmospherics of Larkspur. Andrews’ voice and its range are simply divine throughout – he alternates between tenor and baritone, drama and tenderness, sensual belting (It Hits Deep) and cracking animalistic screams (Killed by the Boom), and every nuance of mood and emotion in his complex vocalizing is brought to the fore thanks to the impeccable production by Graham Sutton and Bernard Butler. An interesting note: Canadian folk-songstress Basia Bulat sings backing vocals on The House She Lived In and Scarecrow.

This year has been a year of amazing discoveries for me (new and old artists) and a year of radical changes (both positive and negative). When 2008 was left fairly pale and uneventful in comparison, I will always remember 2009 in music.

  • Miss Li & Göteborgs Symfoniker, Konserthuset, Gothenburg. November 6 2009.

    Dez 4 2009, 22h54 por turbomatic

Miss Li with the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra, Konserthuset, Göteborg. November 6 2009.

When I first saw the ad for this show I was confused by the pairing of Miss Li and Lasse Berghagen (to be honest I'm still a bit confused). But I just couldn't miss the opportunity to see Miss Li with a full Symphony Orchestra so I bought tickets for me and my mom...

Conductor Anders Berglund, Linda and Lars.

Lasse started with a few songs, it's not my music so I won't comment on it, atleast it was interesting to watch and listen to the symphony orchestra. Then Miss Li came out wearing the same cute red dress she wore when I saw her at Peace & Love 2008. Her first song was a fleshed out version of TocarDancing The Whole Way Home. It was followed by TocarI'm sorry, he's mine, not my favorite song of hers but the orchestra added a new dimension to it and made it interesting again.

Then came the first big surprise of the show, Miss Li doing a wonderful cover of Ding dong, a song Lasse sang in the Eurovision Song Contest 1973. A fun song that was perfect for her, sounded like a song she could have written for her first album but sung in swedish. It was also the song that got the greatest response from the audience. It would have been even better if Linda would have sung the "Ram-taram-ta-dulje-dum-doo" herself though. Please record it and release it as a b-side or something... :)

The next surprise was the song I was hoping for the most... the first ever live performance of TocarThe Boy In The Fancy Suit. One of the best songs from Dancing The Whole Way Home. I guess the reason it hasn't been played earlier is because of all the strings. So this was the perfect show to play it and it sounded wonderful.

The last of her own songs was TocarOh Boy that got a great reworking with the orchestra, a fun version with tuba and stuff. Usually that song ends in total chaos but it looked like Linda was fighting to hold back to end it in the very controlled chaos of a full symphony orchestra... :) Then they did another Berghagen song, Min Pappas Stora Skor as a duet.

Me and my mom had a fun night out and the few Miss Li songs made it worth the ticket and left me wanting more. I would love to see her do a whole show like this on her own with more of her slower songs that's often left out of the ordinary shows and mixing it up with covers of old jazz, blues, country, 60's soul and more 60's schlager. Imagine her singing April Stevens' TocarI Want A Lip or Love Kitten, something by Peggy Lee or Julie London... or Lill-Babs' En tuff brud i lyxförpackning, Towa Carson's Alla har glömt or Loretta Lynn's TocarFist City, that one would fit her perfectly! Or maybe something by Tom Waits, Janis Joplin or I Want You by Bob Dylan... Neil Young's Helpless... I could go on. I think she could pull off any of those and make it work.

More pics and a short video documentary!

  • My Hummingbird 100 Female Songs of all-time which I voted for + some more

    Nov 17 2009, 17h55 por BlackCoffeeDuck

This from the HOTTEST FEMALE SONGS!!! Kind-off like Triple J's Hottest 100 of All-time early in the year but only female artists because there was very few women in Triple J's countdown. It's run by a new beer called Hummingbird and some pay TV channel (I don't know which one because I don't watch it). It's a cool idea and I found it so hard to cut it down just to ten in the end so I just made my own 100 tracks from my favourite female artists.

    My Top Ten Votes
    1. Portishead - Glory Box
    2. Kate Bush - TocarCloudbusting

This was very, very, very, very hard (have I made it clear how hard this was?) But I picked songs which I could listen to on repeat which I have done in the past (not here on last.fm yet). Most tracks are from the 90's too (I grew-up in that decade, if you haven't all ready guessed). It seems like last.fm's journals are made up of long lists of songs so I've joined in again with my very, very long short list of songs that didn't make it into the top ten. These songs can be any thing that I love really It's from A to Z (well it's Y really, then V). It's selected from the list of tracks which are on their website but I've added a few of my own ones at the end. If you have no idea what I'm talking about go here and read all about it (there's only 4 days left to vote so hop too it).

So that is it. It wasn't so hard really (but cutting it down to ten was). I've most likely missed something which I'll remember later and be kicking myself about but I'm pretty happy with this mix. It seems my favorite female singer songwriter is Beth Gibbons with my number 1 track in my top ten. Plus two more Portishead songs and one from Beth Gibbons & Rustin Man project album. If you don't know she wrote My Secret for Jane Birkin a few years ago too. That adds up to five tracks out of one hundred which is not many but more that anyone else.

Anyway what do you think??? I liked writing these journal entries but I do like reading you comments and It's also the only way I can tell if anyone has been reading or looking at them. Thanks and bye for now.
  • shut up.

    Out 24 2009, 4h27 por intheyearmmmmlv

    01. How did you get into #31?

Chuck Berry - I've been hearing him on oldies radio since before I could talk.

    02. What was the first song you ever heard by #22?

that's weird, the person I stole this from had Elliott Smith at number 22 also.
the first one I remember hearing was TocarAngeles, but I don't think that's right. I had listened to him before but Angeles was the song that made me love him.

    03. What's your favorite lyric by #41 ?
hmmm...I think a lot of them are really good although sometimes a little cheesy.
I've got torn up knees and calloused fingertips
broken vocal chords and busted lips
    is a good one though.
    Lucero - All Sewn Up

    04. What is your favorite album by #49 ?

Make Yourself although I haven't listened to it in ages.

    05. How many albums by #13 do you own?

Only three, Green River, and Chronicle Vols. 1 and 2. in my opinion, they didn't have that many good ones. when they were good they were awesome but when they weren't they were terrible.

    06. What is your favorite song by #50 ?

I don't know I don't listen to them very much anymore. probably Bastard's Way, for nostalgia's sake.

    07. Is there a song by #4 that makes you sad?

not really. I dunno, maybe Grandma Song. I'm even sure if it's supposed to be sad, but it kind of feels that way.

    08. What is your least favorite song by #15 ?

I don't know. I think a lot of Iron & Wine's songs don't really sound like much, I think at a certain point you can have music that's TOO soft. some of the songs feel like they don't have any substance to them sometimes. but it does make for music that's really easy to go to sleep to.

    09. What is your favorite song by #5

dude too many. in my opinion every single track from From Here To Infirmary, Goddamnit, and Good Mourning are fucking gold.

    10. Is there a song by #6 that makes you happy?

TocarCountry Roads probably the most, but John Denver is happy music in general.

    11. What is your favorite album by #40 ?

    Songs From Under The Sink.

    12. What is your favorite song by #10 ?

No Children, hands down. but TocarGoing to Georgia also has a very special place in my heart.

    13. What is a good memory you have involving #33 ?

I grew up listening to The Beach Boys, so there's a lot of nostalgia attached to them. But my ex boyfriend opened my eyes to the brilliance of Pet Sounds, and that's also another really good memory. getting ridiculously baked and lying there listening to it over and over again, only moving to get up and flip the record.

    14. What is your favourite song by #37 ?

I don't know probably TocarFree Pizza For Life, but I have a love/hate relationship with Ghost Mice. I can't help but love it sometimes but if they come up on shuffle when I'm not in the mood, I will scrunch up my face and change it as soon as possible because their voices are so incredibly grating sometimes.

    15. Is there a song by #19 that makes you happy?

Weezer is just happy music in general man. but particularly anything off the Green Album or the Blue Album. even the ones that are supposed to be angsty, it's like the happiest music on the planet.

    16. How many times have you seen #24 live?

none. I almost saw AC/DC last year, but ended up backing out on spending $90 for one concert.

    17. What is the first song you heard by #23 ?

Muse. It had to have been something from Origin Of Symmetry.

    18. What is your favorite album by #11 ?

    Requiem, no contest.

    19. Who is your favorite member of #1 ?

Dude I had such a crush on Tom Gabel the entire time I was in high school, until I saw them live and I seriously think if Andrew Seward had asked me to sacrifice my virginity to him on stage that night in front of everyone, I probably would have done it, no questions asked.

    20. How many times have you seen #14 live?

High on Fire, just once, but it may be twice very soon.

    21. What is a good memory you have involving #45 ?

Neutral Milk Hotel...I can't really think of anything.

    22. What is your favorite song by #16 ?

Either Grenades or Healer...or really anything from Meanderthal.

    23. What is the first song you heard by #47 ?

I think it was Dick in Dixie, but if not that then definitely something off Straight to Hell.

    24. What is your favorite album by #3 ?

I don't know, I don't think it matters much for an all covers band, but probably Love Their Country.

    25. What is your favourite song by #18 ?

    Baroness? probably Coeur.

    26. What is the first song you heard by #38 ?

I have no idea. I'm sure I was totally stoned at the time. (Melvins)

    27. What is your favourite lyric that #21 has sung?

I don't know...Green Day? some of them are pretty insightful I guess. (?)

    28. What is your favourite song by #2 ?

god picking favorites is so hard. some of The Avett Brothers' songs seriously bring me close to tears. they make some damn beautiful music. but just for the sake of picking one I'll go with The Ballad Of Love And Hate

    29. What is the first song you heard by #32 ?

I'm sure it was Blitzkreig Bop.

    30. What is your favorite song by #8 ?

Favorite song by The Beatles? I'm going to take that as a rhetorical question.

    31. How many times have you seen #17 live?

I've only seen Propagandhi once, a loooong time ago.

    32. Is there a song by #44 that makes you happy?

Teardrops on Table 39. don't ask why, I have no idea.

    33. What is your favorite album by #12 ?

Loretta Lynn? I don't know, probably Coal Miner's Daughter, to be completely honest.

    34. What is the worst song by #29 ?

The Ataris have quite a few terrible songs. I can't pick just one. I also can't believe these guys are my #29? I think this must be due to shuffle because the last time I remember consciously choosing to listen to them was like 4 or 5 years ago.

    35. What was the first song you heard by #34 ?

    Ten Things. Oh, Paul Baribeau.

    36. What is your favorite album by #42 ?

Loretta Lynn, with Melvins a close second

What was the last song you listened to?
I'm listening to TocarElectric Funeral by Black Sabbath right now

What's in your CD player right now?
either a Wayne Hancock CD james made for me forever ago or a Lucero mix I made forever ago

    What's your favorite local band/group?
what constitutes local? being from the area? or not having toured anywhere yet? I can't even begin to pick my favorite band from Atlanta, there are wayyy too many damn good ones around here.

What was the last show you attended?
    GWAR a couple weeks ago

What was the greatest show you've ever been to?
[event=]Scion Rock Fest[/event], if only for the sheer number of amazing bands I got to see in one day. excluding that then...either Against Me! the first time I saw them (during their heyday) or Mastodon, Converge, and Priestess in '07

What's the shittiest show you've ever been to?
GWAR was kind of shitty this time around, because of the crowd, not the band. that's the only one that comes to mind.

What's the most musically involved you have ever been?
I'm not sure what this is asking, but I rocked the shit out of the marimba in high school. I also won our drumline "best pit" at PASIC for my wicked maraca solo. yes, I'm totally serious.

Who is one band/artist you've never seen live but always wanted to?
wayyyy too many to list. I don't get to enough shows, I mean it. and there are tons that have broken up since I got into them that I kick myself for not going to see while I could have...

Name 5 of your favorite songs of all time?
I'm not just going to name 5 random songs, and I'm not going to attempt to pick favorites either.

How many music related videos/DVDs do you own?
    I don't know. not many.

How many concerts/shows have you been to, total?

tie between Against Me!, Mastodon, and Converge.

What is your favorite movie soundtrack?
stop asking me favorites. I can't do it.

What was your last musical "phase" before you wisened up?
I've always gone through phases, each one opens my eyes to all sorts of new stuff, but the only one I've really abandoned and consider bad music was probably my pop-punk phase. not that pop-punk is bad, but the pop-punk I listened to when I got into pop-punk was terrible. I still listen to a little pop-punk, but it's all much better stuff now.

What's your "guilty pleasure" that you hate to admit to liking?
The Starting Line and Cartel. I realize I just contradicted my answer to the previous question.

What album have you purchased the most copies of?

  • FAKING IT: The Quest for Authenticity in Popular Music - Hugh Barker & Yuval Taylor

    Ago 23 2009, 10h18 por Alioshka

This is the entire introduction to the book, and it took me almost fifteen minutes to write up, but that's just how important this book is. It is a book of revelations. Everyone in the music industry- and I know you're all part time djs- and all fans of popular music will find it revelatory.
What I found best was to read it near the computer, so as to look unfamiliar songs and artists they reference up on youtube. And then you're learning!
Here's a link to an actual review http://tunedintomusic.wordpress.com/2007/05/19/review-faking-it-the-quest-for-authenticity-in-popular-music-hugh-barker-yuval-taylor/

    Introduction

When we listen to popular music, some songs strike us as "real" and others as "fake." This book explores that distinction, and how, especially in the last fifty years, the quest for authenticity, for the "real," has become a dominant factor in musical taste. Whether it be the folklorist's search for forgotten bluesmen, the rock critic's elevation of raw power over sophistication, or the importance of bullet wounds to the careers of hip-hop artists, the aesthetic of the "authentic musical experience," with its rejection of music that is labeled contrived, pretentious, artificial, or overly commercial, has played a major role in forming musical tastes and canons, with wide-ranging consequences.

What do we mean when we call something authentic? A lot of things, as it turns out, but the word seems to be defined primarily in opposition to "faking it." In a KISS concert, the band wears makeup and plays songs about people they pretend to be, all with the explicit aim of making money rather than telling the truth about themselves or the world they live in. Such a performance can be wildly entertaining, but it's not considered authentic.

When people say a musical performance or recording is authentic, they might refer to representational authenticity, or music that is exactly what it says it is-- unlike, say, Milli Vanilli posing as singers, which they weren't. They might refer to cultural authenticity, or music that reflects a cultural tradition-- the traditional black guitarist and singer Mississippi John Hurt's version of "Stagger Lee," an old African American song about an outlaw, is more culturally authentic than the Grateful Dead's. They might refer to personal authenticity, or music that reflects the person or people who are making it-- when Ozzy Osbourne sings "Iron Man," he tells us nothing about his own life, but when Loretta Lynn sings "Coal Miner's Daughter," she tells us a lot.

Every performance is to some degree "faked"-- nobody goes out on stage and sings about exactly what they did and felt that day. Authenticity is an absolute, a goal that can never be fully attained, a quest. Sincerity and autobiography are techniques one can employ in the service of personal authenticity, just as using traditional instruments and singing old songs are techniques one can use in the service of cultural authenticity. But it's important to distinguish the means from the end.

This quest for authenticity has inspired countless musicians to make heartfelt and often groundbreaking music, from Jimmie Rodgers, a pioneer of country music, to Kurt Cobain, a pioneer of alternative rock. On the other hand, some great music-- including entire genres such as rockabilly, Bubblegum, and disco-- has been scorned as inauthentic. At times, the need to "keep it real" has limited the kinds of music that musicians aspire to make and that critics and listeners appreciate.

White blues fans, for example, redefined the genre in the name of authenticity to exclude anything too jazzy or upbeat, thus enforcing a snobbish and racist exclusion of certain blues artists from the canon because they were too sophisticated. Instead, they lauded the most primitive blues artists they could find, such as John Lee Hooker, from whom blacks turned away. In this way, the quest for authenticity did tremendous damage to the blues by codifying certain traditions and limiting innovation.

Now, after punk, house, grunge, garage, and hip-hop, ideas of authenticity have seeped into even such transparently "inauthentic" genres as heavy metal (Metallica), techno (Moby), and showtunes (Rent). Especially in the music aimed at white teenage males, authenticity is seen as the sine qua non of artistic success. It is rare to come across a songwriter, rock singer, or rapper these days who does not aim to "keep it real" for his audience, or who doesn't talk about the difference between making it and selling out. Listeners too are acutely conscious of how much the artists they admire are faking it. It seems that one of the job requirements for a popular musician these days is convincing your audience that you're not the phony celebrity you appear to be. Case in point: Jennifer Lopez's biggest hit ran, "Don't be fooled by the rocks that I got-- I'm just Jenny from the block." Even Donna Summer, the queen of disco and a brilliant musical innovator, castigates her former self as "fake" in her autobiography Ordinary Girl.

Of course, for many there is no distinction between real and fake: witness Courtney Love's statement, "I fake it so real that I'm beyond fake." In certain subcultures, being "natural" is either suspect or out of the question, and being theatrical is the only real possibility. For many academics as well, everything is more or less "constructed", and, as the Beatles said, "Nothing is real."

But while we don't claim that the distinctions we make in this book will apply to everyone, being authentic, or real, has been important to a large number of musicians and their fans, and that's where this book comes in. A number of other books have praised the virtues of authenticity and damned the fakes and the sellouts, but it's surprising that no single book has ever addressed the subject in all its complexity or shown how the quest for authenticity has shaped the music we listen to. It's as if the concept of realism in art had never been fully addressed-- as if the only books on the subject praised verisimilitude. The question of authenticity in popular music is not only fundamental to understanding the music's history but fundamental to thinking about, listening to, and performing it as well.

Faking It tackles this question by examining, in detail, ten turning points in music history, at most of which the musicians were faced with a choice: fake it or keep it real. Why were these choices made and what were the consequences? We start with Kurt Cobain's choice of a Leadbelly song to close his career, and then go in chronological order from twentieth-century field recordings to Moby's use of them at the turn of the twenty-first century. Along the way, we discuss the birth of modern country music, the moment Elvis reinvented rock'n'roll, the Monkees' decision to play their instruments, the defining moment of disco with a seventeen minute faked orgasm, the "public image" of punk rock, and much more.
  • The 9513 Last.fm Chart Update (5-31-09)

    Jun 5 2009, 15h48 por Carpetbagger513

So much for thinking that a two-hour special devoted to George Strait would make him the sure-fire #1 artist on the charts this week. The best he could do was tie for fourth with Patty Loveless at 22 listeners. Sugarland is on top this week with 24 listeners, and Alan Jackson and Johnny Cash are in second place with 23. The Artist of the ’00s did manage to beat the Artists of the ’90s (Garth Brooks with 21 listeners), ’80s (Alabama, 8 ), ’70s (Loretta Lynn, 9) and ’60s (Marty Robbins, 5) at least.

Alright, so who’s going to be the artist of the ’10s, then? Sugarland? They’ve got some momentum already, but the odds of Jennifer Nettles not going solo at some point are slim. The other artists in the Top 10 include Brad Paisley (20 listeners), George Jones and Lee Ann Womack, (19 each) and Tim McGraw (18). Of those, it would seem that Paisley stands the best chance of having a good decade-long run. You can’t rule out either Carrie Underwood (15) or Taylor Swift (14), of course, though the fact that this Artist of the Decade award isn’t open to popular vote might hurt them in the long run. Maybe it’s someone who’s just starting to make an impact in country music or is still standing in the shadows. Jason Aldean (15)? Bomshel (somewhere between 0 and 2)? If you’d like, post your pick in the comments section and then bookmark this page for reference in 10 years’ time.

On the Top Albums Chart, Sugarland takes the top spot with Love On The Inside, along with perennial favorite Call Me Crazy from Lee Ann Womack (13 listeners apiece). Right behind them were Fearless from Taylor Swift (12) and Sounds So Good by Ashton Shepherd (11). Strait had Somewhere Down in Texas and Troubador in the Top 10 with 10 listeners each. Just outside of the Top 10 was That Lonesome Song by Jamey Johnson, which I finally got around to buying last week. If only the country blogs had written more about the guy; I would have picked it up a lot earlier if I knew it was that good. Appropos of nothing, kudos to Johnson for making sure scraggly beards don’t become the sole property of indie folk singers. Take that, Iron & Wine guy.

TocarAmarillo By Morning – the George Strait version – was the Top Track of the week, with 8 people listening to it. I’m trying to decide if John Rich’s rendition in the tribute concert made them nostalgic for the original version, or if they listened to it to clear the Rich version out of their heads. Troubador also made the Top 10 with 6 listeners. Ashton Shepherd’s small but mighty fan base gave her three tracks in the Top 10. Also featured in the Top 10 are future Grand Ole Opry members Montgomery Gentry with TocarMy Town and non-Opry member Lee Ann Womack (wrap your head around that) with TocarLast Call. Keith Urban, last seen on TV doing a pretty good job singing Marty Robbins‘ songs, had his decidedly non-Robbins song TocarKiss A Girl in the Top 10 as well. To continue our Strait theme, we had three people each listen to “Walk Of Life” by Shooter Jennings and Dire Straits. I have nothing against Shooter, and I’m all for artists singing whatever they want to sing, but I don’t know why anyone would pick his completely average cover version when the original song is pretty much perfect.

For free music this week, check out a couple of songs from John Paul Keith & the One Four Fives. According to his Last.fm bio, he’s spent his career being this close to having some major breakthroughs (being a member of the V-Roys, touring with Ryan Adams) and came even closer to retiring from music altogether. That would have been a shame, as the two songs available for download on Last.fm, “Lookin’ For a Thrill” and “TocarOtherwise,” are pretty good. They sort of remind me of Marty Stuart’s music – catchy, nice lead guitar, and less than 2:30 long. Check them out, and thanks for reading.
