  • "Edgily Shiny" - Extended Playlist 170809 - www.2ser.com 107.3FM

    Ago 19 2009, 8h54 por Lars_ollo

We start off with a bit of early nineties pop and dub house disco thanks to Saint Etienne with a track from their third album Tiger Bay and a Guerilla Records classic before picking up the brash and edgily shiny attitude - both retro and futuro. How fab is the ZE RECORDS retrospective on Strut - Mutant Disco!
Moody muscles in with autumnal analog from Eyeless in Gaza and stays right until the last minutes of the program, peppered with some spoken word from William S. Burroughs and Vladimir Mayakovsky, courtesy of brilliant and prolific re-issue anthropologists LTM and Sub Rosa. And Would You?

  • ONE YEAR of Last.fm (11/21/07-11/21/08)!

    Nov 21 2008, 8h37 por MoogleFan

Today is my one-year anniversary of being a Last.fm user!!! I was interested in using it back in 2005, but, alas, I did not have high speed then, and I put off getting an account until I did so (which was not until November of 2007), and in just one year of utilizing this fine site, I...
+ scrobbled 23,000+ tracks by 1,400+ artists; first track was Gang of Four - TocarNot Great Men, I believe from choosing tag radio for The Fall or Television. I decided to put my songs on shuffle and see which one came up for the midnight posting and the track was was...Can - TocarHalleluhwah
+ added 73 friends (4 that I had known personally beforehand, and many of which I have gotten to explore their music taste and general coolness through Shoutbox communication)
+ uploaded my instrumental music in March and continued to add more tracks throughout the months (Marilyn Roxie), including a protest song against the Last.fm layout change in July
+ started a group (Rimmel), gained leadership of a few pre-existing ones: (basically, i just wanted my own group., Adam Green, John Peel, FreeMusic, Shaman King), and joined a bunch of others.
+ discovered a myriad of glorious bands due to a result of recommendations from other users and friends who are on Last.fm (THANK YOU ALL! ! !), searching through artist connections in groups, member charts, tag radio, and automated recommendations, including: Air, American Death Ray, Boards of Canada, Blood Red Shoes, The Chameleons, Crystal Castles, Dark Day, Delia Derbyshire, Lizzy Mercier Descloux, Fad Gadget, The Feelies, Gang of Four, Glass Candy, Gong, The Gun Club, Ben Kweller, Ladytron, The Legendary Pink Dots, Low, Liquid Liquid, Maximum Joy, Mew, Minus the Bear, M.I.A., Mission of Burma, Pink Industry, Ratatat, Santogold, Scary Mansion, Raymond Scott, Sia, Sigur Ros, The Soft Boys, Suicide, Wire, Zero 7
+ many of friends on Last.fm have their music uploaded to the site; very good stuff!!: Cheap Mondays, Maggot Brain, Mt. Moon, John Murphy Music, Panda steps in chocolate, Streetxlite, Surukei, Richard Sydney, Tran Qual, Voidfullness
+ customized my profile with some of the normal trappings, such as a quilt of most-listened to albums, sociomap, OMI pie chart (currently non-functioning, alas), Who's Amung Us counter, most recent acquisitions + music map widget from Rate Your Music: http://rateyourmusic.com/~MarilynRoxie

Last.fm really prompted me to explore other areas of the internet for music recommendations, radio, and networking online. I also...
+ started a music blog, A Future in Noise, which I plan to utilize and promote more next year, as well as collaborate with those interested
+ got going on Robert Dimery's "1,001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die", starting at around 15-20% around April, now at 54% completion. Even though I may have heard of some of these before, I first really listened to and enjoyed their music as a result of trying to complete this list (I got the book, at last, a few days ago): Big Black, Nick Drake, Faust, Serge Gainsbourg, Buddy Holly, Killing Joke, Magazine, The Magnetic Fields, John Martyn, The Monks, Penguin Cafe Orchestra, Ananda Shankar, The Slits, The Sonics, Tangerine Dream, The Teardrop Explodes, Tom Waits
+ signed up at MeeMix, Rate Your Music, got a MySpace Music profile, Livejournal, etc. and found these bands as a result of one or more of those sites, or from one of these reasons: watching a late-night tv show, an mp3 blog, or from a non-Last.fm person: Archie Bronson Outfit, Nicole Atkins, John Cale, Coconut Records[/artist, Leonard Cohen, Coil, Essential Logic, Flying Color, Ladytron, Mark Lanegan, Luxuria, Midnight Movies, thenewno2, Nurse With Wound, The Residents, Talk Talk, Wolfsheim, YMCK

A few of things I didn't know, prior to signing up on Last.fm (other than the bands, etc.):
    + what minimal synth was
+heck, what "scrobbling" referred to, for that matter
+ how much thousands of others and myself would cringe about a website's layout change

Many other important music-related events for me happened during this first year of being on Last.fm. I finally figured out how to use most of the functions on my Korg Triton LE Workstation, got a digital 8-track, and begrudgingly nailed down music theory / sheet music-reading concepts by taking a course on it, which turned out to not be as bad as I thought (though I still have to work through the The Who and The Doors sheet music books I got). I went to see Adam Green w/ Tim Fite in concert, lamented the break-up of Dirty Pretty Things, and saw thenewno2 live over Stickam's webcam feature, even chatting with the band beforehand with a bunch of other fans!

I'm currently working through National Novel Writing Month, trying to catch up on books I haven't read and Japanese kanji, experimenting with photography, still playing video games now and again (only just recently did I pick up The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess!); I'll be plugging along with making my music, and hopefully will be teaching a History of Popular Music: pre-1950's - 2000s class at my former school next semester! :) Despite what people may have observed from current trends, this year has seemed to have a plethora of releases and singles from bands that I already liked, and some new artists releasing brilliant debut albums. I'm definitely curious about what 2009 will bring! Thanks Last.fm, friends, and artists for making this site a worthwhile place for music and community.

    ~Marilyn Roxie

  • Eleven good ones (fall of 2008 selections)

    Nov 20 2008, 12h41 por talking_animal

    1. Mademoiselle: This is a hard one to find, but it’s worth it; Berry has a sweet, strong voice, and the songs are well put together, with nice melodic hooks and interesting instrumentation. Best of my latest slice of the French CD market.
    2. Un Día: This one is a doozy. Juana Molina hasn’t really changed her style over the past four releases, but it’s gotten deeper and more intense. Instead of drifting back into a kind of folksy, droney sound, Srta. Molina has started to get the hang of the tape loop and delay, creating gauzy palettes of sound that continue to reverberate into your brain long after hearing them. Don’t miss this one.
    3. Set Luna: A great Senegalese flamenco record by Julia Sarr & Patrice Larose. Sarr sings in Wolof, I guess, although it doesn’t sound like the guttural Wolof I’m familiar with, and Larose plays pretty nifty guitar lines around her vocals. This one is good, and I’m kicking myself for coming to it a little late, like three years late. The duo avoid the easy-listening trap of making the arrangements too lush, but still hit the sweet spot for late-night reading or quiet evenings at home.
    4. Nests: This one falls somewhere between Sleater-Kinney and Joan as Police Woman. It’s got the confessional vibe, plus the angry guitars, and the female singer of She Keeps Bees has a pretty good voice and sense of phrasing.
    5. Mediocre: The arrangements aren’t as good as they are on the Berry album, but Ximena Sariñana has an amazing set of pipes and really puts her songs out there. This is more pop than Julieta Venegas’s work, but more straight-ahead singer-songwriter stuff than Shakira. I’ve always liked her voice, and I’m glad to see that it’s held up for an entire first album.
    6. Changing Of The Seasons: This is not functionally different from the first Ane Brun record, but it’s a welcome function that it performs. It’s a little hard to evaluate this one evenhandedly because the first record she made, A Temporary Dive is a stone classic, in which great confessional songs brimful of emotion follow one another to make a coherent suite that will have an effect on you after only one or two listens. Compared to that one, Changing of the Seasons doesn’t have the coherence but still has great songs. It’s a good scandi-pop record, especially for sitting down quietly (second one on this list, I see).
    7. Gibraltar: One of the reviews on the store site compared Abd Al Malik’s work on this to the songs of Jacques Brel. I’ve never really been able to get into Brel, but this Gibraltar record might force me to reexamine his work. Although Abd Al Malik is known as a slammer, or French-language rapper, the best songs on here aren’t really rap, but spoken word. The man has fantastic flow and phrasing, for sure, and his lyrics just kind of hit you and root you to the spot without being tremendously overbearing and rhythmic. It’s as if he’s telling you a story . I bought it on a whim and am really glad I did.
    8. Liquid Liquid: I have been waiting for this one for a while, as I’ve been carefully collecting postpunk stars like Lydia Lunch, Lizzy Mercier Descloux, and Defunkt for years. I used to know one of the Liquid Liquid alumni and he was a fantastic person as well as a gifted musician, so when the opportunity to pick this one up, I didn’t waste it. It’s a great set of songs, full of rubbery grooves and strange percussion all put together into really tight songs.
    9. Midnight Boom: One that takes all those post-punk lessons and applies it in a fresh and new way suitable for 2008. Each song is full of charisma and groove, the kind of record you want to bring to all your friends’ parties and introduce to them. There’s not a bad one on the entire disc.
    10. Futurismo: This includes the new-generation Veloso, Caetano’s son Moreno, and is the record for everyone who is tired of MPB, or current Brazilian pop music. Moreno sounds a lot like his dad, but the arrangements are fantastic and intriguing and different, every one of them. It’s like these guys sat down and said, what can we do to make really interesting music, then they took some notes and did it.
    11. Tableau de Chasse: The second album from Claire Diterzi is just as good as the first one, which is saying something. The first record was a durable electropop disc. Diterzi doesn’t have the most fantastic well-rounded voice, like Berry above does, but she knows how to use it against a chilly texture to bring warmth to her lyrics.

  • Lykke Li at the Thekla, 06.10.08

    Out 10 2008, 11h22 por laurasnapes

Mon 6 Oct – Lykke Li, Yoav
There’s a guy like Big Jeff at every gig; flailing around to the quietest ballads, rubbing their sweaty paunch on your face, and annoying everyone, but there’s the rare occasion they actually psyche up a flagging artist and transform the evening. “You have to stop dancing so much, I’m going to crack up!” giggles Lykke Li surprisingly, after singing ‘Melodies and Desires’ to her feet. Subject to a relentless tour since November 2007, you can’t blame her for being subdued, but suddenly she’s transformed; furiously thrashing a cymbal during ‘I’m Good I’m Gone’ with her left hand, and cutting jagged shapes with the other. She jumps to the floor during ‘Dance Dance Dance’ (for a face-off with Jeff), pumping her shoulders, reminiscent of pioneering XX-chromosomed dignitaries from new wave notable Lizzy Mercier Descloux to Bat for Lashes and Camille. The frustrated mews of ‘Little Bit’ float through the cage of her elbows, she clutches the air, frowning like a doe interrupted by headlights, but then breaks into the Justice-esque playground sing-along of ‘Breaking It Up’, slinking into A Tribe Called Quest’s ‘TocarCan I Kick It?’ Yes you can, Li. Maybe even better than Jeff can.

  • Good Music; Few Listeners! +Comments

    Jul 2 2008, 6h22 por MoogleFan

Anyone reading this post is more than welcome to make recommendations of other cool, interesting artists with less than 50,000 and/or 100,000 listeners. The numbers here are those that appeared at the first posting of this journal entry. All the artists/bands on this page are ones that I like...I have noticed that, regarding artists/bands with 'few' listeners (thousands aren't really few, but they're not really world-wide fame like those artists and bands with 500,000+ have), there are patterns: 1) people aren't often interested in investigating artists' solo careers (unless you are Peter Gabriel, Iggy Pop, or Lou Reed), 2) bands that weren't promoted correctly are going to have trouble, 3) artists/bands that are really, really weird aren't accessible to many, so they have trouble getting popular (Björk and The Flaming Lips are excempt from this). I'm going to take this opportunity also to plug my music, Marilyn Roxie, and the music of my friends, John Murphy Music, Mt. Moon, Panda steps in chocolate, Surukei, Streetxlite, and Voidfullness, which is all delightful instrumental stuff. EDIT: I have made additional connection and started alphabetizing (by first name, not last, at the moment), plus added artists formerly grouped with 'few listeners' which have now broken 100,000+! Thanks for the comments so far~! Now, on with the list:
