I saw them live in a pub in London (the Bull & Gate, Kentish Town, just down the road from the Forum, almost opposite the tube station) in 1992 or 1993, with some friends of mine supporting (Live, of course, were far from famous then. None of us had heard of them). He was wearing a kind of woolly almost Rasta type hat, and I thought it was cool and that I should get something similar (still haven't). Strangely enough I had the impression all night that he'd have a shaved head under it, but when he took it off he had a mop of hair on top. My thoughts must have psychically gotten through to him and caused him to feel the urge to shave his head a little later. I remember thinking they were quite cool and being strongly reminded of REM, which, now listening to 'Throwing Copper' still seems reasonable, but they were mellower then, far less pompous stadium rock. Seems they did 1 OK l.p., maybe 2 & then turned into cack. Commerce is always a pressure to play to the lowest common denominator.
