You are right tetesbyzantines, in the original french lyrics the shadow is the ordinary life the author (who was in the resistance) wishes to return to at the end of the war. In the english version the shadows is probably referring to l'armée des ombres (the shadows army) as was called the french resistance. To boklo, there is a great post rock cover of the song by Electrelane (http://www.lastfm.fr/music/Electrelane/Axes/The+Partisan)

"Then we'll come from the shadows." Original: "On nous oubliera/Nous rentrerons dans l'ombre" (We will forget/We will return to the shadows"). Such small changes, yet they produce such a change in the meaning, don't they? I suppose this version speaks of emerging into the light of peace when conflict is over, free to live, while the original speaks of returning to ordinary life and living once again as a pedestrian, living in the shadows and eventually forgotten. Quel interessant!
