My Top 25 Albums (as of right now)
Jun 29 2008, 22h16 por margybee
My current top 25 album picks.
A disclaimer to those who look for certain albums on these lists: This is based only on albums I own, so of course I'm missing some great ones here. I had to cut out a heck of a lot of wonderful albums that I do own, too. It should also be known that the order I've placed them in (and even, to an extent, the albums I've chosen) could change simply based on my mood or the time of day. That said, here we go!
25. Country Willie by Willie Nelson. I don't know why I include this, but everything here just works. He's not known for this album, really, but I think the songwriting is fantastic and his voice sounds better than usual.
24. Rumours by Fleetwood Mac. Well, this is just pure California pop, isn't it? So many great songs here. Yes, it's hugely popular and has sold millions, and it's probably a little overrated. But hey, I love it.
23. LET IT BLEED, by The Rolling Stones. My favorite Rolling Stones album, I think, although Exile is pretty awesome, too. I kind of like the country/rockabilly thing they've got going on here on a few of the songs.
22. 6 and 12 String Guitar, by Leo Kottke. Absolutely virtuosic guitar playing on this record. And the tunes are nice, too. Very enjoyable.
21. August and Everything After, by The Counting Crows. This has been a favorite for a while. It's so melancholy and emotionally over-wrought, especially in the vocals. It's a great set of songs. I don't think they ever topped this.
20. John Denver's Greatest Hits, by John Denver. This music just puts me in a good mood. It's sunny sing-along road music (although the songs aren't really as cheerful as they sound). You can hear everything in this man's voice. I think his version of Leaving on a Jet Plane (a song he actually wrote) tops all the others.
19. Essential Steve Earle, by Steve Earle. My parents listened to him while I was growing up, so this is a bit nostalgic. He was an excellent songwriter, though, and his style is unlike any other. I love "I Ain't Ever Satisfied."
18. No Name Face, by Lifehouse. This was my favorite for a long time. It's still wonderful. I still think this album has some of the greatest lyrics I've ever heard. The song "Simon" just blows my mind.
17. Mr. Tambourine Man, by The Byrds. Also music that puts a smile on my face. These guys perfected the harmony thing, didn't they? Beautiful stuff. They did a heck of a lot of Dylan covers, and they're all good. I always think of them as a kind of cross between the Beatles and Bob Dylan.
16. Five Leaves Left, by Nick Drake. This is sad stuff. This guy's delivery of his songs is really something else. Just the most mellow, melancholy-infused, affecting stuff you'll hear. He lays it out there.
15. Imagine, by John Lennon. What can I say about this? It's a great album. More listenable than his first (although that was a masterpiece too), and higher quality than some of his other stuff. He still has issues, though some of the tunes are downright jaunty.
14. Summerteeth, by Wilco. I didn't get this album at first. It was my first Wilco album and I didn't know what to expect. I listened to it over and over, though, and it really grew on me. I think it's brilliant.
13. Sheer Heart Attack, by Queen. Ah, Queen, my old friend. I almost put in A Night at the Opera instead of this, but something in me wanted this one. Something for everyone here -- it really is a fantastic album from a fantastic band.
12. Led Zeppelin IV, by Led Zeppelin. There's really nothing I can say about this that hasn't been said. It's great. I like "Going to California."
11. Layla And Other Assorted Love Songs, by Derek and the Dominos. The first time I heard this, my jaw dropped open. This was just unlike anything I had heard. The voice, the guitars (Eric Clapton AND Duane Allman!), the emotion. And, of course, "Layla."
10. The Doors, by The Doors. Jim Morrison's voice gives me shivers. It's so powerful, so loaded with pain. This album is something special -- these guys knew what they were doing.
9. Chaos And Creation In The Backyard, by Paul McCartney. My favorite McCartney album, I think. It's more down-to-earth than some of his others, a little more laid-back. I think the cover is perfect, and pretty much every song on here is a keeper, packed with that McCartney gift for melody.
8. Closing Time, by Tom Waits. And here we have one of the most beautiful albums I've ever heard. This is the stuff to listen to at 3am. I like early Tom Waits more than his later stuff. Just some really beautiful arrangements, and his voice isn't quite as gruff and raspy -- although that's great too, in its own way.
7. Graceland, by Paul Simon. What to say? Paul Simon is something of a genius. The songs on this album are infectious and rousing. A good album for a bus ride.
6. After the Gold Rush, by Neil Young. I discovered this one pretty recently, and it's really shot to the top. It was my first introduction to Neil Young, and what an introduction! It's a gorgeous album. No, his singing isn't perfect, but the sentiment behind his voice is what counts here.
5. The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan, by Bob Dylan. I could have gone with Blood on the Tracks, but I think I like this one a little more today. Besides, "Don't Think Twice" is one of his greatest songs in a career full of great ones. This is anytime music, it's that good.
4. Wildflowers, by Tom Petty. This one has been in my car CD player continuously for weeks now. I love it. I can't get enough. The elegance of his guitar, the relaxed feel, the songs about moving on and getting going. It's damn near perfect.
3. Bridge Over Troubled Water, by Simon & Garfunkel. Well, really, when an album starts off with the jaw-dropper "Bridge over Troubled Water," you know it's going to be good. This one doesn't disappoint. It's all wonderful. And "The Boxer" is a top-notch song.
2. Help!, by The Beatles. My original favorite Beatles album (now it's hard to choose between them), and I still absolutely love it. It's addicting from beginning to end. The Beatles had such charisma, such energy, and they had so much fun with the music, it's hard not to smile along while you listen.
1. Late For The Sky, by Jackson Browne. And this beauty is number one for today. It really is an amazing album. His lyrics are deeply personal and speak right to the heart, and his singing is so smooth and gentle. The songwriting is great and the arrangements are flattering. It's a heavy album, but a hugely rewarding one.
Hmm. I have to say, I'm a little surprised at the way it turned out. Really, the top 10 or so could have been ordered completely differently, just depending on the way I feel. I'm happy with this, though. Maybe in another month or so I'll try this again. -

Fingerstyle Guitar
Mar 26 2008, 14h18 por Alfred04654
Fingerstyle guitar is the technique of playing the guitar by plucking the strings directly with the fingertips, fingernails, or picks attached to fingers, as opposed to flatpicking (picking individual notes with a single plectrum called a flatpick) or strumming all the strings of the instrument in chords.

The Freewheelin' ...
Fev 2 2008, 20h42 por SapientSutler
I've been thinking lately about making alternate versions of Bob Dylan's albums, so here's a stab at the first original album, The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan. All tracks are from my collection.
1. Blowin' In The Wind - Neil Young and Crazy Horse - live
2. Girl From the North Country - Leo Kottke
3. Masters Of War - Eddie Vedder & Mike McCready - live
4. Down the Highway - Bob Dylan - I don't have an alternate here
5. Bob Dylan's Blues - Bob Dylan - I doubt another version exists
6. A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall - Bob Dylan - live 1963 version from No Direction Home: The Bootleg Series Volume 7 (The Soundtrack)
7. Bob Dylan's Dream - Bob Dylan - live version from the Banjo Tapes bootleg
8. Oxford Town - Bob Dylan - no alternate version is known by me
9. Talkin' World War III Blues - Bob Dylan - live 1964 version from The Bootleg Series, Volume 6: Concert at Philharmonic Hall, 1964
10. Corrina, Corrina - Bob Dylan - I'm sure there are dozens of version of this traditional tune by many artists, but I don't have any
11. Honey, Just Allow Me One More Chance - Bob Dylan - again, I come up zero for other versions
12. I Shall Be Free - Bob Dylan - I doubt anyone else would dare to do this so very Dylanesque song
Conclusion: The alternate Freewheelin' is a FAILURE. Not enough covers or live versions of these songs are available. however, I'm going to try a few more albums, because the albums Dylan made the next few years provide an embarrassment of riches in terms of covers upon covers. -

The Fella in Me Quivers
Jul 24 2007, 16h26 por NSimmonds
I've been collecting my thoughts on Mirah and Laura Veirs at the Buskirk-Chumley for about a week, meaning to post something. I think they're collected well enough, now, and no one reads these so I don't have too much to worry about if not.
Going in, I was mildly irritated. My date canceled--car trouble, not her fault--and my friends are too insufferably square to go see a show for free. One, a huge fan of Mirah for years now, passed because she had to do her laundry. Considering that I will walk through fire to watch an artist I love, and will do almost anything on any notice if it's free or cheap, this is somewhat bewildering to me.
But, bitching aside:
As soon as the music started, I didn't care that I was there alone. Delicious, the opening band, was fantastic. Sort of They Might Be Giants by way of OK Go. Excellent music, and danceable enough that I clambered over four people to get out of my row and down by the stage, which position I kept for the rest of the show.
Laura Veirs was, for me, the main attraction, and she was phenomenal. With just her amazing self and an electric acoustic guitar, she filled the entire room with gorgeous sound. Her playing style reminded me a bit of Leo Kottke, in that she could make one guitar sound like about six instruments simultaneously. She also used a track recorder during the show to layer music. It was startling to notice how quiet the room had become when, during one song, someone dropped a bit of change on the floor and the entire building heard it. I got to say hello to Laura afterward, and had her sign a copy of Saltbreakers, but I was so nervous that I could only get a few sentences out before I had to leave, which is strange for me. If you can't tell, I'm fond of Ms. Veirs and her music.
The main event of the evening was the performance by Mirah, accompanied by a keyboardist and drummer whose names I wish I could recall. Mirah tends to write heavy landscapes of sound, so it was surprising to see her perform with such a small group--until they got going. If Laura could fill a room with just her and a guitar, Mirah & Co. spread out of it down the street and knocked a few cars over. The word "rockin'" is not something that one would normally apply to her, but she made the whole audience move. The set was excellent, and she broke in in the middle to sing a few lines from a forthcoming concept album; each song is about an insect, and Mirah had us in the audience guess which insect based on the second verse of each song. I'm the one who got "glowworm", in case anyone there was wondering. I'm so smrt.
All in all, well worth the couple of hours solo drive and the lack of sleep at work the next day. A+. Would go again.
