Got into a mood. Done this before with songs about, for instance, kissing. This time wanted to build a playlist all about fire, burning, flame, etc. (Not a pyro, just happened to have shuffle going and three or four fire songs came along in a row and - uh - sparked my curiosity about how a playlist might look.

It doesn't quite flow the way I want... hoping to make it thematically flow and remain surprisingly eclectic in genre... I think it's kinda getting there.

Late additions were total winners like Tom Waits's Mr. Seigal - with the unforgettable line:

If I can find a book of matches,
I'm goin' to burn this hotel down

I think that's the kind I've most likely got in my collection that I've missed. The lazy way to start was to just search for titles with keywords relating to fire... missing many good candidates, no doubt.

Anyone reading this post is more than welcome to make recommendations of other cool, interesting artists with less than 50,000 and/or 100,000 listeners. The numbers here are those that appeared at the first posting of this journal entry. All the artists/bands on this page are ones that I like...I have noticed that, regarding artists/bands with 'few' listeners (thousands aren't really few, but they're not really world-wide fame like those artists and bands with 500,000+ have), there are patterns: 1) people aren't often interested in investigating artists' solo careers (unless you are Peter Gabriel, Iggy Pop, or Lou Reed), 2) bands that weren't promoted correctly are going to have trouble, 3) artists/bands that are really, really weird aren't accessible to many, so they have trouble getting popular (Björk and The Flaming Lips are excempt from this). I'm going to take this opportunity also to plug my music, Marilyn Roxie, and the music of my friends, John Murphy Music, Mt. Moon, Panda steps in chocolate, Surukei, Streetxlite, and Voidfullness, which is all delightful instrumental stuff. EDIT: I have made additional connection and started alphabetizing (by first name, not last, at the moment), plus added artists formerly grouped with 'few listeners' which have now broken 100,000+! "Post-Punk" is a bullshit label. "Post-Punk" was a term coined by the music press to describe bands that "employed the punk ethic" but actively disassociated themselves from the "punk" scene and aesthetic.

Bands that have been referred to as "post-punk" include British ska outfits such as Madness and The Selecter, avante-garde acts like Virgin Prunes and Lemon Kittens, "goth" stuff like Bauhaus and The Cure and anything that was genuinely hard to categorise, like The Fall.

"Post-punk" doesn't mean anything more than "this is something that came after the '77 Punk Explosion". That's all it means.


Even "goth" can be genuinely described as bullshit these days because bands such as The Doors, who have employed many of the same musical techniques and effects as many early-1980s "Goth" bands are routinely denied, usually by self-proclaimed "Goths" (and, of course, those too old or "not with it" to mave taken notice of the Goth scene), any connections to the "Goth" scene other than being an influence on many early "Goth" bands. This is despite the fact that, if you edited out Jim Morrison's distince vocals from The Soft Parade album, it could very easily pass for Mission UK or Babylonian Tiles demos.

For all intents and purposes, The Doors played a wealth of prototypical Goth music, but all that really makes a band's music "Goth" these days is whether or not "Goths" are in the band or whether or not Goths call it Goth.
