ee ‘Scratch’ Perry - alcunha de Rainford Hugh Perry, nascido em 1936 no vilarejo de Kendal, no interior da Jamaica - começou sua carreira no meio musical trabalhando como faz-tudo no Studio One, sob as ordens do lendário produtor Coxsone Dodd. Em meados da década de 60, ele era um misto de mensageiro, técnico de som, compositor, deejay, segurança e também vocalista, mostrando todo seu ecletismo (foi lá que gravou as faixas reunidas em CHICKEN SCRATCH, cuja capa pode ser vista abaixo). Depois de sete anos de trabalho, brigou com Coxsone por causa dos parcos salários e da falta de reconhecimento e foi trabalhar com Joe Gibbs, que na época ainda não era um produtor, mas tinha muita grana. Perry passou a comandar o selo de Gibbs, conseguindo alguns hits com suas produções, entre elas uma música onde fazia acusações diretas ao seu ex-patrão.
Pouco tempo depois deixou o novo chefe, novamente atirando para todos os lados, dando mostras do seu gênio terrível e da sua forte personalidade. A partir de 1968 passou a trabalhar por conta própria criando seu próprio selo, o Upsetter, e recrutando alguns jovens músicos para formar sua banda de estúdio, os Upsetters. A formação incluia os irmãos Family Man e Carlton Barret no baixo/bateria, o guitarrista Alva Lewis, o tecladista Glen Adams e Max Romeo nos vocais. Na época todos circulavam por Kingston assintindo filmes do estilo ‘western-spaguetti’ no cinema, à tarde, e passando as noites no estúdio, onde, devidamente inspirados, criavam ritmos demolidores.

The 'Curly Dub' track is NOT the original track on the album. Totally different tune. If ya want to check out the real one go to 7digital.com and have a listen to it. It's worth it. 'Come along Jah Jah children, come along now...'

Agree about Ape-ology, really sweet compilation. Another album to check out is the "cloak and Dagger", very good!

Why is this tagged as "Lee "Scratch" Perry & The Upsetters"? Lee Perry is an artist and The Upsetters is a band, they did lots of separate work. (I'm a big fan of both BTW, just curious about this singular "artist".)

The man is a legend though. A man who has worked with so many greats from The Clash to Bob Marley. Beastie Boys to Max Romeo. Pure genius, maybe that's why he starred in a range of Guinness adverts. A huge inspiration on other faves of mine such as The Orb. Blackboard Jungle is an old fave as well as Dubbing psycho thriller with Dub Syndicate. "I'll microwave your record collection!" Mad a s a hatter, but great with it. I saw him at the Reading festival in 1998. The bass was so intense my intestines almosr prolapsed.
