Londres, Inglaterra (1968 – 1980)

Led Zeppelin foi uma banda de Londres, Inglaterra célebre pela sua inovação e influência no rock, além de ter sido a banda mais popular na década de 70. De acordo com o renomado Allmusic, o Led Zeppelin foi a banda de Heavy Metal definitiva. Não apenas por sua interpretação alta e esmagadora do blues — mas também pelo modo como eles incorporam mitologia, misticismo e uma variedade de outros gêneros (world music e folk principalmente britânicos) — em seu som. Eles acabaram por estabelecer o formato dominante para o Heavy Metal, assim como o som real do gênero. Era formada por Jimmy Page (guitarra), John Bonham (bateria), John Paul Jones (baixo, bandolim e teclados) e Robert Plant (vocais, harmônica e gaita). A morte de John Bonham, em 1980, foi a causa do fim da banda. O Led Zeppelin voltou a se reunir em três ocasiões, em 1985 para o show beneficente Live Aid, com Tony Thompson na bateria, no aniversário de 40 anos da gravadora Atlantic; em 1988, com Jason Bonham na bateria; e, mais recentemente, em 10 de dezembro de 2007 em uma homenagem a Ahmet Ertegun, fundador do selo americano Atlantic Records, que apostou em 1968 no potencial dos jovens britânicos que haviam acabado de formar o Led Zeppelin.

Originalmente, a banda foi formada pelo guitarrista Jimmy Page com o nome de “The New Yardbirds” de modo a conseguirem cumprir um contrato feito para a realização de concertos na Escandinávia antes da rotura dos originais Yardbirds.
