"Be sam tweonum, awa to aldre, eow frithes healdan" - "Between the seas, always forever, peace be with you!" On my 29th listen, I've finally awoken from this song's intoxicating slumber enough to realize that these beautiful Old English lines not only open and close the song, but appear again in penultimate form after the bridge/solo, at 3:50 to 4:10, and are echoed by the choir... everything about this song is absolutely wonderful. The music is, I suppose, comparable to some work by Hans Zimmer or James Newton Howard, in that it's mainly a relatively simple progression which attains transcendence through its simplicity.

I've got to post here what Sheila1987 wrote about this song in her review: "It is like a slow, multi-layered, enchanted tale of its own, and it somehow brings an ominous and dark feel to the album without sounding 'gothic' or pretentious in any way; this is the *best* example of the choir enriching the music. The chorus truly gives me chills each time I listen." While I certainly agree about the choir and everything else, I don't really find this song ominous. Given such past songs as Ocean's Way, Temptation, Solemn Sea, etc., I was expecting this to be a pronouncement of doom about the deadly sea, and it's true that the story here is that a woman's love lost his life to the sea.

But it feels like a theme not of doom but of completion, both present and to come, and a promise of healing from the hurts of the past, which, yes, is what the lyrics suggest (see the wiki above), but I mean that the music supports that feeling. For me, if it's ominous, then it's not ominous for something fearfully evil, but for something fearfully good - after all, many of the best things induce fear and trembling when the time comes for us to face them. Random interesting tidbit: the only instance Google finds of "eow frithes healdan" ("peace be with you") is in The Battle of Maldon (line 41). :D

Sometimes, very rarely, a piece of music feels so inherently right that it seems to fill a void that was always there, although I didn't know it. Ghost Love Score, Design Your Universe, and now this. Having heard this song makes me a little bit more complete. :)
