Virtually no complicated chords and the rhythm patterns are a piece of cake once you penetrate the mechanics behind their guitarwork. A novice guitar player with a good sense of rhythm should not take more than a few hours to unravel their songs by ear alone. Solos are 100% pure Holdsworth worship as well, simplified of course. Drumming is a different matter, but you can program those quite easily as they themselves often do. Haake is an excellent drummer though. But that alone does not validate the prefix 'technical' to any godsawful subgenre people tend to attach it to. You want technical? Listen to Martyr.

Eeh, just want to add some more information to what HareMettleAdlib said: "Meshuggah are not actually technical - most of their songs are 4/4 time...." You're partially right and partially wrong about Meshuggah. Totally agree, they play around a 4/4 core, but its the drums (mostly ride or hi-hat) who play in a 4/4 time. The bassdrum(s) usually follow the guitars. And the guitars are playing in a 16 time, and often "odd" (in my opinion, but thats probably because i live in west-europe and i'm used to rhythms like 4/4 or 2/4) time signatures like 5/16, 17/16, 11/16, 13/16 wich eventually fall together with the 4/4 drum beat. Polyrhythmics and syncopation in 2 short words. I'm sorry for the quite technical explanation, but correct is correct ;) PS: if you think Meshuggah is quite simple to execute on guitar, get yer ass over here and we'll start a band better than Meshuggah!

HareMettleAdlib wrote: "MA *is* a joke." True that. Not really a reliable source. "I can live with Meshuggah being called technical metal, though, even though that tag also lies." And I can live with Lamb of God's stupid tags. There's even *gasp* POP and *gaaaasp* Hip-Hop...

MA *is* a joke. Starting with reviews all down to the validity of information. Casual metal fan/hipster? I am confus. I do so wonder what you are basing your laughable accusations on. I really hope it's my charts so that I can call you an underdeveloped middle-aged child. Meshuggah are not actually technical - most of their songs are 4/4 time and are quite simple to execute, guitar-wise. You may as well call Radiohead technical alter-rock, while you're at it. As for the post-thrash and groove association, it's a load of crap. They are actually closer to black metal than to either of those two "sub-genres". Now I expect someone to accuse me of calling Meshuggah black metal because that's the only thing LoG fans will pick up from all this. I can live with Meshuggah being called technical metal, though, even though that tag also lies.

you gotta go to www.iknowmetal.com for all the real facts. wikipedia and M-A is just a bunch of lies, you've all been fooled. 5 Finger Death Punch actually released Scream Bloody Gore. Dimmu Borgir invented metalcore!

@BlindLeader: Ok, so Pantera is most over-hyped? In my opinion it's Metallica. They sell because of their name. Well, of course I dislike them, but I'm also very much familiar with their early material, back in the days when Metallica were a decent band with decent tracks. So, I should prepare for getting stoned to death in a short while because I dared to say something bad about Metallica ;)

Also, anyone with a half an oz. of sense knows that Meshuggah is technical progressive industrial vegan polkacore.

Pantera is among the most over-hyped things to ever happen to metal period. Bands like Machine Head are much worse though, and it has nothing to do with popularity. If I heard a completely unknown band that sound groovy I'd think it was crap regardless. Groove Metal runs its course in seconds, it's that predictable.
