LCD Soundsystem foi o projeto musical do produtor James Murphy, também co-criador do selo de dance punk, o DFA. A sonoridade da banda pode ser descrita como uma mistura de música eletrônica e punk rock, além de alguns elementos de disco music e outros estilos.
A banda ganhou a atenção com seu primeiro single, “Losing My Edge”, de 2001. Mais tarde, Murphy lança um álbum duplo auto-intitulado em Fevereiro de 2005, ganhando aclame da crítica especializada. O disco abre com a música “Daft Punk Is Playing at My House” e se torna hit no mundo inteiro, estabelecendo a banda como uma das principais novidades da música na época.
Ainda no mesmo ano, a banda recebe duas nomeações para o Grammy, uma como melhor música eletrônica e dance music. A banda é eleita por várias revistas como a maior revelação do ano.
No dia 8 de fevereiro de 2011, o LCD Soundsystem anunciou no seu site que fariam o último show da banda no dia 2 de abril, no Madison Square Garden, em New York.
