Nascido em meados da década de 60, na cidade de Jersey, no estado americano de New Jersey, o Kool & The Gang passou por várias fases musicais, desde o mais puro jazz até seguir o R&B e funk. No entanto, foi no auge da disco music que a banda atingiu o estrelato. Tudo começou em 1964, com os irmãos Bell: Robert, até então conhecido como Kool, e Ronald, o Khalis Bayyan. À eles, se uniram mais cinco amigos do ensino médio e o álbum de estreia denominou o grupo como Kool and The Gang. No início, tocavam jazz, até que em 1973, lançaram o disco Wild and Peaceful que trazia os sucessos Jungle Boogie e Hollywood Swinging, que colocou a banda entre as mais populares da época. No ano seguinte veio o album Light of Worlds, já com as influências do R&B e do funk, que se consolidou em em 1975, com o album Spirit Of The Boogie que é ate hoje o disco mais aclamado pela critica e pelos fãs. Em 76, outro grande momento da carreira foi a inclusão da musica Open Sesame na trilha sonora do filme Saturday Night Fever, filme que caracterizou a fase das discotecas em todo o mundo. O vocalista James “JT” Taylor entrou para a banda em 78, quando o Kool and The Gang explodiu no mundo inteiro com a canção Ladies Night e no ano seguinte. Nessa epoca, o grupo sagrou-se grande vendedor de disco com Celebration, até hoje o album mais vendido da carreira da banda, com hits como Celebration e Jones versus Jones. Depois, vieram Get Down On It, Joanna, Misled, Fresh e Cherish. Em 87, Taylor deixa a banda, contribuindo para o declínio e fim do grupo.

These guys were so good - great showmen, even better musicians. Have always loved the instrumental version of "Summer Madness" and I still have a special 12-inch pressing of "Open Sesame."
