I cut the song down to the 2 minute mark...The long instrumental ruins the flow of the album for me, and it's pretty boring. The remastered version sounds like something I might have to check out. 9 minutes doesn't sounds as bad.

First, yes, the 12 minute version is shit. It's not just that it's long - I love GY!BE but their songs aren't boring, tedious, almost-silent wankery. The 9 minute version on the 2009 remix is excellent. That is the perfect length for the song and in never get's boring. Also, why is the length on this page given as 2 minutes?

It's unnecessary. Not painful, but unnecessary, and, since it's so long, I don't think I'll ever listen to the whole thing again. An unmemorable intermission in an otherwise mesmerizing album.

The song has really unique atmosphere. Especially the first part. The second part was really bit too long. I'm glad they decided to edit it to 9 minutes. Now it's perfect.

I really love this track. I find the whole thing incredibly relaxing. I understand how some could consider it to be a bit pretentious and long, but I really think it was done right. It adds to the album in a big way.

There was a really good analysis of the piece that justified the existence of the second part somewhere (regardless of whether or not you particularly like it, its existence is valid). I can't remember where it was, but it was basically saying that all of the instrument 'wank' that happens in the second half is an onomatopoeic response to the lyrics from earlier on (light cymbal hits corresponding to "drifting on the echoes of the hours", etc.). I listened to the instrumental section with that frame of mind and while it still did seem a tad tedious at first, it all started to seem a lot more vital and important with each listen. Now, I find it to be an absolutely essential part of the album, though the lulling vocals in the first part is still by far the best thing about it.

I've always been the type of person to think that if a song is not good on it's own then it's not good at all. You shouldn't say that "this song it good because it's followed by this one or is preceded by this one", you should be able to listen to a song by it's self and think its good. With that said Moonchild is in fact a blemish not a bright spot on Court of the Crimson King.

I've discovered this through Buffalo '66, where Christina Ricci does a little tapdance to this music. Fits so perfectly. But I had to listen to the original to find out about the second part. It's nice too, although I've listened to better experimental improvs.
