  • Best bands ever and full discography downloads (links here!)

    Dez 9 2009, 22h27 por MetallicMadman

Due to the surge of shitty bands being called "metal", "heavy metal", "thrash metal", "death metal", "grindcore", "deathgrind", "brutal death metal" and so on, I have invented a new tag. It's called brutal pop.

Let me be clear: these bands are absolutely terrible and definitely not any form of metal music. Fuck you all.

    First wave brutal pop bands:
    Pantera
    Slipknot
    System of a Down
    Disturbed
    Korn
    Coal Chamber
    Godsmack
    Limp Bizkit
    Linkin Park
    Mudvayne
    Dope
    Static-X
    Mudvayne
    Ill Nino
    Soulfly

  • Yet another 10 death metal albums you need to hear but probably haven't

    Mai 20 2009, 3h53 por baltech22

Fourth in a series of two.
See parts ONE, TWO and THREE

This time, they're in chronological order

    Sempiternal Deathreign[NED] - The Spooky Gloom [1989]

Here's a band every Obituary fan should listen to and realize how foolish they've been to have worshipped that overrated tripe. Sempiternal Deathreign was probably the ORIGINAL death/doom band. This album came out a full two years before Autopsy's Mental Funeral, and one year before Winter's Into Darkness. Basically, it's really raw, ugly doom/death, influenced primarily by the likes of Hellhammer and Black Sabbath, as well as classic Teutonic thrash (Sodom, Kreator). And unlike the aforementioned Obituary, their solos AREN'T the only interesting thing about their music. There are some actually great riffs to be found in here. Songs range anywhere from 1:55 to 10:53, so there's plenty of variety here, as well.

Traumatic Voyage [GER] - Traumatic Voyage [1992]

This is just plain weird shit. I'm not even sure whether this can be classified as death metal, per-sé. There are a lot of progressive and psychedelic elements, the songs are abnormally long [averaging around 8 minutes], and there are occasional clean vocals as well. The closest thing to this that I can recall having heard prior was Timeghoul's demos, but those aren't exactly well-known, nor is a direct comparison fully accurate. You know what? Just check it out for yourself. There's a good chance you'll hate it, but it was definitely one of the more unique early extreme metal bands [use of past tense is misleading, since they're still around... and their more recent albums have gotten even weirder].

Chemical Breath [BEL] - Fatal Exposure [1992]

This one's a bit more mundane, but also has a lot more immediate appeal. Thrashy Belgian death metal, influenced by the likes of Sadus and early Pestilence, with a surprising amount of depth and technical prowess. These guys almost certainly would've been bigger if they'd come from Sweden or the U.S.
    See also: Values [1994]

Ghost [POL] - The Lost of Mercy [1994]

One of the earliest Polish death metal bands, and one of the few that doesn't owe its sound directly to Vader in one way or another. I actually came upon this record while looking through the chronological data on the 'brutal death metal' genre on RYM. This was one of the first dozen or so releases under that tag, and the only one I hadn't heard. Turns out, this doesn't really fit the description [as it's commonly used], since it doesn't sound like NYDM at all. Instead, what we have is a solid slab of European death metal that can most directly be compared to Iniquity's classic Serenadium, with thick, abrasive, and often sludgy riffs, and vocals reminiscent of Grave's Jörgen Sandstrom. More surprisingly, this album actually has stellar production - especially for something so obscure. And if you don't get a chuckle out of the very first riff on the record, you suck at metal.

Agony [CAN] - Apocalyptic Dawning [1994]

Canadian death metal tends to be awesome. This is no exception. It's brutal as shit. Clearly inspired by NYDM in a big way, but also surprisingly melodic. In that sense, it also resembles the aforementioned Serenadium. It's not the most original thing ever, but it's pretty damn solid.

    Morbius [USA] - Alienchrist [1995]

If that title sounds familiar to Arghoslent fans, it should. Drummer Matt Sylvester assumed the title as a pseudonym when he played in said band for several years. There are natural similarities between Morbius and Arghoslent, as well as fellow Virginians Deceased. But the closest parallels can be drawn to early Absu and The Chasm, with whom they share the distinction of being simultaneously raw and epic, with obscure melodies aplenty.
See also: The Shades Below [1992], Sojourns Through The Septiac [2005]

Scenery [CZE] - The Drowning Shadow Of Mankind [1997]

One word: Atheist. This is practically IDENTICAL to what Atheist might have put out between Unquestionable Presence and Elements. A lot of jazziness and unpredictable twists and turns. A few of the songs run a little bit long, and lack the punch that Atheist does, but for anyone wanting to get more from that same sound, you really couldn't do any better.
See also: Philosophy Of Ages [2002], Continuity [2006]

Cauldron Black Ram [AUS] - Skullduggery [2004]

This album sees members of Australian visionaries Portal and Stargazer returning to their roots, playing stripped-down, ugly, primitive death/thrash in the vein of Celtic Frost and Unleashed. Of course, it wouldn't be the same if they didn't let some of the progressive elements from their more well-known bands seep in, so expect some of that, too. Plus... their songs are about pirates, so there's awesomeness all around.

    Mitochondrion [CAN] - Archaeaeon [2008]

This is one of the more intriguing up-and-coming bands in extreme metal. They take the 'war metal' sound native to western Canada, pioneered by Blasphemy and infuse it with a heavy dose of progressive elements. Think of it as Axis of Advance meets Ved Buens Ende, with elements of Lykathea Aflame also included. The down-side is that the production is typical of the war metal sound, with drums and vocals being over-emphasized and guitars frequently buried.

Denial [MEX] - Catacombs Of The Grotesque [2009]

you remember that level in the original Quake, where the big red dude rises out of that pit of lava, and starts throwing hot rocks at you? That's what this album reminds me of. Insanely brutal Finnish-style death metal, played by Mexicans - including former members of Cenotaph and Shub Niggurath. These guys have a convincingly hellish, morbid sound with a sludgy [but well-defined] guitar tone, and manage to pull it off with virtually no palm muting. If you enjoy Convulse and Demilich, you definitely need to check out this record.

Well i made a journal back in 2006 to see how my music taste compared to the mainstream listeners, in that you had to mark down how many listeners each artist had at the time, now looking back on it i find its very interesting to see how they've grown over the years.
so i thought i'd record what each artist has currently so that again i can look back in a year or so and see how they've grown again.
im planning to mark down my top 50, but might take longer then i can be bothered tonight.

  • good lawd that's a lot of verdicts. .

    Abr 26 2009, 14h41 por KMFCM

    . . . yeah
I said, last post, that the days of things leaking and showing up on music blogs en mass were about to come to an end. .

    . . ..and then. . .

    like 20 albums showed up

so many, I doubt I'll be able to remember them all. . .

    i'll try though. . .

Brutal Truth - evolution through revolution
. . .this is streaming somewhere. . .I found out last night and listened to it. . .and then listened to it again. . .and then listened to it again. . .and then listened to it again. . .I don't think I went to bed til 1:00.
I'm not one of these people that think if a band comes back from a breakup and records new shit it's automatically gonna suck. . .but I'll be damned if Brutal Truth didn't just pull the best comeback ever.
For real, between this and For The Love Of (that's an 8.5, by the way), Coalesce better bring it.
I actually like this better than Sounds. . . .and I'm not one of those kids that hates on Sounds (hell, it was one of the first actual grind albums I ever heard). My favorite song is "detached". . . .it's got a riff that reminds me of Gorguts.
20 songs. just the right length to leave you wanting more (to the point where you stay up late and listen to it over and over and over).

    10/10

I didn't think anyone was gonna come CLOSE to topping Antigama. . . .they got a fucking contender now man. . . .shit. . .
Slobberknocker for #1 spot, and it's not even June yet.

. . . .this is gonna be a pretty good year for Relapse I think.
ya know who else this is gonna be a good year for?
    Willowtip

    Ulcerate - everything is fire
yes, the second half of the album is skipping a hell of a lot. . .but I've heard enough of the album to tell you it is a 9/10
New vocalist is damn good. I like his range. Ben was an awesome singer, but I like this guy too. If the Gorguts reunion disappoints at all, we can just listen to this band.

    Mumakil - behold the failure
This bands drummer is trying to singlehandedly take the stigma off gravity blasts. (that is, if Chainsaw to the face's drummer doesn't do it first). Sure, all that blasting can get tiresome. They do throw in some memorable parts amidst all of it though. Moreso than their previous album had, for sure. . . .I wish they would've had more of those crushing slow parts they threw in on that album . . .but this is still a little bit better.

    8/10

Parlamentarisk Sodomi - De Anarkistiske An(n)aler
There is a 10 minute song on this record. I'm going to describe it to you. First, there's an intro. It sounds like Venetian Snares, but with no drums. It's barely even a minute. Then, the song kicks in. It's the same thing you just heard on keyboard now played on guitar with full on blast beat. The rest of the song continues like this. No doom parts, no ambient parts, and there's way more than two riffs (there's a lot of fucking riffs).
yes, a 10 minute fucking grind song. It's not 10 songs stuck together either.
and I'll tell you what, the entire thing is memorable and catchy.

and to top it off, there's 11 other songs. and many of them have SOLOS

and this is just one guy

    in fucking Norway

    10/10/10/10/10/10/10/10/10

I heard the last song on the new Mastodon
so I've heard the whole thing now
    so
    it's official score is 7.5/10

good record for if you have to drive with your parents

    once again

but, I like it a little better than Blood Mountain.

again, Intronaut are everything this band were on Remission (AND MORE!!)
    so check them out immediately

    Agoraphobic Nosebleed - agrapocalypse

(and now the KHR guy will talk about the new album by his main influence, ANb)
I was worried about this one.
    why?
well, history has proven that often when this band do songs longer than a minute, fun is not had. There's a reason Converge stole the show on the split they did back in 1999 (other than. . well. .they're Converge). There's a reason Clockwork Sodom wasn't that good. Other than the latter, I've enjoyed everything they've done in the past year. . . but the fact remains, the things that made them so special on Frozen Corpse and Altered States are gone now. The random samples, the experimental vocal stylings (phonecore!), gabber noise interludes, etc. Done. The first four songs on this, would be fine, if they weren't exactly alike. Probably could've spaced them out, but I guess they wanted to get that filler out of the way before beginning the ascent to greatness that is tracks 5 through 13. The slow and sludgy side of ANb becomes more prevalent as the album progresses, and is truly thier strong point on this outing. Yes, ANb have become another one of those bands who are better when they slow down. Scotts drum programming has become more meticulous than ever. Dude threw in a fucking drum solo. . . .what?!?!?! The drums sound realer than ever. They're eschewing the weirdness that made them influential (except for the lyrics. Mr. Randall's still got it.) to sound like a more regular band with a drummer and everything. ... . . .I mean, that's cool, but, there's already a Pig Destroyer. That said, I'm sure I'll listen to this more than I did Phantom Limb. (I played that to death in a week and a half).

    7.5/10

oh, and the girl. . .Kat. . .yes, she sounds pretty damn good.
(and gets extra props from me for what she said in the Decibel interview. . . . .and you know I don't give girls props. . . .unless thier name is Gianna Michaels)

War From a Harlots Mouth - In Shoals

I'm kind of iffy on this band. They're deathcore, but they throw some interesting stuff in sometimes. Last album, you had a hip-hop instrumental(not jazz), a pretty decent doom song and a breakdown set to an actual machine gun. That was 3 tracks out of whatever many though. This album. . . .welll shit. First of all, kudos on laying off the studio tricks and recording your tracks live. They sound a hell of alot better that way (every band does, c'mon now). The drums sound REAL. They claim to have no used triggers. I beleive it. Certainly helps though that they're moving away from deathcore. They have a lot of parts that sound like The Handshake Murders on this. They'll still blast, but it's when they slow down they get interesting. There's an instrumental on this that's much closer to "jazz" than the hiphop instrumental from last album, but the beat the drummer is playing gives it an Aphex Twin/drum and bass sort of feel. . . .and to add to it, glitch effects. It's like that one song from Ire Works. I dig it. This album reminds me of what both Nights Like These and Elysia have done in trying to advance their sounds above trendy deathcore shit. I'd say thier success in doing so is somewhere between those two. I'll listen to it a hell of a lot more than I did Lion of Judas, but NLT still did it the best (because they completely left it behind). Good show.

    7.5/10

    Paria - the barnacle codius

not sure what to make of this. One really funny thing though, the instrumental "pish-posh" has a total visual kei (think DAS:VASSER) riff. This record is way less noisy than the last one. More melodic, and they've gone kind of "prog" with it too. There aren't many songs under 4 minutes. One song has clean singing, straight out of. . . .I don't know. Someone said it sounded like Cheap Trick. I kinda see it, actually. It's not bad either. I'm probably gonna need a couple more listens, but it's not holding my attention as much as the first album did.

    7/10

Graf Orlock - destination time today
you know Graf Orlock. They're like Killwhitneydead, except Graf Orlock are still good after 3 records :) I really wouldn't call them grind, because they sound like Maharahj. There's no big climactic closer like the Jurassic Park ending (my buddy Matt is gonna be so pissed when I tell him they did that. He wanted to do that.), but they do play the theme from Conan in one of the songs.

    8/10

Fukpig - spewings from a selfish nation
this is the most pissed off thing I've heard since the last Splitter record. It's got bass like a motherfucker. I've thought for years that somebody should apply Tones On Tail's bass tone to metal, and someone finally did it. This is crust punk played by black metal people. . .specifically Anaal Nathrakh members. I'm not too fond of CURRENT Anaal Nathrakh. . .but I fucking love this. Your average crust punk fan might be a little turned off by the production. It has modern black metal production(only the first song sounds like it has keyboards though). . .with way more bass. Seriously, the last song (which is pretty much what I'm talking about when I say this is the most pissed off band since Splitter) has a part with just the bass and the drums. When you hear this, you realize that 80% of the distortion you're hearing is the bass. I'm surprised that's not Shane Embury. It is coming out on his label. They're only pressing like 500 cds or something (I heard nothing about a vinyl release), so either grab this now or you're gonna HAVE to download it.

    9.5/10

    . . . . .I heard so much shit, I can't keep track of all the this I heard.
March/early April ended up being a pretty insane month for leaks, so, yeah.
    See you on the flipside.
