2008 was a great year in music. Unlike 2007’s very thin set of offerings, 2008 featured dozens of great albums. I’m making this a top 20 list, because honestly the difference between #6 and #20 is almost nil, all of which would have cracked last year’s top 10. Even so, there wasn’t an album that grabbed me as much as Keepin 6 last year; No Trigger, The World/Inferno Friendship Society, Mika Miko, or Off With Their Heads in 2006; or The Epoxies or Sleater-Kinney in 2005.

    1. Blacklisted – Heavier than Heaven, Lonelier than G-d

A gripping, heavy hardcore classic. Absolutely, devastatingly brutal. The album ends with the best two songs on it—TocarCanonized and TocarWish. Most albums nowadays don’t have enough good songs to finish this strongly.

    2. The Fad – Kill Punk Rock Stars
Gets #2 instead of #1 because it’s not quite as consistent as Heavier than Heaven. But it has some of the catchiest songs of the year. It’s a horrible shame that they broke up so soon after their breakout album.

    3. Paint It Black - New Lexicon

Actually quite similar to the Blacklisted album in a lot of ways. It’s not as catchy as Paradise, but it’s incredibly heavy. Gravity Wins stands out as brilliant. These guys are now probably the most consistently awesome force in hardcore.

    4. Circus Contraption – Half-Wit’s Decent

Now here’s something different. This is actually circus music. No joke. And it’s incredible. This is their fourth release, but the first to be good all the way through. They’d always been great at starting albums, but they’ve finally learned to close it. There’s one actually bad song on the album, and it’s overall still not as consistent as the top 3, but the great songs are really a perfect sample of something different.

    5. Off With Their Heads – From The Bottom
This is a grower. The first ten or fifteen times through I liked it, but it didn’t really stick. It wasn’t until I came back to it about a month later that I realized the genius. It might not live up to Hospitals, which might be one of the top ten albums of the decade, but it’s every bit as powerful. And every bit as depressing lyrically.

    6. The Faint – Fasciination
This is the most inconsistent album on the list. Fulcrum And Lever might be the song of the year, and it’s somewhat of a minimalist departure from their other stuff. The Geeks Were Right and Machine in the Ghost are also excellent, but about half of the other songs on the album are honestly skipable. The good songs are so good, though, that I wound up listening to this album many dozens of times.

    7. Less Than Jake – GNV/FLA

I had honestly written them off after two consecutive bad albums (excluding the decent B-Sides collection they put out in between). But this was really a great comeback for them. It has strong influences from their early work, sorely lacking recently, but it doesn’t try to copy what came before. It’s definitely got a refreshing style. Fun all the way through.

    8. Have Heart – Songs to Scream at the Sun

I think you might be noticing a theme, but this is another brutal, heavy hardcore album. Hardcore is going through an amazing time, where the metal influence of the last 10 years is fading back in favor of a darker, deeper sound. Have Heart specializes in the heaviest vocals around, Dan Yemin included.

    9. Black President – Black President

Despite that this was their debut, their name came before Obama’s candidacy. This was honestly the album I anticipated most this year, and it didn’t disappoint. It’s straight up punk rock, no holding back. Fast, furious, and catchy.

    10. Tri-State Conspiracy – Nuisance

This is actually the second album in the top 10 that was given out for free at the release show (Paint It Black being the first). I tried to stay objective in my rankings, but it’s hard not to have a good first impression when you’re hearing the songs live at a great show and then pop in the free disc immediately thereafter. This is the first pure ska (minus the punk) album to crack my top 10 in a number of years, but it’s well deserved.

    11. Verse – Aggression
This album is actually quite different from the prior three hardcore albums. It’s faster and far less heavy. As the title implies it’s more pure aggression than impending doom.

    12. The Copyrights – Learn The Hard Way

It’s hard to put out three full lengths in three years, much less have any of them be good. But for them all to be good is bordering on absurd. And yet The Copyrights have done just that. While Learn the Hard Way might not be quite as good as last year’s Make Sound, it is nonetheless an excellent, catchy piece of pop-punk goodness. TocarSwitchblades alone is worth playing on repeat for about two hours.

    13. The Gaslight Anthem – The ’59 Sound

Ok, fine. It’s good. Or at least fucking catchy as hell. I can’t even tell anymore. Shut up.

    14. The Loved Ones – Build And Burn

It wasn’t too long ago that I was really worried whether The Loved Ones would stay on the right side of the punk/emo divide, given that their EP toed much closer to the line than their brilliant demo. Flash forward to 2008, and they’re one of the most reliable forces in straightforward punk rock. Another great album that’ll give you a few dozen spins.

    15. LaGrecia – On Parallels
This is another incredibly inconsistent album. TocarTwo Shotguns and You Like Baseball, I Like Ghosts are two of the best songs of the year, but a couple of the songs are pretty bland and boring. Jason is best when he is playing fast and hard. This isn’t Kid Dynamite snobbery, but rather my pointing out that File Under Black is actually the best None More Black album.

    16. The Max Levine Ensemble – OK Smartypants

Another great pop punk album. Very catchy and fun… not to mention spastic. “Now tell me, okay smartypants, what do you do when you get bored? What do you do with your boredom?” Could listen to that all day.

    17. Dillinger Four – C I V I L W A R

This might be an anti-grower. When I first got this album, I listened to it about 40 straight times, no joke. But now Gainesville is the only song I really want to hear. In any case, you can’t argue that this wasn’t a great return from a great punk band.

    18. Cruel Hand – Prying Eyes

Yet another crushingly brutal hardcore album from Bridge 9 Records. Just as heavy and brutal as any of the albums in the top 10, it only loses out because it’s not as catchy. The opening and closing tracks stand out most, which is always nice.

    19. H2O – Nothing To Prove

Quite contrary to the title of the album, H2O had quite a lot to prove with this album. While their live show is unquestionable, their last album (a major label debut!), 2000’s GO, was not well-received—for good reason. And that was 8 years ago. But H2O is back. Though they’re not nearly as hard as they once were, their sound is reminiscent of older Bouncing Souls. Can’t really quibble with that.

    20. Virgins – Miscarriage

Did you like New Mexican Disaster Squad? You’ll like this—it’s got “members of.” I’m shocked this hasn’t gotten more play in the Orgcore scene.

There were also some great EPs and singles released this year. I am making a top 8 list, because I never got my hands on the Roxy Epoxy split or the Lidia Stone EP, and I assume they would have made a top 10. Roxy’s split is Europe-only for some reason, and Lidia Stone sold out of their EP in no time. Ah well.

    1. EVERYBODY OUT! – Struggle & Strife

This is kind of unfortunate, actually. They followed up their self-titled EP, probably the second best EP of last year, with easily the best EP of the year. Unfortunately, two great EPs in a row made their debut, self-titled full-length somewhat redundant. The full length wasn’t bad at all, but it hasn’t been getting many spins after my heavily listening to the two terrific EPs.

    2. Nanuchka – Mediterranean

Last year, Nanuchka released the great Mediterranean single. This year, they followed it up with an EP featuring that song and other slowish tunes. They’d been playing the songs for a while, but they are lovely, and it’s nice finally to have them on an album.

    3. The Steinways – Unoriginal Recipe
Another band whose EP overshadowed the full length. Unfortunately, Gorilla Marketing was far more disappointing in its own right. Unoriginal Recipe, though, did not disappoint in the least, providing six of their classic, catchy tunes.

    4. Dead to Me – Little Brother

Not quite up to the hype, but it’s still a really fun EP. I don’t know what possessed them to make a reggae song, but the track TocarLittle Brother’s really not too bad, even if it’s not the song of the year that many claim.

    5. Iron Chic – Demo

From the ashes of Latterman rises quite a promising, new project. I’m expecting great things.

    6. Trapped Under Ice – Stay Cold
    More hardcore! Woooo!

    7. Bomb the Music Industry!/Mustard Plug – Under The Influence 7”

Wouldn't be a year end list without Bomb the Music Industry!, now would it? This is an interesting one. Bomb The Music Industry! is a phenomenal band, but they consistently cover terrible songs, with expectedly merely adequate results. This is no exception. Mustard Plug’s cover of Fugazi’s Waiting Room is really interesting, and I’m not sure if it’s genius or annoying. In many ways it’s quite faithful… but then the horns come in… I think you just have to listen for yourself.

    8. Killradio – Good Americans
Hmmmm…. The first track, TocarRebel, is genius. Straight up. The title track, up next, is good. Then there are a couple more mediocre new songs. And then the EP closes up with some awful acoustic versions of some of the less impressive songs off their last album. Not a good way to close it out, boys. It had been a number of years since Raised On Whipped Cream, an album with its own, long horror story. But overall it was a great album, similarly with two brilliant songs opening it up. This EP certainly did not meet my expectations in a follow-up, but the ability to write a song like Rebel gives me hope that they haven’t lost it.

2009 looks to be just as good as 2008. In roughly chronological order, expect:

Major General (Franz Nicolay’s band), Matt and Kim (I hear this album is awesome), Bomb the Music Industry! (just finished it up), Propagandhi, Shinobu, Roxy Epoxy (finally a full-length), Strike Anywhere, The Aquabats (yessssssss), Strung Out, Cheeky, So Many Dynamos, The Thermals, Screaming Females, and maybe Mustard Plug, Rancid, the Shook Ones, The Slackers, and the World/Inferno Friendship Society. This is to say nothing of Bomb The Music Industry!’s many planned EPs, The Bouncing Souls’ complicated release plans (a song a month, collected into four 7”s of three songs each), and other EPs from The Loved Ones, Bigwig, Classics of Love (Jesse Michaels' new band!), and the Mad Caddies.

  • I AM GOING TO MAKE A JOURNAL LISTING BANDS I HAVE SEEN

    Jun 28 2008, 8h31 por McGerkey

So I can remember because I keep forgetting!

More or less in chronological order.

    1. REO Speedwagon - Played with Styx. They were lame.
    2. Styx - Like my first favorite band ever. This was around like 2000-2001 or some shit. It was awesome.
    3. Killradio - Shit sucked
    4. Mindless Self Indulgence - April 2005, a couple days before they released YRTA. They were fucking great, but I was really disappointed in the album.
    5. George Thorogood - Enjoyable even though I think blues rock shit is generally pretty lame.
    6. John Fogerty - Of course this ruled, it's the fucking guy from CCR.
    7. John Mellencamp - Kicked ass. Fogerty came on and they played "Green River" and "Rain of the Scarecrow" together. I think it might have been 2006.
    8. Jimmy Buffett - I wish this dude would start singing his songs again and not, you know, just kind of speak them.
    9. Barenaked Ladies - November 2006, I was like a mile away from the stage and the lady in front of me had huge hair like a jerk, but goddamn was it awesome.
    10. Motley Crüe - They kind of suck.
    11. Aerosmith - They were awesome.
    12. Rise Against - Holy shit this band was terrible.
    13. My Chemical Romance - I have no idea how they sounded because all 9889898989 of the preteen girls in the audience were shouting the words to all the song and it was somewhat deafening.
    14. Pete Kilpatrick Band - Pretty nice folk-rock. Did a sweet cover of Nate Dogg and Warren G's "Regulate."
    15. Yukon Kornelius - Members of Barenaked Ladies, Dave Matthews Band and Guster playing a show consisting mostly of classic rock covers. Also Dee Snider showed up and sang "We're Not Gonna Take It" and "Highway To Hell". Shit was tite.
    16. Frightened Rabbit - They were alright, I guess. Sound dude at the Middle East Downstairs is a retard though because all I heard was bass.
    17. Bodies of Water - They were awesome but of course the sound dude fucks it up again and the whole thing ended up being retardedly bassey. Still ruled though.
    18. Clouds - They opened for Piebald. Pretty plain rock stuff. Kind of sucked. Were funny as hell though.
    19. Piebald - Their second to last show ever. Probably the best show I've been to ever. The band was awesome, the crowd was awesome, etc., etc.
    20. Tom Tom Club - Kind of weird in a good way. Chick vocals mostly, but they had the Jamaican dude do lead vocals on a song called "She's Dangerous" or some shit, and it was awesome.
    21. Devo - DEVODEVODEVODEVODEVODEVODEVOMOTHERFUCKINGDEVO
    22. Bowerbirds - I always thought this band was kind of boring, but holy shit were they good live. They should all sing together more because they can all fucking sing. Srsly.
    23. Bon Iver - Ruled, obviously. Played two new songs. One was awesome, one was twinkly Radiohead-sounding faggotry. Dude came out and played Staxxxx solo for the encore. Shit was iNtEnSe.
    24. Emeen Z - Pretty good. Sounded kind of like the Apples In Stereo.
    25. Port O'Brien - Also pretty good.
    26. Bodies of Water (again) - GONSMOGMSLFKMSK. Basically >>> Devo and Piebald combined. Sound was awesome this time.
    27. Crinkles - They were pretty alright. Had a bunch of weird effects and drum machines and shit.
    28. Mount Eerie - Just solo Phil Elvrum. It was kind of amazing. Dude played without any mics or anything because they weren't working very well.
    29. Gang Gang Dance - Holy shit this band is terrible. Like a straight 40 minutes of some dude playing drums with some chick singing some Egyptian sounding shit and some other dude fucking with these gay whooshy synths. Also there was a guitarist. Painfully repetitive.
    30. of Montreal - I came. Buckets.
    31. Loch Lomond - They were very good. Dude singing should stop with the falsetto and sounding like Joanna Newsom thing though.
    32. The Decemberists - They are so good live guys srsly.
    33. Fall On Your Sword - They were pretty alright. Synth-rock, I guess. Reminds me of Devo kind of.
    34. Local H - They sounded like a second-hand Nirvana at their best. But they did sound really good live, for just being two people (drummer and the singer/guitarist has like, a bass pickup thing on his guitar). They played for about a half hour too long.
    35. Electric Six- My cum buckets came buckets. Pretty much amazing.
    36. The Tallest Man on Earth - Sounded pretty much the same as on record. That being awesome, by the way.
    37. Bon Iver (again) - They were actually better than the first time I saw them. I wish my seat was better though. Still awesome anyway.
    38. Fire Zuave - Awesome
    39. Sugar & Gold - Pretty nice. Reminded me a lot of the Tom Tom Club.
    40. of Montreal (again) - diNGUDSOGNOJ AWESOME
    41. Living Things - Pretty boring.
    42. Bang Camaro - Hahahaha. Ridiculous brotastic shit. I approve.
    43. Electric Six (again) - See above Electric Six show description ^
    44. Dave Godowsky - Dude was pretty good.
    45. Bon Iver (again) - I think this might have been my favorite time seeing them.
    46. Robyn Hitchcock & the Venus 3 - These dudes were pretty good.
    47. The Decemberists (again) - HoL plus an amazing second set list. Fucking pefect except the exclusion of "Tiny Dancer" which would have made the night for me.
    48. Willie Nelson - Pretty damn good. Not the most impressive music ever, but it's Willie Fucking Nelson. Who cares?
    49. John Mellencamp (again) - Shit was awesome, though a bit short. Got to hear the "classics" plus some stuff from last year's album (which I loved) and a new song that is going to be on his new album, which was great.
    50. Bob Dylan - Hahahahahaha. Really, REALLY bad. Sounded like he was scatting or clearing his throat THE WHOLE TIME. Walked out halfway through the third song.
    51. Fart Powder- Cool guy laptop music. Had some awesome shit.
    52. Bubblegum Octopus - A++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
    53. Laura Veirs and the Hall of Flames - Pretty awesome, actually.
    54. The Decemberists (again) - Apparently Becky Stark missed her flight like a fuckin jerk so they couldn't do the Hazards of Love, but instead they played 2 full sets of random shit. It was awesome. Bunch of songs I hadn't seen live before. Also, first time I had seen them where I could actually, you know, see them!
    55. Millions of Brazilians - Pretty good. No bass dude and the guitar dude did some cool shit with his pedals.
    56. The Gay Blades - They were alright.
    57. Electric Six (again) - Fuck yes.

Okay I think that's all I'll probably update it later as I see more!

  • ☺ ☺ ☺ Evanescence and Nightwish are Plagiarists ☺ ☺ ☺

    Abr 30 2008, 9h32 por Fulvian

Odes of Ecstasy - Embossed Dream in Four Acts (June 1998)

(You can buy this album here)

Evanescence - Evanescence EP (December 1998)

(This EP is legally free and downloadable here)

    Nightwish - Once (June 2004)

(Do I need to tell You where to get this?)

Well those similar album arts shouldn't be a coincidence, there must be something in common between them, all I can tell is the presence of female vocalists on all those 3 albums, but there should be more...
but more importantly, what the heck is so special in that sleeping angel cover art to be worth plagiarizing?

Opinions are welcome but I would really appreciate some facts.

  • ☆ ☆ ☆ How to Get Your Weekly Chart Earlier ☆ ☆ ☆

    Mar 9 2008, 21h35 por Fulvian

We know that last week was quite a pain because our charts came very late, and I saw quite a lot of people whining about not being able to get their weekly chart on Monday in forums, groups, even complaining to LAST.HQ.

I, myself, quite curious why should the chart be very late as actually the chart data themselves are (always) already available in Audioscrobbler web services on Sunday.

So actually we can get our weekly charts earlier, although it's just raw XML data, but more than enough for a spoiler LOL I know some smart people already know this trick, basically it's this link:

    http://ws.audioscrobbler.com/1.0/user/Fulvian/weeklyartistchart.xml?from=1204459200&to=1205064000

The above link is to get my weekly chart for the week ending on 9 March 2008 (which is, at the time I'm writing this, still unavailable on my page)

    How to get Yours

First, just copy the link above and paste it in Your browser address field, replace the text "Fulvian" with Your username, that's it. Note that it's only for this week chart, for future weekly charts, read on...

The link above has 2 parameters, the first one is 1204459200 ("from" parameter) it's the start of the week (Sunday, 12:00 midday in UTC/GMT) in UNIX time format

The second parameter is 1205064000 ("to" parameter), it's the end of the week which is also the start of the next week (also Sunday, 12:00 midday in UTC/GMT) in UNIX time format

What the hell is UNIX time format?

It's basically the time in seconds that has elapsed since January 1, 1970 midnight. There's an online tool to convert time and date to UNIX time and vice versa, it's here

    How about the next week?

The full 24x7 week is 604800 seconds long, so to get Your weekly chart on next Sunday, just move the value that was previously in "to" parameter (let's say 1205064000) to the "from" parameter, and add 604800 to that value (1205064000 + 604800 = 1205668800) and place it in the "from" parameter, so the link for next week chart spoiler:

    http://ws.audioscrobbler.com/1.0/user/Fulvian/weeklyartistchart.xml?from=1205064000&to=1205668800

Just do the same for subsequent weeks, every week adds 604800 seconds,

Any question just feel free to ask and stop whining about charts coming late, no system is flawless!!

  • Band Reccomendations (Updated January 15th 08) Working Links!

    Jan 18 2008, 4h49 por Unknownfear

Instructions: The following is a list of the bands of the genre's i like. (Not nessesarily what i like) All have myspaces. Under each band, will be a list of the top 2-7 bands that I know you will like if you like the band named. I don't recomend Slipknot, System Of a Down, Avenged Sevonfold Godsmack or Sevendust. But they will be included anyway. This is still a concept but, I trust this will work pretty well. Feel free to make suggestions and add bands!
    Example:
    Band a -- Genre
    My Top 5: Band c, Band d, band g, band 8. Band q
To Navigate to the band you want, use "Control + F" the find comand and type in the band you want. If they are alternative or metal i'll probably have em listed.

    1-9:
    3 Doors Down– Alternative Rock
The Best Wanna-be-metal band Ever. Now when I refer to 3 doors down, im not talking about Here without you and When im gone. I'm talking about their good shit, the stuff you don't know about and you think you do. These guys are actually really damn good. They have a lot of metal influences and their songs can be pretty gothic such as seen in Changes and This time. Were thinking of the Same 3 doors down here. Believe me. Listen to their Album Away from the sunset. So good yo.
My Top 5: 12 Stones, Stone Sour, Spiralarms, Puddle Of Mudd, Alter Bridge

    3rd Strike – Alternative Rock/Metal/Metal Rap
Heard of these guys a few years ago. Typical Metal rap band, except they have great quality to their music and an excilent lead vocalist. They do a lot of Pantera Covers, and have some really great classic style metal rifts in their songs. They are pretty hip. Listen to their song "No Light"
My Top 5: Evans Blue, Nonpoint, A perfect circle, Machine Head, Ill Nino

    40 Below Summer & Black Market Hero – Metal/Industrial
40 Below Summer, Now Black Market Hero is the Origonal Breaking Benjamin. These guys mastered the sound way before Benjamin came out with their first album. 40 below summer however isn't nearly the sell out mainstream band that BB is. These guys are true metalheads. Now let me tell you, the lead singer CAN scream, But he chooses not to. Instead he's developed his own sort of … how would you define it, Yell/speak/scream singing style. Its really unique. These guys have great alternative songs with a lot of darker industrial influences. These guys are So great. Listen to their song "Monday Song" and if you like heavier stuff, listen to "We The People"
My Top 5: Breaking Benjamin, Dry Kill Logic, Element Eighty, Endo Scars of Life, Godhead

    A:
    A Perfect Circle – Alternative/Punk Rock/Industrial
With Tool's lead singer, these guys were almost guaranteed to be a success… and they were. Their Song "The outsider" has to be one of the most original and amazing songs of the century. It combines tool with modern alternative and punk to create pure genius. Of the two bands, I prefer A perfect circle because of their shorter songs. These guys are kickass, although their other songs are a lot different than the outsider. These guys are definitely mainstream. They are some whacky guys.
My Top 5: Evans Blue, Waking, Tool, 3rd Strike, Slant, Vertical Horizon

    Adema – Nu-metal/Industrial rock/Hard rock
Adema was my first true favorite band. These guys got me into all the music I listen to today and without them I wouldn't even be a songwriter. These guys are so unique… now everyone sounds like them but man, when they first came out… wow. There wasn't one bad song on their album. These guys will last forever. Very dark and depressing sound I must say. A little like Korn but more so like Spineshank. Last year the lead singer left the band and join a new band called Midnight Logic. They are pretty good but a little to mainstream for my likings. Fear not though. Adema is still around and their new lead singer is also excellent. The band has taken a new direction and have lost their dark and gothic sound. But in many ways this is good. Original Adema, although excellent had very uncolorful songs. You could only listen to them a certain number of times before you felt dehydrated. New Adema is an Alternative band with industrial influences. The instrumentation is different, the quality is different, but they still in some ways sound like adema. They are great. Both old and New. Adema Forever.
My Top 5: Bittersweet, Spineshank, Dry Cell, Orgy, Scars of Life, Blindside, Taproot

Agonised by Love -- Gothic Electronica/Techno
I don't know anything about these guys. Only have one song by em, "Silent War"
My Top 5: Colony 5, Pride & Fall, Bella Morte, Razed In Black, Covenant

Alice in Chains – Post Grunge/Alternative
If you don't know who Alice In Chains is, you're a fucking tard. These guys, along with STP and SoundGarden and Nirvana invented modern Alternative and metal music. Alice in chains is a freaking legend. They've got over a hundred songs and in my opinion are far better than nirvana or STP. Their lead singer is one of a kind. He's got a extremely nasel droning voice. But it works. It fits perfectly for their very grungy alternative sound. He uses his voice as an instrument to go along with the guitar in many of his songs giving Alice In chains a mild eastern feel.
My Top 5: Soundgarden, Porcupine Tree, Speak No Evil, Dust To Dust, STP

    Allele – Alternative/Rock
Unoriginal… Breaking benjamin rip off. So obviously… they are good to. Only have one song by them which is excellent, its called "Lost In your words" It… really REALLY sounds like Breaking Benjamin.
My Top 5: Depswa, Submersed, Breaking Benjamin, Faktion, Ziel, Dredg, Slant, Egypt central, 40 below summer

    Audiovent -- Alternative/Rock
I don't know anything about these guys. Only have one song by them, "The Energy" So I'll speak about the one song instead. The energy has got to be one of the best alternative songs of the century. Its So godamn incredible. And whether you like Pop, punk, opera, metal or death metal, you'll like it. Go get it. Now.
My Top 5: Foo Fighters, Velvet Revolver, Our Lady Peace, Blindside, Irrational, Saliva

    Audioslave - Alternative/Hard Rock
Chris Cornell, Singer of legendary innovative Post-Grunge band Soundgarden has recently returned to form Audioslave, a band with an amazing vocalist, and terrible songs. They are a one hit wonder, with "Like a Stone" yet somehow managed to put out a second album. Don't ask me how. But if you're an avid fan of Soundgarden or any of the classic 90's bands… buy Like a Stone right away. The song is so original and has so many influences from the great 90's legends. Its really, an amazing amazing song.
My Top 5: Soundgarden, Shinedown, Alice In Chains, Puddle Of Mudd, STP

    Ambulette – Gothic/Pianist
I found Ambulette when I went to a Dredg concert with my pal Coady. They were the opening band. The band is run by the former singer of Denali, a beautiful girl with an amazing voice. At the concert, something sounded very off. Her singing was completely off key. She didn't hit one right note. However… I also noticed that it wasn't possible to be this off on all your own songs an soon discovered that her songs were just… off… Its so freaking awesome, this girl is so gothic. Their songs have a lot of Lacuna Coil style melodies presented in a very light pianist way. They are cool. And Man… Their lead singer is SO Hot. SO hot x.x Listening to their album, it sounded a lot less off-key by the way. Dunno what the hell the problem was, probably the acoustics at the concert. I knew it wasn't possible to be so terribly off. She was so off she was on… Don't ask.
My Top 5: Tori Amos, Darling Violetta, Imogen Heap, Denali, Flyleaf, Jem

    American Head Charge - Nu-Metal/Metal
My Top 8: Twisted method, Primer 55, Twin Method, Erase The Grey, Five Finger Death Punch, Demon Hunter, Nothingface, Dry Kill Logic.

    And One – Industrial/EBM
This is a German Industrial Band. Also, one of the most popular Industrial bands in all of Germany. They have a discography practically as large as Alice in chains. Their lead singer has a really deep voice, and the coolest accent ever. He speaks really good English. For all you ladies out there, his voice is quite sexy. Lol. Their music has a lot of gothic undertones and occasionally some undead-circus-music in it. I love these guys. They are really cool. Up there with Colony 5 on my all time favorite Techno bands ever.
My Top 5: Agonized by Love, Colony 5, Shiny Toy Guns, Bella Morte, The Bravery

    A.R Rahman – World/Classical
Rahman is the artist that composes all the big hits in bollywood as well as many asian films. You've probably heard his scoring before. His music is ethnic and very oriental with lots of unique instruments and beautiful sounds. He does a lot of Collaberation word with Hindu singers creating a very "Desert Rose" effect. This guy is freaking awesome. I personally am in love with eastern music, and this guy brings the best of the best. He's really cool to, he does a lot of work with Alternative bands like Kalpana. My personal favorite song by Rahman is called…"Oohhaah" isn't that the funniest name? Its… an amazing song. Check it out right away.
My Top 2: Kalpana, Mahathi, Sting

Avenged Sevenfold – Speed Metal/ Metal/ Punk rock
Avenged Sevenfold successfully bridges two genres together that for the past decade have been trying to come together. Those Genre's are Classic Punk and Classic Metal. The result is a fast paced death metal sounding punk. These guys are very similar to Thrice which attempted to do this merger before Sevenfold. Personally, I am a fan of thrice as they are less punk, but anyone who listens to punk and wants to start listening to metal, this is the first band you should check out.
My Top 5: Thrice, Dear Damien, Element Eighty, The Birthday Massacre

    Ayria - Industrial
My Tops: Nocturne, Chiasm, Freezepop, I:Scintilla

    B:
    B.C. – Progressive Alternative Rock
B.C cannot be defined as progressive and alternative, but only a combination of the two. Their songs, starting off with Soft and ambient vocals steadily build up into a modern heavy alternative chorus. This allows for their music to be broader and potentially more melodic.
My Top 5: Porcupine Tree, Live, Soundgarden, Speak No Evil, Sloth, Breaking Point

    Billy Corgan – Electronica/ Techno/ Ambient
Ex Smashing Pumpkin Vocalist branches out with his own band many years after the breakup of the pumpkins. He decides to take his new solo project a more techno root. Keeping the mainstream choruses of the pumpkins the new Billy Corgan is a great addition to the techno genre scoring many singles so early in the bands career. His songs are repetitive and catchy, just the way electronica should be.
My Top 5: Smashing Pumpkins, Bella Morte, Razed In Black, Thom Yorke, Utada Hikaru , Godhead

Blackfield – Progressive Rock/ Soft Rock
My top 3: Porcupine Tree, Radiohead, Live, Cities, Sanctus Real

Black Label Society – Speed Metal/Metal
My Top 5: Soil, Systematic, Spiralarms, Black Stone Cherry, Seemless

    Bon Jovi – 90's Rock/Alternative
My top 3: Foo Fighters, 3 doors Down, Audiovent

    Blindside – Christian Rock/Industrial
My top 5: Smile Empty Soul, Deftones, Earshot, Dry Cell, Scars of Life, Thrice

    Breaking Benjamin – Alternative/Rock
My Top 5: 40 Below Summer, Allele, Depswa, Submersed, Sinch, Cold, Dredg, Soil

    Breaking Point – Alternative/Metal
My Top 5: Seether, Thornley, Sloth, Slant, Shinedown, Manmade God, Soil, Union Underground, Nickelback, Mushroomhead

    Bubblemth – Video Game/Metal/Jazz
Nobody sounds like these guys…. Check em out.

    C:
    Chevelle -- Alternative
My Top 5: Slant, Evans Blue, Taproot, Disturbed, Earshot, Cold, Deftones,

    Celldweller – Industrial/Metal
My Top 5: Utada Hikaru, Blindside, And One, Orgy, Razed In Black

    Chiasm – Industrial/Gothic/Ambient
My Top 2: Daniel Ash, Celldweller

    Cities - Soft Rock/Alternative Rock/Indie
My Top 5: Sanctus Real, Disciple, Submersed, Depswa, Adema

    Colony 5 – Electronica/Techno
My Top 5: And One, Agonized By Love, Covenant, Pride & Fall, Shiny Toy Guns

    Cold -- Alternative/Metal/Rock
My Top 5: Shinedown, Sinch, Breaking Benjamin, Evans Blue, Sloth, Ra, Dredg

    Creed – Christian Rock/Alternative
My top 5: Disciple, P.O.D, Puddle Of Mudd, Smile Empty Soul, Shinedown, Decypher Down

    Crossbreed - Industrial Metal
My Tops: Dry Kill Logic, the Kovenant, Twin Method, the Accident Experiment, pitiful daycare.

    Crossfade – Alternative/Mainstream Rock
My Top 5: Nonpoint, Blindside, Chevelle, Breaking Benjamin, Allele, Depswa, Seemless

    D:
    Darling Violetta – Gothic
My Top 5: Ambulette, Denali, Chiasm, Tori Amos, Imogen Heap

    Darwin's Waiting Room - Alternative Rock/Rapcore
My top 5: Reveille, Linkin Park, Smile Empty soul, Blindside, Papa Roach, Limp Bizkit

    Dear Damien – Industrial/Metal/Acid Punk
My Top 5: KillRadio, Mindless Self indulgence, Marylin Manson, Godhead, A Perfect Circle, Blindside.

    Deepfield - Alternative Rock
My top 5: Velvet Revolver, Seemless, Alter Bridge, F.L.O.W, Fingertight, Lennex

    Default – Alternative
My Top 5: Sevendust, Flow, Puddle of Mudd, Creed, Disciple, Vertical Horizon, Evans Blue

    Depswa
My Top 5: Submersed, Allele, Faktion, Blindside, (New) Adema, Ra, Dredg

Dilemma (My band) – Industrial rock /Metal/Alternative
Heavily inspired by the music he loves, Alex Weinstock has devoted himself to creating a band just like the ones he loves but decides to take it one step farther. Bittersweet is a combination band but combines different artists sounds with each song.
My Tops: Adema, Irrational, Taproot, Chevelle, 40 Below Summer, Cold, Soil, Systematic, Blindside, Spineshank

    Dimmu Borgir - Black Metal
My top 2: The Kovenant, Ram-Zet, Deathstars, Rammstein, Eisbrecher

    Disturbed - Nu-Metal/Hard rock
My Top 5: Soil, Systematic, Irrational, SevenDust, Spineshank

    Dope - Nu-metal
My Top 5: Mushroomhead, Godhead, Nonpoint, Blindside, Dry Cell

    Drowning Pool - Metal/Hard Rock/Nu-metal
My Top 5: Soil, Systematic, Godsmack, Ra, Five Bolt Main, Sevendust, Godsmack

    dredg - Hard Rock
My Top 5: Depswa, Submersed, Five Bolt Main/Flaw, Ra

    Dry Cell - Nu-metal
My Top 5: Scars of Life, Dope, Orgy, Adema, Spineshank, Taproot, Blindside, Sloth, Disturbed, Smile Empty Soul

    Dry Kill Logic - Nu-metal/Metal
Dry kill Logic sounds like a combination of everyone from Taproot to Trivium, from breaking Benjamin to Shadows fall. These guys are truly awesome. I recommend Nothingface, Element eighty, Trivium, American Head Chagre, Mushroomhead, Twin Method, Twisted Method, Static-X and Crossbread

Dust to Dust(Black Water Rising)- Post Grunge/Hard Rock
My Top 5: Speak No Evil, The Union Underground, Systematic, Soil, Porcupine Tree

    E:

    Earshot - Nu-Metal/Hard Rock
My top 5: The Deftones, Blindside, The Damning Well, Orgy, Disturbed, tool

    Egypt Central - Hard rock
My Top 4: Faktion, Stone Sour, 12 Stones, No Warning, Seemless, Pacifier

    Element Eighty - Nu-Metal
My Top 5: Endo, Dry Kill Logic, 40 Below Summer, Submersed, Seemless

Evans Blue - Hard Rock/Mainstream Rock
My Top 5: Waking, Vertical Horizon, Tool, A Perfect Circle, Breaking Benjamin

    Endo - Nu-Metal
My Top 5: Element Eighty, Dry Kill Logic, Blindside, Depswa

Erase the Grey - Metal/alternative Rock
My top 5: Alter Bridge, Puddle Of Mudd, Submersed, Depswa, Twin Method

    F:
    Filter - Progressive/Hard Rock
My Top 3: Audiovent, 12 Stones, Stone sour, Army of anyone

Flaw/Five Bolt Main - Hard Rock
Nobody sound like these guys, they are one of a kind. If you like Flaw, I recommend their new band Five bolt Main, and vice versa if you like Five Bolt. Umm… You might like Ra. Yeah, check out Ra.

    Fingertight - Alternative Rock
My top 6: Lennex, Depswa, Submersed, Sinch, Smile Empty Soul, Manmade God

Five Finger Death Punch - Death Metal/Nu-Metal
My Top 5: Devil Driver, Demon Hunter, Twisted Method, Twin Method, Primer 55, American Head Charge

    Fuel - Hard Rock
My Top 4: Machine Head, Nickelback, Nirvana, FLOW

Future Leaders of the World -Post Grunge/Alternative Rock
My Top 5: Nirvana, Thornley, Puddle Of Mudd, Seether, Slant

    G:
    Godhead(Favorite Band) -11/19/06-
My Top 5: Marylin Manson, Dust To Dust, (Older) Cold, Taproot, The Kovenant, HiM, Orgy

    Godsmack – Alternative/Metal
Godsmack has an excellent lead vocalist, and some really cool easternly influenced songs. Their music is good quality and well played. Their songs however lack feeling and style. I don't feel that this band truelly has a style of their own, even with their eastern influence. And I personally just don't like them. There are however a few songs by them that should not go unnoticed by any Alternative or metal fan. These songs are excellent. They are, "Awake", "I Stand Alone", "Serenity" and "Moon Baby"
My Top 5: Speak No Evil, The Tea Party, Ra, Dust To Dust, Sevendust, Saliva

    H:

    Helayln Flowers - Industrial
Check this Italian Techno band out. You can't understand a word she's saying but that's okay cause she's really hot. These guys are really gothic and sound a lot like Lacuna coil. Check em out bitchesss.

    H.I.M (His Infernal Majesty) – Gothic Rock/Alternative/ambiant/Pop-rock
These guys have had a great career. Girls drop dead at their singers feet. They've produced tons of singles and have created a truly unique sound that is very inspiring, even to me. His voice is very deep, yet very soft at the same time. His songs are mainstream yet have very gothic/ harmonic minor melodies. A lot of his songs are pretty heavy to, and use a really distinct distorted guitar. Good band.
My Top 5: Lacuna Coil, Godhead, Bittersweet, Irrational, Five Bolt Main, Ambulette, Muse

    Hurt – Progressive Rock/Alternative
Hurt sound exactly like Live however their song writing isn't as good. I only like 1 or two songs by these guys and they are, their single, "Rapture" and an excellent, industrial sounding song called "Forever" which sounds strangely like A Perfect Circle.
My Top 5: Live, Porcupine Tree, Thornley, Velvet Revolver, Seether

    I:

    Information Society - Synthpop
My Top 5: Shiny Toy Guns, GDX, The Beloved Tre Lux, Colony 5

    In Flames – Death Metal
In Flames is Pretty much exactly like Trivium. His voice is a bit less melodic but he still manages to use it for both creepy speaking, screaming and melody. These guys have been around a while. They've got some pretty heavy stuff… most of it is to heavy for me. But their new Album, Come Clarity is really great. The quality… you have to get used to it, but the songs are REALLY catchy. Especially for death metal. And even if your not a fan of all the screaming, there are still a lot of songs on the album you can like.

My Top 4: Trivium, Shadows Fall, Ram-Zet, Dry Kill Logic, Static-X

    Imogen Heap – synthpop/Electropop/Piano pop
This gal is pretty mainstream, however they are presented in a very unique, techno/pianist way. Usually I'm not a fan of more uptempo happier music, but her's is really catchy actually. All my friends who like gothic rock like her. So, check her out.
My Top 5: Jem, Ambulette, Shiny Toy Guns, Chiasm, Denali

    Incubus – Incubus
My top 2: Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Mindless Self Indulgence, Dredg, System of a Down

    I:Scintilla - Industrial/Gothic/Hard Rock
My Tops: Ayria, Nocturne, Porcelain and the Tramps, Irrational, Ghost Orgy, Aural vampire

    Irrational – Industrial/Technometal/Alternative Rock
You guys probably haven't heard of Irrational. They are native Californian band with a great ear for technology. These guys play hard rock industrial music and bring back in the old school DJ scratches and Linkin park style effects to their music. However, unlike a lot of bands these guys truly have a sound of their own. Its almost gothic, but you'd have to hear it yourself. If you like Adema, Dry cell, Orgy, Blindside, Scars of Life, Dry Kill Logic, Smile empty soul, or anything like those guys, you should DEFFINATLY check out Irrational. These guys rule.

    J:
    Jem -- Pianist/Rock
Jem was featured in two movie soundtracks, Closer and Ultraviolet with their two singles, "Come on Closer" and "24". So if you remember these two songs from movie commercials and like them, check out Jem.
My Top 4: Imogen Heap, Ambulette, Chiasm, Denali

Killradio – Alternative/ Grunge Metal, Punk
These guys have a lot of attitude and aren't afraid to speak their minds. The lead singer has a very unique, almost immediately recognizable voice that really cuts through. I like these guys a lot. They are very similar to Papa Roach
My Top 4: Papa Roach, Rise Against, The Offspring, Marylin Manson, Manmade God

    Kittie -- Metal
Kittie is a chick band that's about as hard core as any band could get. They've got an extremely gothic sound and a great quality to their productions. Kittie is unique; they aren't Death Metal, but are actually quite similar to bands like Mudvayne and Nothingface who are kind of in-between. So if your afraid they'll be to heavy for you, give them a try. They are pretty much mudvayne with a female singer.
My top 3: Ram-Zet, Lacuna Coil, Ghost Orgy, Dry Kill Logic, Element Eighty, Static-X

    Korn – Industrial Rock/Synth Rock/Nu-Metal
Korn is funny they have a discography of over 150 songs. And… only 12 good ones. Such a stupid funny band. Their 12 songs are original, unique, and amasing. But those other ones. Oooh man, they are AWFUL. Some of the worst crap ever. Man… just get their singles album.
My Top 5: Taproot, Dry Cell, Spineshank, Orgy, Irrational, Godhead, Razed In black , Static-x

Lacuna Coil – Symphonic Gothic Metal/Rock
Lacuna Coil is a gothic rock legend. They are THE gothic rock band. Although there a couple of similar bands such as evanescence, no one captures the same esoteric and atmospheric sound that Lacuna Coil has created. With both a male and female vocalist, the band uses voice as an instrument. They know when each is necessary and often overlap each other to create a cool, creepy effect. The band has it also, Cello, Viola, synth, ugh. Great band. Check them out. This band will get you into so many other great bands.
My Top 5: Ram-Zet, Godhead, H.I.M, Ambulette, Ghost Orgy, Flyleaf, Evanescence, Kittie, Muse

    Live – Post Grunge/ 90's Alternative
This guy has a really unique voice and brings and brought a whole new style to Alternative and Progressive Rock. The lead singer of the New Band hurt strangely sound a lot like him. But Hurt is the only exception.
My top 4: Soundgarden, Porcupine Tree, Hurt, Alice In Chains, Dream Theature

    Lo-Pro (Favorite Band) -5/20/05- -- Alternative Rock
Lo*Pro is currently working on their sohpmore album. It's been taking them a really long time because it's near virtually impossible to top their first. The first album not only had amazing, extremely original songs, but the quality and artistry was absolutely incomparable, especially for a bands first album. These guys have the most unbelievable Vocal Effects, and it is on every single one of their songs. Which makes them all sort of sound the same… but that's good, because we love their sound so much.
My Top Recomendations: Sinch, Breaking Point, Seether, Porcupine Tree, Alter Bridge, 3 Doors Down, Live, Hurt, Dredg, FLOW, Thornley

Machine Head – Alternative, Metal, Machinehead
These guys have been around for a while now but their sound is still totally new and innovative. With a similar sound to Metallica these guys add in a whole new thing. Metal Rap. Its not like rap rap at all, its got its own style. A way of speak singing to a heavy guitar. Really cool. If you haven't heard them before I'd start with their song "From This Day". These guys have a large discography, they've been rocking since the early 90's.
My top Recomendations: Mushroomhead, 3rd Strike, Dope, Ill Nino, Metallica, Papa Roach, Dry Cell, Alice In Chains

    Madside – Grunge Metal/ Alternative
These guys don't have their own sound and are pretty unoriginal while I'm at it. But they sound like everyone else who's good so, hey. Not complaining. I only know two of their songs, Enemy and Never Enough. Both really good. Check em out if you like Papa Roach or Rise against. They are very Grungy.
My Top 2: Papa Roach, Slant, Skrape, Rise Against, Flow

    Manmade God -- Alternative Rock
Oh man!!! These guys are incredible!!!! They have Such a unique sound and great quality to their music. No matter what genre you like, you have GOT to check these guys out. 5 stars all the way.
My Top Recomendations: Sinch, Lo*pro, Seether, Thornley, Flow, Velvet Revolver, Skrape, Machine Head, Our Lady Peace.

    Marilyn Manson – Industrial Rock/Nu-Metal
Marilyn Manson has definitely created an Image for himself. This image is also often applied to the entire industrial genre. However, odd as it is, even though as many people have heard of Marylyn Manson has George Bush, barely anyone knows what his music actually sounds like. His music is gothic, dark, whacky, promiscuous. It's really unique, and really innovative. Manson, despite his creepy image is actually a really creative guy and good orator as well. He said all those who don't love him, Fear him, and that's the way it should be. Without his makeup, he's actually pretty normal looking. Looks like Dante From Devil May Cry lol.

My Top Recommendations: Godhead, Spineshank, Papa Roach, Dear Damien, Mindless Self Indulgence, System Of a Down.

    Massive Attack – Electronica/Pianist
Don't know much about these guys except that the one song I have by them, "Teardrop" is the theme song for the show house. You might have heard it. But the actual Radio Edit has vocals. Really nice Vocals to, beautiful song.

  • Songs with Odd Videos

    Dez 8 2007, 20h02 por LG65

Eskimo Joe - Black Fingernails, Red Wine

    Why this video is odd?

Well, from what I know, the band is kidnapping some people and about to bury them, Goodfellas-style. The people captured are themselves, only 'older' (see "A Song is a City" and "Girl").

Enter Shikari - TocarOK, Time For Plan B

    Why this video is odd?

It's both odd and funny. It's because all the band members (Rou, Rory, Chris & Rob) are playing TOY instruments! It's odd because everyone in the room is performing extreme stunts.

Killradio - TocarDo You Know (Knife in Your Back)

    Why this video is odd?

Well... the band is performing in a school stage. And the frontman (Brandon Jordan) is teaching a class, but in a kind of wrong manner... Weird.
