Rude, crude, and something of a dancefloor smash, Consolidated's ultra-political output took a neat turn into sexual politics with this track, when they got The Yeastie Girls in to provide a rap detailing the delights of cunnilingus. Aside from it's headline-grabbing vocals, it's not hard to see why it became a dancefloor favourite - it's thumping beat is somewhat infectious...

Back in the 90s, Brian Warner's alter-ego was actually something thrilling to listen to: particularly on this staggering concept album, the album that made him an arena-level rockstar and offended an awful lot of people along the way, too (both religious types and sneering alternative types - he must have been doing something right to get them both on the same side...). This track was initially, perhaps, lost in the torrent of fury and hate that this album brought forward, but once a few listens passed, it finally revealed itself as one of the highlights of the album - with much of the electronic effects stripped away, this was a raw, feral four-minutes that gets better and better with every listen.

Amid the stampede of nu-metal bands in the late 90s, some more interesting bands did appear. Kill II This were one of those, owing more to the industrial metal of earlier in the decade than anything else. Not all of their material was great, it has to be said - the band all-but-disowned the first album other than the title track, and the last album wasn't up to much either - but the two in between were certainly of interest. The standout on second album Deviate was this monster - opening with scratching and heavy-duty techno, before a thunderous industrial metal juggernaut storms through it all. A rather unusual touch were the quasi-gospel backing vocals, which while they didn't always work on other tracks, sure as hell did here. Random fact: main man Mark Mynett nowadays is a senior lecturer in the music technology department at the University of Huddersfield...!

No, I had no idea what the hell this lot were on about, either. They had apparently been around for some years in Japan before they first broke through in Europe with this fantastic, techno-metal beast, with impenetrable lyrics but one hell of a groove. They subsequently gained quite a fanbase over here, too, even if they were never quite as impressive as this again.

Is this where I admit to being something of a Mansun fanboy back in the day? At one point, I had everything - including the white label CD release of Egg-Shaped Fred - released up to the third album, although a large proportion of my CD collection being stolen a long time ago meant I don't have it any more. I still listen to the band with some fondness, though, particularly the lofty aims of the first album. One of the later singles from that album is my choice here, one of the more straight-up indie rock tracks here but still with some glorious harmonies and those quite odd lyrics about a dominant lover...

I've no shame in admitting that my interest in Sonic Youth's output ceased in 1994 or thereabouts, having found just about everything they've done since profoundly boring. The reason is tracks like this - a searing, thundering tribute to a roadie of theirs who was murdered, and the storming opener to their most commercial album by far.

One album where the cover summed up exactly what was going on - this was thrash/groove metal that was like repeated punches to the face, such was the aggression contained within. And this was the first of those - seemingly a challenge by Phil Anselmo to whoever was talking shit about him to come and say it to his face. Good luck, folks...

Greg Dulli's band were never quite like other "alt-rock" bands. With a clear love of soul/R&B music from decades past, their sound stood out to say the least. None more so than on their finest album, Gentlemen, where Greg Dulli's frank honesty about his and male failings in general made for some brilliantly observed songs. This one - about trying to give up the booze, apparently - was one of many highlights on the album, and Dulli's vocals on this track are simply awesome - the wracked emotion in his voice clearly from personal experience of what he was singing about...

One of few bands able to release a B-sides compilation that was easily the equal of the "A-sides", hearing them all together on Sci-Fi Lullabies perhaps made a convincing case that the first CD at least was the best album they ever released. And one of the centrepieces of that first CD was this track, a snarling, spiky glam-rock stomp with all of the sexual ambiguity and darkness that Suede did so well in the early years. It was also an astoundingly good live track, too.

One of a handful of Tool-esque bands that appeared around this time, Liberty37 played it less deliberately obtuse, hard-rocking in sound at times but with clear, intelligent lyrics for the most part (and frequently referencing Bill Hicks and Tool in their lyrics and themes, too). Their second album sank without trace, but the first album was a joy to listen to. Better still was this B-side, a slow-burning missive of anger that had vocalist Ishmael Lewis calming enunciating every single syllable clearly of lyrics that screamed revenge. By some considerable distance their most powerful live track, too...

And yes, I know this sits above the track that it is more than a little bit of a nod to (Slint's Good Morning Captain, if you needed to ask). Back in the days when Idlewild were still a small band from somewhere in Scotland, they were also still interesting, a spiky, rough'n'ready post-rock-influenced punk band who were yet to turn into a dull R.E.M. clone. This EP - all 19 minutes of it, of which six minutes were the last track of six - flew by in a flurry of youthful energy, but it was the title track that was king here. A bit slower, but all angular rhythms and Roddy Womble's rasping, partly-screamed vocals adding to the excitement. The biggest shame is that Idlewild seemed to be trying to erase this from their history: quite why it wasn't on their best-of a few years ago I have no idea.

The finest one minute and fifty-six seconds Therapy? ever recorded, this is a short, pounding metal track of tongue-in-cheek hatred and self-loathing (it's tempting to suggest this was a pisstake of the grunge scene) that opened their most successful - and best - album by miles.

The Beta Band's first single, a marvellous, shambling electronic-folk track that quite rightly caused something of an indie sensation (and initially was an absolute bitch to get hold of until The Three EPs compilation followed eighteen months or so later). I'm not exactly sure what it is that made me love this track so much - maybe it's the pure simplicity of it, maybe it's just that it's a brilliant song, plain and simple.

The glorious, in-turns-screeching-then-dreamy opener to one of the critic's favourite albums of the 90s, this track took the whole idea of quiet-LOUD to insane extremes - opening with a cacophony of squalling guitars (multitracked and through god only knows what effects pedals), before settling into a mellow feather bed for Bilinda Butcher's vocals to float on - and the two sections trade places for the rest of the song. It's bloody marvellous, and really, it lives up to the hype. Honestly.

It really is hard to overstate just how revolutionary this sounded when it first dropped. The first really seamless attempt at bringing together extreme metal and industrial electronics, the whole album is a masterpiece, but more than anything it's the opening (title) track that left jaws on the floor. The machine-like riffing, the tool-like precision of the drumming...this really was cybermetal, and the band have spent fifteen years unsuccessfully trying to better it.

Presumably a comment on the salivating mass media when it comes to another serial killer on the loose, this was a marvellously tongue-in-cheek track that even went to the lengths of creating fake news reports and station idents to back up the subject matter. Musically, of course, it's what OMS always did so well - chunky, riff-tastic funk-rap-metal...

Long-since removed from R+ live sets, this track (it translates as Bend Over, by the way) was at one point the climax, so to speak, of the live set, where Till would lead out a be-gimped Flake onto the stage, unveil a dildo from his trousers, and I'm sure you can guess the rest. The track itself is great on record - rampaging industrial metal that R+ do so well - but live it really is something else (and is about ten times heavier, too). Need I remind you that this (live) video is not especially worksafe?

One of dEUS' most majestic songs, a musing on getting old, and reflecting on the past with a rueful smile, it's also one of their most tender songs, too. Much of the first dEUS album was reflective, but never quite like this. It's weird, bluesy-rock feel is gradually chipped away and replaced by fuzzy, surging rock, before returning to the original calm to close. Older live versions used to add an additional verse at the end, and I was never sure why this wasn't kept in for the recorded version...

This band's endearingly retro take on electro - only using analogue synths, not to mention their image - certainly made them stand out among the legions of other electro bands at the turn of the century. It also helped that they wrote a number of spectacularly odd tracks, too, of which this was certainly the wierdest. The robot-fetishism only hinted at in the repeated (robotic voiced) title refrain of this otherwise (kinda) straightforward electro-rock track was made really bloody obvious by the ultra-not-worksafe video...of a girl ordering a robot, umm, escort, and then being, er, pleasured. A lot.

Tuesday Ten: 90s Industrial Metal

As a result of the NiN gig - at the last minute I've won two tickets thanks to those nice people at drownedinsound, and also mentioning one of the below songs on Twitter/Facebook yesterday, today's Tuesday Ten had a hasty change of subject yesterday afternoon to this, and I'll hold over what I had planned for a few weeks (as next week's is all-but-drawn-up, too).

So, what is this week? A concentration on one of my favourite genres, which is a somewhat difficult one to pin down, particularly as many different interpretations of it exist. But anyway, let's give it a go.

The 90s were a heyday for industrial metal - let's be honest, few bands have been able to continue a high quality output of this style into this decade, and fewer more recent bands still have been able to keep the flame alive (with notable exceptions being the likes of Interlock and Cyanotic). To confirm what I mean by industrial metal - lots of industrial electronics, and lots of metal guitars and rhythms. Exactly how bands have interpreted this - and how they have balanced the two - is what makes this genre so fascinating.

Prong
Snap Your Fingers, Snap Your Neck
Cleansing

Let's start with the monster that began this list in the first place. An, oddly enough, probably the most "metal" of all of the tracks here. Prong started out as a metal band, and gradually added more electronics and industrial textures as they went along, but Cleansing remains their brutal tour de force - the opening three tracks in particular are absolutely bulletproof, of which this longstanding metal dancefloor anthem is the third. The electronics are relegated to the background, but the mechanised rhythm is stripped to it's bones and overlaid with an awesomely clean guitar riff. Add to that the roared chorus, and really, this track still deserves to be heard.

Starting out deceptively quietly - the first verse is all but whispered above a pulsing heartbeat, before Patrik Wiren bellows the title one more title and the hulking beat tramples through the speakers like a stampede of very large mammals. At least four remixes of this track exist (the Pitchshifter ones in particular are worth hearing), but for me it's the original every time - this track sounds monstrous loud, and even better on a club PA.

Speaking of Pitchshifter, before they went a little more punk and, perhaps, a little more mainstream - even so, www.pitchshifter.com rightly remains a landmark album from that period - they were a grinding industrial metal band that had a lot of power, a lot of rage, and not a lot of metal-mainstream appeal. The first sign that this was changing was this brutal anti-fascist single that got them a lot of attention at the time (and indeed was the first song I heard by them, on John Peel's late-evening show on Radio 1). I've seen them fifteen times since the mid-90s, and they've only failed to play it once or twice - pretty much the only song they play from this period any more, which is a crying shame as there a number of other killer tracks from this time. Still, altogether now: "Like Never/Like No..."

Streetcleaner

I'm cheating a little here, seeing as this track was actually released on Godflesh's debut album in mid-89 - however the band were such a titanic influence on the entire industrial metal genre that this deserves it's place here. Slower and most likely heavier than just about anything else here, Like Rats grinds it's way through nearly five minutes of densely-layered beats, riffs and a filthy, pulsing bassline that anchors the whole track. Justin Broadrick's heavily-treated vocals - which sound truly fucking evil - just add to the oppressive atmosphere.

The Land of Rape and Honey

Even earlier - from 1988 - but also here due to it's enormous influence, is this, the opening track from the album where Ministry suddenly turned very heavy indeed and set the template for twenty years more of industrial metal. It's distorted, heavy, and fucking ace. If, somehow, you've never really listened to Ministry, you could do worse than starting here.

I think we have Metallica, of all people, to thank for the style of Die Krupps' 90s output - in the 80s one of the early EBM acts, following the release of a tribute EP covering Metallica songs, suddenly covered their already muscular sound in guitars. Which is where I discovered them, and have been a fan ever since. This track - one of their more anthemic tracks, really - was also one of the (many) highlights of their live set when they played in Sheffield a year or two back.

Millenium

Another band who took on guitars to their mainly electronic sound were these guys, and the change caused something of a split with the fans at the time, although in hindsight Millenium remains one of FLA's best albums (and the first two tracks - Vigilante and the title track - have been fixtures of live sets ever since they were released). The guitars didn't remove anything from FLA's power - in fact they provided something of a turbo boost, and again became immensely influential.

Nowhere was FLA's influence (although from before Millenium!) more clear in the metal scene than with Fear Factory in the early 90s, after they hired Rhys Fulber from FLA to remix some of the tracks from their debut, death-metal-based Soul of a New Machine, the result of which was this EP, a vicious, industrial-death-metal hybrid that sounded like no-one else at the time and sounded fucking immense. An extraordinarily brave experiment at the time, it remains an intriguing stepping stone towards the all-but-perfection of following album Demanufacture, and I'll probably find people disagreeing with my choice of track from this EP (in all honesty I could have picked anything from it). I do wonder how much the work on this influenced Fulber in his work on Millenium, actually...

Astro Creep: 2000 - Songs of Love, Destruction and Other Synthetic Delusions of the Electric Head

While Rob Zombie achieved greater success with his solo work, he has never bettered his work with White Zombie, and in particular the sample-and-electronics-stuffed Astro Creep album. Every single gap is filled with whatever crass B-movie or pr0n samples Zombie could find, and they all add a twisted humour and sense of fun to many of the tracks. Of the, what, five, tracks that still fill metal dancefloors now, this is of course the best known, underpinned by the pulsing electronics and John Tempesta's drum rhythms that sound like they are being beaten out with clubs.

I could barely miss NiN from this list, really, seeing that they were probably the band that helped push the genre into the mainstream the most - even if Pretty Hate Machine is, in the main, electro as they come. It was with Broken that they really moved to being industrial metal - it's seething fury overlaid with masses of guitars, which then got broken into jagged pieces for The Downward Spiral. Burn followed this as a seperate release on the Natural Born Killers soundtrack, and as such other than being played live frequently it's otherwise a little forgotten - which is a shame, as it's probably the heaviest track NIN ever wrote. Again, best played very loud indeed for the right results...

Cubanate

Cubanate were one of the earlier industrial bands to include guitars from the outset, and over four albums seemed to get heavier and heavier with each release, despite seemingly using less in the way of guitars! Nowhere was this clearer than on this brutal opener to their final album, a drum'n'bass monster with a bassline that could take down buildings (and you more feel as opposed to hear). I rarely dare to risk this when DJing nowadays - one, not many people know it, and two, I don't want to scare all the kiddies away!

The final band - and eleventh, I know - misses out being linked to on Spotify or on Youtube as it simply doesn't exist on either, sadly. Shame - Kill II This were one of a number of bands that roared into life in the late 90s in the UK who were not afraid at all of using industrial electronics to bolster a chunky metal sound. Sometimes a little contrived - and sometimes not all that great (most of the first and last albums) - the two albums in between were ace, and live they were even better. Their crowning moment was this, the gabba intro morphing into a fast-paced moshpit filler that was pretty much as close as anyone got to matching the heights Fear Factory reached few years before.

With it being Easter this weekend, I thought it perhaps apt that I turn to the subject of religion for this week's TT. Although not unexpectedly, perhaps, with the music that I listen to, it proved somewhat difficult to find that many songs that cast religion in a positive light. Still, I did find the odd one to ensure some kind of balance, at least.

Front 242
Welcome to Paradise
Front by Front

Opening with the sample of "Hey poor! You don't need to be poor anymore! Jesus is here!" sets out the stall of this track straight away. Even with it now being over twenty years old, it's classic use of cut-up samples of evangelical preachers gently pokes fun at religious evangelists by using only what they say (and the beats are pretty ace, too, although the live version is far superior.

Still not entirely serious, the Super Furries went a different route a few years later, simply asking for God to prove he exists, in a slightly tongue-in-cheek way. It's a cracking track, too, one of those songs that has an amazing ability to wedge itself in your head and not go away, and it doesn't overstay it's welcome either, lasting less than two minutes!

As noted above, trying to find more positive songs about religion for me was pretty difficult, but here's one. Tori Amos is an artist who has consistently used religious imagery and references in her songs, although few as obvious as this - the lyrics are about male-dominated religion, and cheekily asking God if he needs a woman's touch to help "him" out...

While this is about as un-christian as it's possible to get - lead man Glenn Benton branded an upturned cross into his forehead years ago - this track suggests an alternative reason for Jesus being on the cross. Deicide's defiantly anti-Christian schtick frankly gets as tiring as pro-Christian music does, though, and sometimes it's so ridiculous that it's hard to take it too seriously.

Yes, more growly death metal shouting about "RELIGION=BAD", but here in perhaps a more measured way (Behemoth are one of those bands who put lengthy explanations of their songs in the lyric booklets, which is often helpful as you can't make out an awful lot of the lyrics) - with this awesomely bludgeoning track bringing forth a vocal detailing how they anticipate a time where religion is not relevant, where, as they put it"we are free to project ourselves the way we want on the map ov [sic] infinity".Slayer

Slayer are also no strangers to songs criticizing religion - each album seems to have at least one, although this album was full of them. Pick of them for me, though, is this one, a rampaging track roaring it's disapproval of religion as a tool for war to spectacular effect.

The Downward Spiral

When not wallowing in his own misery (with admittedly striking results) on The Downward Spiral, Trent Reznor did have the odd moment when he become somewhat less insular and turned his jagged rage on a different target, and Heresy remains, fifteen years later, a quite astonishingly powerful track. Underpinned by a gigantic, stomping beat, the vocals are all treated-to-hell - the verse vocals being reduced to an almost meek hiss, before the chorus simply explodes with fury.

Probably one of the most extraordinary songs that Nick Cave ever wrote, this is one of many, many Cave songs that feature or reference religion at some point or another, and in this list it is perhaps a rare track that casts religion in a positive light - telling the tale of a murderer facing the electric chair, and finding redemption in finally admitting that he did commit the murder after all, and being ready to face heaven.

This was a song that apparently caused no end of ruckus with the Church upon release, mainly due to the suggestion that God has something of "a sick sense of humour" - the song tells the story of a girl who tries to kill herself, survives, finds God, then gets killed by being struck by a car. Either way, it's a great song, although perhaps dated a little now.

Somewhat unexpectedly, this album's credits are finished off with thanks to "Jesus Christ, Our Lord" - Michael Gira never having struck me as being a particularly religious chap, but this album as a whole is riddled with imagery that suggests God was never far from his mind when creating this album, which is something like the bridge between the searing brutality of early Swans material and the more reflective, less extreme (but no less dark) later period work. Anyway, this track - already long enough on CoG, the version I've linked to on Spotify from live album Feel Good Now stretches well beyond ten minutes - is the incredible centrepiece, where the concept of "connecting" with God is deliberately confused with sexual imagery to awesome effect, and as the wailing choirs build and build in their devotional sound, it's appears no accident that it is also structured to sound like a sexual act.

Tuesday Ten: Live Venues

A different TT this week, in that it is not exactly about the bands themselves (although they do come into this). Instead, it is my favourite live venues to go and see bands at. I've been going to see live bands for over thirteen years now, and I've lost count of how many I've actually seen, or at how many venues (the last time I even tried to count was back at the end of 1999, and by that point I'd already seen over 650 live bands. We are probably looking at two or three times that figure now). In that time I have been to many fantastic gigs, and many bad ones, too. There isn't any set criteria for the best venues - there are memories attached to some, the best gigs I have ever seen at others, and others because they are simply great venues to see live music at.

Other good venues I may not have covered (and yes, I know I haven't covered Corp here!) - and the stories that go with them - would be great to hear. So here we go...

Brixton Academy, London
This is probably my favourite place to see live bands. This cavernous old theatre is an awesome venue, with a sound setup that is probably better than anywhere I have ever been, and it is difficult to get a bad view of the stage from anywhere in there. Oh, and I've seen a fair number of really great gigs here. Like the first time I saw Rammstein, and the week in October 1998 where I saw Mansun (in apparently their finest ever show), Placebo and Motorhead...

London Astoria / LA2
A venue under threat, at present, of redevelopment - mainly due to the pressing need to expand Tottenham Court Road station with the impending construction of the CrossRail scheme. It will be a damned shame to see it go, too: as a mid-sized venue in London the Astoria is great. Yes, it's grimy, dark and the beer is dreadful, but as a gig venue it is fantastic. It's been a long time since I saw bands there, but memories of the great gigs are undimmed. Like seeing The Orb, the Super Furry Animals on a Saturday lunchtime, Mogwai back in January 1997 when they were more in the mood to deafen everybody (we got half-an-hour, most of which was Stereodee), an extraordinarily intense Deftones show a year later...and also downstairs at what used to be known as the LA2 I did my first ever music journalism job (reviewing Downset - I can even remember the date, 29-Sep-96 - for the King's student newspaper, ROAR), and also fatefully first saw VNV Nation support Cubanate in what must have been late 1999. My friend Tanya and I (somewhat famously now) agreed then that VNV "would never catch on". Oh, how wrong we were...

The Duchess Of York, Leeds
A long-departed venue - an early victim of the gentrification regeneration of Leeds city centre, the location now houses a Hugo Boss store - that was the classic small live venue. A busy "alternative" pub, with a large room that had a stage at the back, and has been the setting for many a legendary gig over the years (particularly an early visit of Nirvana to the UK). For me it will always be associated with seeing Girls Against Boys (for the first time) and Brainiac (for the only time) one midweek night in June 1996, that remains one of the top five gigs that I have ever seen.

The Cockpit, Leeds
Not the greatest of live venues, all told, but this is here for it being the location of my first "club" gig - Whale supported by a-then-unsigned Placebo, way back in November 1995. It has also been a place I've been back to time and again to see various alt. bands, including Miocene, Dark Star, Girls Against Boys, Six by Seven and most recently The Birthday Massacre - and while it isn't in the greatest of locations, and gets frighteningly hot in the summer - I still enjoy seeing bands here.

Manchester Academy complex
This really is a great venue. Well, really it's four venues (nowadays Academy 1, 2, 3 and Club Academy, but in years past used to be Academy, the MDH and the Hop'n'Grape, as well as the Cellar Disco), but all of them are pretty good. I've mainly seen metal/punk bands there, I think, including Pitchshifter, Machine Head, Fear Factory, Kill II This, AFI, Killswitch Engage, Chimaira, God Forbid and others, but I've seen VAST, Rico and even Skinny Puppy all in Academy 3. With it being part of the University, the drinks are cheap, even if the tickets often aren't, and in the main it seems to be a well-run venue that has always been a pleasure to attend gigs at.

Kentish Town Forum
The third London venue in this list, this is a venue I seem to have been to more since I left London than when I was there! I only actually recall seeing Mercury Rev there while I was in London (although come to think of it, I think I saw Shack there during their brief period in the limelight), and since I've seen incredible gigs by both Einstürzende Neubauten and Skinny Puppy, as well as Suicidal Tendencies, who weren't so good. Like other venues of it's size, the sound quality is already top-notch, and again viewpoints are always good (the enormous stage helps to make that easy). With Neubauten playing again there this year, I should be back soon...

Nottingham Rock City
Back a bit further north, to the grimy Rock City. This massive complex is great for gigs in either the big or small room, but all the most memorable ones have been in the larger room. Like Apoptygma Berzerk back in 2002, Henry Rollins doing his old Black Flag stuff as a WM3 benefit, and then Mindless Self Indulgence and Pitchshifter last year. Not quite so good for club nights - the music is somewhat predictable - but always worth a look for gigs. Particularly as in the main they are unusually punctual!

The Leadmill, Sheffield
I've only been to the Leadmill a handful of times, and in those times I've seen 65daysofstatic, The Dresden Dolls and Gogol Bordello (as an aside - I didn't even know Start Wearing Purple had a video!) - all awesomely good shows. In fact, I still haven't seen a bad show there. The layout is a good one, too, with a really wide stage and reasonably shallow room to allow everyone better views. The deafeningly loud sound system helps to mask any sound deficiencies, too...

Camden Palace, London
Or at least, as it was - nowadays it is known as KOKO. A wonderful venue - yet another multi-floored old theatre-style venue that London seems to be stuffed with - in my early University years in London (particularly '96/'97) I was a regular visitor for gigs and in particular the Feet First club night on a Tuesday night, which always had interesting bands. If only I could remember most of them...!

K17, Berlin (best description I can find about the place is here)
This is an amazing club venue out in Ost Berlin, built in an old industrial unit with some unusual features. Like the entrance booth and cloakroom being outside - not much fun in the depths of winter, when we were there - but the rooms themselves are well-sized. The best is the hall where we happened to see Ah Cama-Sotz, with a stage that seemed to be about six feet high - and the cavernous ceiling helped the sound, too. I really need to go again...
