  • Kero One - Windmills of the Soul

In all the Wrong Places.

  • Eclecticity

    Mai 12 2007, 11h05 por mreys

Take your top 20 artists. For each of these artists, collect the top 5 similar artists. The resulting number of unique artists is your eclectic score. If the score is small (extreme = 5) your musical preferences are very limited, and if it is large (larger than 80, extreme = 100), then you have an eclectic musical preference. You can compute your own score at http://anthony.liekens.net/pub/scripts/last.fm/eclectic.php

An interesting observation: my recommendations radio seems to feature more and more jazz the longer I listen to it. A few days ago, there was less than 50% jazz, with the rest being made up by a big amount of alternative/indie and a small amount of industrial and - surprisingly enough - something I would categorise as death metal myself, but nowadays, it's pretty much exclusively jazz (and some motown). There's still the occasional hip hop track, but I always ban those on sight (well, "sight").

Now, I don't mind artists like Dexter Gordon, Duke Ellington, Sonny Clark, Sonny Rollins, Lee Morgan, Herbie Hancock, Count Basie, Thelonious Monk, Cannonball Adderley, Blossom Dearie, Kenny Burrell and so on, but it's a rather fascinating development. My theory so far is that it's all some kind of positive feedback loop: the more jazz I listen to, the more likely other jazz artists are to show up in my recommendations - and when I listen to my recommendation radio, the loop closes, and jazz begets jazz.
