Set 19 2009, 16h50 por FutureLoveI was having one of those cleaning out days today....you know, where you open up boxes that have sat on top of wardrobes for the last two years and think "do I really need this in my life anymore?" I made the tough decision to get rid of all of my video cassettes, which made me feel sad as I've had some of them for nearly 20 years (e.g. Madonna's The Immaculate Collection). However, I've replaced most of them (where available) with DVDs, so they're off to the charity shop.
Anyway anyway anyway! One video that hasn't yet made its way to DVD is Kate Bush's The Whole Story. She's enjoyed a slight revival lately....I think it's the impending change of the season. I've listened to my top 3 Kate Bush albums a fair amount lately. FYI, these are Hounds of Love (of course), The Dreaming and Lionheart. I thought I'd do a bit of a tribute to her on here....a) because I've not written shit lately, b) I found an old email containing my top 10 Kate Bush songs and c) I wanted to have all of her videos linked in one place…

Ago 28 2009, 2h44 por warren33The Sensual World was Kate Bush's sixth studio album, the proper follow-up which came four years after the release of Hounds of Love (and three years after the release of the compilation The Whole Story). For me there is a symbolic split in the Kate Bush discography at this album. While it is true that The Whole Story effectively splits her career into two distinct eras, for me, the split was about formats: with The Sensual World in WAIH's archives, Kate Bush's albums ceased to be on vinyl and were on CD from that point forward.
Of course, personally, I own all of her stuff on CD, but how I loved playing those vinyl records.
I have to admit with some embarrassment that I haven't explored this album as deeply as either The Dreaming or Hounds of Love, which may have been one reason - directly relating to the LP - that I held off on writing about it for so long. Still, such long gaps between "Off the Rack" entries is not exactly acceptable. I'm never going to get through my entire music collection at this rate!
Jun 25 2009, 22h24 por warren33A compilation of Kate Bush's work up through 1985's Hounds of Love, The Whole Story isn't, as implied by it's title, a compilation of all of Bush's singles from her first five albums. Instead, it is a non-chronologically sequenced "greatest hits" package. Only one track from the disc was completely new at the time: the creepy "Experiment IV," a song which seems oddly prophetic as modern riot policing techniques are increasingly using "sonic weaponry" as a method of crowd control.
Other than that, the only thing new to be found here are Bush's re-recorded vocals on "Wuthering Heights." And, yes, her more mature voice, lacking in the squeak of her teenaged pipes makes "Wuthering Heights" the superior version of the song.
It was this record which was my first introduction to the music of Kate Bush. I was digging through the vinyl archives at WAIH…

Dez 7 2007, 17h15 por tangledshoelaceMy emotional connection to music emerged with the flowering of my social life in my mid-teens. Music wasn't a part of our household really, it had to come from outside.
A Boy gave me or maybe my sister a cassette copy of The Whole Story, probably dubbed from vinyl. It opened with a version of Wuthering Heights, which immediately captivated and fascinated us.
We took turns attempting to transcribe the lyrics, trading the tape back and forth as exhaustion and hand cramps hit.
I miss the effort of such sharing and discovery, even though I wouldn't give up the ease of handling files instead of vinyl, tapes, and discs.
