Desde quando freqüentava o convento escolar em Abbey Wood, Sudeste de Londres onde estudou piano e violino, Kate Bush chamou a atenção de David Gilmour do Pink Floyd, que ajudou financiar as suas primeiras fitas Demo. Assinou um contrato com a EMI aos 16 anos, gravando Rock Progressivo. Entretanto, nos primeiros dois anos de seu contrato, Bush não lançou nenhum album, preferindo terminar seu tempo na escola e fazer aulas de dança, mímica e música. Terminou a escola com 100% de aproveitamento em todas as disciplinas. Em 2005, Bush foi convidada para uma entrevista com Mark Radcliffe da rádio BBC onde revelou que a gravadora EMI à época de sua contratação não lançaria um album até que ela estivesse pronta, mas a manteria sob contrato a fim de que nenhuma outra gravadora pudesse fazê-lo. Nesse meio tempo, a gravadora EMI enviou-lhe uma boa quantia de dinheiro para que ela comprasse um sintetizador e pudesse frequentar aulas de interpretação com Lindsey Kemp. Durante esse tempo, Bush compôs e gravou perto de 200 canções, que hoje podem ser encontradas em gravações piratas(conhecidas mundialmente como as ‘Gravações Fênix’). Também fez várias apresentações na Grande Londres com a “KT Bush Band”. Seu primeiro album, “The Kick Inside” (uma expressão que pode querer dizer ‘A Bola Dentro’ ou a ‘Centelha Interior’), foi lançado em 1978, tendo como base as canções que tinha escrito durante os dois anos anteriores, incluindo a clássica “Wuthering Heights” (em português do Brasil; Morro dos Ventos Uivantes)

Maybe, but in all honesty 80's mainstream was dominated by Glam and New Wave. Truly, there were very few actual GOOD artists that emerged in the 80's. Today's mainstream is technically a lot more diverse in what's dominant (but I'd have to say its more Hip-Hop and Metalcore dominated, of course others would disagree). Of course, even now we have those select few artists that are actually good. Really, the only shitty "indie" I've heard that's surfaced the mainstream is Nevershoutnever and Owl City. Also, I absolutely hate that argument, because every era has its shitty music.
