1. Opeth – These guys have been my favorite band for about 5 years running now. But like a lot of fans I was a little disappointed with the newest album Heritage. They took a pretty radical turn away from progressive death metal towards a much more jazzy, progressive rock style. I don't mind the change in principle. The album has some really tasteful passages and the whole thing is still pretty dark and intense but many of the compositions seems unfocussed and unmemorable.
2. Katatonia – I got into these guys through Opeth. I saw them open up for Opeth earlier this year and I quite like them but there isn’t much variety to their sound. They do a certain kind of depressive gothic metal really well. Jonas Renske is an excellent singer and songwriter but after listening to three or four of their albums pretty extensively I think I’m probably done exploring their music as I expect it’ll all sound the same as what I’ve already heard.
