Haters give me them salty looks, Lawry's. Yeah, definitely not the most intelligent lyrics around, but they're definitely clever and amusing. He's simply not a great lyricist. If you truly believe that, then you need to broaden your horizons on hip-hop.

I still can't stop listening to "Welcome to Heartbreak". If you really want to hear the voice of someone who has been dealt a bad hand over the year, listen to this song from 808's and tell me you can't hear it in his voice...because it's there..and it's real. Also "Sound Opinions" on NPR gave the album the following review: http://www.soundopinions.org/shownotes/2008/112808/shownotes.html (read footnote 2) . I will have to agree with you as well UncleGuito, a lot of Kanye's albums prior to this weren't all that great. Don't get me wrong, they had a few good tracks here and there, but this new album is nothing short of a work of genius. Congrats Kanye, you have polarized your fan base completely, and I can't begin to thank you for it. Especially not following in the footsteps of so many MTV hip-POP stars these days. You have finally made something honest.

Nas is so much more generic than Kanye. Don't get me wrong, I love Illmatic, but it's generic as shit.

he's actually not a strong rapper...i would call him witty/clever though.

I'm not a huge fan of Kanye's previous work (too generic for me, I prefer Nas, Lupe any day), but I'm really enjoying this album. People don't like change, but he did a really great job with this release. Not rap, but he it's not like he's claiming that it is.

Kanye's a good rapper. what are you guys on >_>

Yeah, I somewhat agree with you, optimistic_tour. Kanye is definitely not the most proficient lyricist, but he has undeniable charisma and a distinctive and unorthodox flow. He's more of the punchline type of lyricist rather than cerebral, but I love him for it.

Best kayne release to date, dont hate it because its different. Its personal, its gritty, its real, its emotional, its daring, if you cant accept and see the piece of art that this album is then you can fall into the majority who are ignorant

it's really funny seeing all the mainstream pop fans cry about his "not being as good" as he used to be - Kanye was NEVER a good rapper, despite being a great producer. I love him behind the boards, but not the mic. So this is, in a way, better than what came before, in my opinion. Feel free to disagree without being a total chump.

It's pretty narrow-minded when people say they never listen to anything to do with R&B, especially since if it wasn't for that genre, they wouldn't have their precious rock music. It's disrespectful to say something like that, although admittedly the quality of R&B is atrocious these days. Why can't people broaden their horizons??

love lockdown is great. at first it was difficult to really see any point in changing what he's all about, but the more i listened to 808s and heartbreak, the more it just clicked. kayne really is leadin' the mainstream rap game now.

I never gave a crap about Kanye West before this new album. I just figured he was exactly the same as every other rapper out there, nothing different from the pack, but this new album is so impressive. I have been listening to him all week, and I don't even like this genre of music! I realize that Kanye' main genre is rap, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't listen to the album just because he changed his style for one album. Like I said, I never ever listen to anything r&b related, but this album blew me away. Kanye said this album was 'therapeutic' and was created as a way for him to vent the loss of his mother and broken relationship with his now ex girlfriend. Just give it another try.
