Mas a instrumentista, que já foi tema de artigos de publicações especializadas sobre o seu estilo, se distancia do artifício “técnica pela técnica” - que acomete muitos virtuoses. Ela costuma usar bastante o “tapping” (um som tirado da guitarra ao pressionar as cordas como se fossem teclas de um piano e que tem Stanley Jordan como um de seus grandes expoentes), mas diz sempre privilegiar a composição em vez de fazer uma exibição gratuita de suas habilidades.
Kaki King começou a tocar com cinco anos de idade por incentivo de seu pai (a quem descreve como uma pessoa vital para trilhar o caminho da música), ao começar o aprendizado de violão clássico. Ela diz que à época não era uma grande entusiasta das aulas, mas na adolescência adotou definitivamente a carreira musical ao ganhar trocados em apresentações em plataformas de metrô.
Mas o gosto por fazer composições próprias resultou em seu primeiro disco de carreira, “Everybody loves you”, lançado por uma pequena gravadora em 2003. No ano seguinte, ela já soltaria seu segundo disco, “Legs to make us longer”.
