  • Top 20 - AUGUST 2008

    Ago 6 2008, 22h13 por Tony031R

Ok, I promised something, it has to be done. I'm back after a full month, gigs, parties, tons of work to be done aaaand...total lack of activity in the last two weeks (just can't do anything else except sit around and chill...I guess I needed this or whatever). Anyway, highlight of the month, mister Danny Williamson aka LTJ Bukem himself, at Felsziget festival in Tg. Mures. Considering the fact that I was waiting to see him spin for 4-5 years now, it's been an oportunity I couldn't have missed. More than this, I also managed (thanks mister Break and VRT for the oportunity) to interview Danny for www.beatfactor.ro (you can also watch the video interview here) and hang around with him and Conrad for a little chit-chat and some words of wisdom. What can I say about the man that almost invented the sound we nowadays call drum&bass. Don't know about you but it's a nice experience to talk about music and the directions it takes today, with the man that was launching a movement and a worldwide label when you were 3 years old. Nice stuff. That's all it needs to be said.
On the other hand, July was kind of a big month from my own gigs' perspective, since I managed to play a decent set in Baraka (on awful soundsystem conditions) and an almost perfect set at Fabrica, a day after Bukem's at Felsziget. Really glad everything worked out more than fine.
Right now, before I head out to the seaside for two gigs, on the 8th of August and on the 22nd same month, I thought about keeping the habit alive and give you some tunes to chew on in the next few weeks. So here goes this month's 20:

The Chemical Brothers - We Are The Night: Vörldvayd araştırmalarım neticesinde bu senenin en hayal kırıklığı yaratan albümü olduğunda herkesin hemfikir olduğunu gördüm. Yanılıyorsunuz götlekler! We are the night, saturate, a modern midnight conversation, battle scars gibi 80ler cheesyliğini günümüz tunelarıyla birleştiren kim var lan.

Dinar Bandosu - Saykodelikdeşik: Her zaman çakma gruplara ayar olurum, hele rok yapıolarsa.

Beastie Boys - The Mix-Up: 96daki The in sound from way out a benzeyen bu albümünde bu götveren yahudilerin enstrüman kullanımındaki becerisini görüp kendimi tepeden aşağı yuvarlamıştım.

Younger Brother - The Last Days of Gravity: Posford ve posfordculuk bir suçtur.

Prometheus - Corridor of Mirrors: Twisted dan çıktığını bilseydim biraz daha mesafeli dururdum. Say sevmeyen zihinler bile saykopatik oldu sayenizde.

Jacek Sienkiewicz - Coc Midas? GN/GL: Adı ve soyadıyla anılan herkes böyle müzik yapsa avropa minimal haus ve tek siğninde mesela hüseyin karadayı ahahhahhh.

Beckett - no name kutusuz: exegene'den insanlığa insani dnb yapan onun bunun çocuu, bide irlandalıymış. Kesin pirenses diye hitap ediyodur arkadaşların sana. Tek bir release yetmez.

choenyi - Defervescence: On numara dijital varoluşsal müzik. Teknolojik işlerle uğraşırken tek geçerim örneğin plazma televizyon için mağaza yağmalamak.

V/A - 8-Bit Operators: The Music of Kraftwerk: Senor Coconut yetmedi mi sorusunun cevabı yetmedi olacak ki hala yeni robots, radioactivity, pocket calculator, trans-europe express, showroom dummies versiyonları dinleyebiliyoruz.

  • Apparently I have nothing to do, except listen to music

    Abr 15 2007, 23h25 por drasil

I just looked at my fresh weekly chart, and noticed that I've listened 872 tracks this week. That's about 125 tracks per day. If an average tracks lasts for 4 minutes, I listen 8 hours of music every day.

What's also interesting, is that the top artist this week, Blonde Redhead, is at 41 tracks. That's under 5% of the total amount! You would expect more tracks to be in the top 3, but apparently that's not the case.

The weekly chart looks like this:

    1. Blonde Redhead 41
    2. Made Out of Babies 39
    3. Yann Tiersen 37
    4. KJ Sawka 36
    5. Apparat 35
    6. Gui Boratto 35
    7. Chick Corea 25
    8. The Cinematic Orchestra 23
    9. Feist 22
    10. Air 22

So the top 10 is very very even. In fact, there are 59 different bands or artists that have 5 or more tracks played this week. Do I ever get tired or music? I hope not.

So I have completely lost the plot and fallen deeper into love with Venetian Snares yet again. Doll Doll Doll is the latest classic I've previously overlooked and probably now rate it up there with calvacade & Rossz. Fan-bloody-tastic!

In other news I saw Clark on Wednesday. The gig involved 2 mates oblivious to IDM completely and another who likes certain stuff. We all got nicely tipsy n red eyed and all of us loved it. Unfortunately he had quite a few sound problems and even blew the amp in Night Knuckles but aside it was pretty amazing and a heavy set of songs from the amazing Body Riddle.

If I were to do my top tens for 06 again now BoDY Riddle would end up top 3. Which is why Clark's run up my list!

Unfortunately the Korg works going...nowhere as I need to fix the plug but there should hopefully be some jamming in my friends studio tomorrow. We're perspectively doing either a 4 man drum n bass band with full live equipment or a 2 man sampler + live drummer combo.

Also check out the KJ Sawka / Pendulum / London Elektricity live performances on youtube. The latter 2 done with bands and the first a one man live drum n bass act with sampler and drums.

  • Facebook Collection Impressions: #2, Electronica

    Ago 7 2006, 16h35 por Charron

I'm a little late on this one. I was on vacation down in Virginia when the set was released. But, better late than never, so here's my impressions of this pack of 25.

    1. Chicago Transit Authority - Emotive: I'm not sure how these guys are classified. My guess is some kind of ambient/breakbeat/techno combination. Definitely a decent piece, albeit a tad long.

    2. The Pinker Tones - Sonido Total: More of a dance track, and in Spanish no less. I have limited knowledge of electronica, so let me just say this is one of the tracks from the set that would fit in a Jet Set Radio soundtrack.

    3. Wax Tailor - Que Sera: Plenty of scratching and sampling, but the beat is solid and hip-hop like. I think, if you like Gorillaz, you may like this song, and maybe the rest of their work.

    4. Ursula 1000 - Urgent / Anxious (Featuring Cristina): See my alt. rock journal for my opinions on female vocalists. This one comes off as a pop song with electronic beats instead of instruments.

    5. Venus Hum - Yes and No: Oddly enough, my opinions on this one are about the same as the last track. Go figure.

    6. The Presets - I Go Hard, I Go Home: Welcome to Australian indietronica, I suppose. The song's really heavy on echo effects, which I don't like, but at least the beat and rhythm work well.

    7. Justice - Waters of Nazareth: Justice is apparently a "glitch/coarse electric" band. And it certainly comes through in this song.

    8. Audion - Kisses: Trippy album cover, to start. Sticks with the somewhat coarse sound, but has a nice beat to back it up. Not a bad track, in my opinion.

    9. Kevin Yost - What Is Cool?: Jazz influenced, it is. In fact, it's hard to describe it as an electronic piece, since the jazz stylings take over.

    10. Tortured Soul - Always In Heaven When I'm With You (Spinna Mix): These guys appear to be new, and I like them already. There are vocals here, but they're a tad quiet. Besides, the beat is solid enough to take over.

    11. Daedelus - Sundown: Not much I can say about this, aside from it's a good piece and the whole tribal dance-like break is largely unexpected.

    12. KJ Sawka - Close Your Eyes: Another somewhat poppy entry to the list. This one does feel like an electronic song, though. Not too fond of it, but it's not that bad.

    13. The Fitness - Day Job: Another electronic/pop hybrid. I just can't stand this one, between the beat and the lyrics.

    14. Alias & Tarsier - Dr. C: This is more of an alternative track, with a bit of electronica thrown in for good measure. Can almost compare it to The Postal Service.

    15. iiO - Is It Love: I would describe this as an electronic pop ballad. Bit more ballad than anything else, overall.

    16. London Elektricity - The Strangest Secret in the World: Back to dancable, heavily-sampled music. This one's got a great vibe to it, and is another track that'd fit in a Jet Set Radio game.

    17. Thievery Corporation - Originality (featuring Sister Nancy): ...and out of nowhere, reggae. I like this blend, since it is still an electronic track, but the reggae provides a nice beat to it.

    18. Assemblage 23 - You Haven't Earned It: I like the beat, but I really hate the vocals. Kinda reminds me of a heavy rock singer, which is a genre I can't stand.

    19. Camille - Ta douler: And now, some French pop. I can't really call this electronica, since I can't hear much electronic sound. Yet again, I wish I payed attention in French class so I'd know what's going on here.

    20. Roy Ayers - Tarzan (Ame Remix): Another long track. This one's a little bit ambient. Haven't heard the original, so I don't know what was done with it, but it's not too shabby.

    21. Gaelle - Falling: Here's another track I have a hard time calling electronica. I'd put it more in the R&B, jazz realm. While it's not my style, it's certainly a good track.

    22. James Figurine - Apologies: This one's certainly electronic, and rough electronic at that. The singing is vaguely familiar, but I can't put my finger on who it sounds like.

    23. Alabama 3 - Bullet Proof: Hard to describe this one, I'd put it as somewhat of a hip-hop-rock kind of sound. Another track that reminds me, albeit vaguely, of Gorillaz, though with a more prominant female vocalist.

    24. Nortec Collective - Tengo la Voz: Back to the Latin sounds introduced earlier on. One of the funkier tracks (though not a funk track. Just funky.) Heavy on the horns.

    25. Junior Boys - In The Morning: Scratchy, beepy, all the stuff that electronica is stereotyped as having. Just lacks the sampling. The vocals aren't too shabby, but it's just too electronic for me.

And, my top picks from this set, according to my own tastes:

    The Pinker Tones
    Wax Tailor
    Kevin Yost
    Tortured Soul
    Alias & Tarsier
    London Elektricity
    Thievery Corporation
    Roy Ayers
    James Figurine
    Nortec Collective

So, there you have it. Tune in next week when I review whatever they're putting out next.
