  • Broken Social Scene's "You Forgot It In People"

    Dez 5 2006, 1h15 por blancheflower

    You Forgot It In People
    Broken Social Scene

    Released October 15th, 2002 (Paper Bag/Arts & Crafts)
    Written by S.M.

I knew I was destined to be into this record before even hearing it. Typically when one is given a copy of an album by their significant other-- in my case, my girlfriend of two years by that point, packaged alongside a Weakerthans t-shirt and a ticket to go see the Microphones-- they can expect to get into the piece of music simply by a lovely association. The track "Lover's Spit" some time later appeared on a mellow mix she made for me; she also used select tracks to create atmosphere in a high school theatre production. We may've listened to it in a bedroom, dazed in some post-party afterglow... and all that stuff is lovely, but it any case it didn't matter about all these after-the-fact tidbits. You Forgot It in People reminded me of my lover before I unwrapped the plastic.

Before one can argue that I'm taking a completely subjective stance in this critique, I'll also say I was immensely drawn by the tacked promotional sticker, which exclaimed, "The last record was constructed for lovers in bathrooms... this is for the ones who leave their homes looking for hope." What a triumphant setting! I didn't know anything about the band, nor was I familiar with the subdued Feel Good Lost, but all that didn't matter because this was the story of the band coming into the light. This was the breakthrough. The fact that the tracks were divided into two sides on the back cover, just like in the golden age of vinyl, only made me giddier.

Well you can imagine how I felt when I heard the fucking thing. Within the first twenty seconds of "Capture the Flag," the listener is first brought back to those acid bathtubs and lipstick-stained mirrors the band explored in FGL, but this time the main character doesn't pass out in the corner. The majority of the LP's first half examines-- from the epic riot of "KC Accidental" to the wandering "Looks Just Like the Sun"-- our young hero lifting the window sills, swinging open the doors, and finding love in a club. Up until "Pacific Theme," we're into the happy and exciting thrill of life spent in the fast lane, but right before we can forget the sublime silence of solitude, we drop into arguably the record's centerpiece, "Anthems for a Seventeen Year-Old Girl," a heart-felt lament that would elevate me to nirvana if I could only forget that Emily Haines would go on to be the panties-flashing front woman of bloody Metric.

Barring the second-side opener and single "Cause = Time," the rest of YFIIP is spent driving home, or trying to fall asleep while your roommates downstairs are blaring their rave favourites. It is here that I desire to add to that slogan on the promo sticker. The one-two punch of the instrumentals "Late Nineties Bedroom Rock for the Missionaries" and "Shampoo Suicide" seem to meander back into the comfortable dark, rather than traverse outside in search of hope. This tone remains the same to the end of the record, where "Anthems..." is modestly reprised in "Pitter Patter Goes My Heart."

After being released just over four years ago, it isn't hard to see why this record shook up the independant rock scene, let alone my homecity of Toronto, and went on to be on numerous best-of and favourites lists. Although the band do sound fuller and more realized on their next self-titled release, as well as in their debut and as kc accidental-- when you're in the mood-- this is the release that showcases the band in their most admirable incarnation: a delicate balance of chaotic rock and burnt-out symphonies.

    TRACK PICKS:
"Stars and Sons"; "I'm Still Your Fag" -S.M.
    "Pacific Theme"; "Lover's Spit" -S.V.
    IDEAL LISTENING SETTING:
At sunset, on the way home.
    BE SURE TO CHECK:
Akron/Family, Do Make Say Think, Apostle of Hustle, The Arcade Fire

  • Music fans don't really like music.

    Jul 25 2006, 19h56 por bigsexyshaq

A lot of people here claim to like music. A lot of people here claim to love music. But I'll tell you something folks, it's just not true. On just about every Last.FM account, you'll see an enormous amount of songs listened to. Just by that number, you assume, "Wow, they listen to a lot of music." Each and every person on this site must have a copy of the book "How to Lie with Statistics" because I'll tell you something, not ONE of those people actually enjoys listening to music. To them, it's a chore, just like any other chore. But at the end of the day, when they see just how many songs they've listened to, they think, "Wow. I like music a lot." I'll tell you something though. They really don't like music at all and having a lot of songs played doesn't mean that they do either.

Let's take a look at a common fraud:

    Broken Social Scene – Swimmers [red]just listened[/red]
Broken Social Scene – Windsurfing Nation 6 minutes ago
Broken Social Scene – Fire Eye'd Boy 10 minutes ago

Do you see that? There's no seconds, just "10 minutes." I know those songs, and I know for a fact that Fire Eye'd Boy does NOT end on an even minute. He's obviously not listening to the whole thing. Honestly, I think he's using some sort of scrobble-spammer. How is he able to do this? How can a person not listen to the whole song and still have it scrobbled?

He is taking advantage of the fact, as you all know, that when you scrobble, you only have to play half of it to get Last.FM to count it as a play. Why would Last.FM design their product to do this? Is it because they're part of the scam? Yes. Last.FM purposely designed their site to attract the kind of moron that would put a scrobble-spammer on throughout the night. Because, they judge their worth on AMOUNT of users, not QUALITY of users, as evidenced by their pride of having a million users.

What kind of influence is this on the music scene? Quantity over quality? That's not right. It only encourages hackers to try to get that #1 fan position for Coldplay that they so desire. Much of the music industry is like this, judging an artist by QUANTITY of sales, rather than QUALITY of their music. This is a poor poor influence and we need to do something about it. There can't be rewards for amount of tracks played. Instead, there should be rewards for quality of tracks played. I am demanding that Last.FM no longer show charts based on AMOUNT of anything, and make better charts, based on how good each song is.

Let me tell you something, right now, among my intellectual friends, Last.FM is the butt of all the jokes. When one of them goes for an insult, they just say "Last.FM user." This can stop if we change this. We can better the reputation of the Last.FM user, and of the music user.
  • Music fans only really like music.

    Jul 25 2006, 0h57 por bigsexyshaq

There are some real dimwits out there. I was at Barnes and Noble today and there was this guy there. I was in the mood to have a little fun. I decided, just to see how he'd respond, to try to scan a set of 100 blank CDs in the music preview machines, while making a big commotion about it, looking all confused. He asked me, "What are you doing?" I was like, "What do you mean?" He said, "Uh, you're trying to scan blank CDs." He had this disoriented look on his face. I said, "I am? Oh! My mistake." I then walked away. You know, music fans are such idiots. A lot of music fans don't like to think and it's fun for me to hit them over the head with some reason. It's Luti-Kriss, you know? It's so crazy how people can handle emotion in their SONGS but not in REAL LIFE. It's the same emotion, the same content, yet they discriminate in where they want it. That kid will SAY he likes feeling good, but he really doesn't. He likes 'feeling good' on his iPod. If he really truly honestly liked feeling good, then he would like it everywhere. This is the #1 best-selling product of ignorance. Made with 100% pure apple.

I thought about this a Lil' Mo, and this can be put into a broad-scale metaphor for how we view the world, compared to how we view music. We say we like a lot of things in life, yet, even when the thing is in its purest form, we still don't like them. Does this mean that we're lying? Yes. There are many people who are smart, but still don't know what they like. The truth is, if they only like something in a musical context, then they don't really like it at all, and are therefore lying to themselves. For example, they like Korn's basslines when they're in the song, but do they like it when Fieldy is doing it right in front of you? No! Precisely. They don't like KoRn at all!

You don't know what you like. Stop saying that you like things, because once it goes outside of the music, you won't like it anymore!

I used KoRn as a popular example, but it can be applied to anything. I've heard so many people say that they like African-American culture. So, every time someone says this, I ask them, "Do you like blacks when they're selling crack and eating garbage?" No! Exactly. You would have rather have them expressing themselves artistically, because you don't want to catch a disease. There are so many examples of when people don't like purity. Similar to the African-American example, do you like very difficult exams when they're outside of a lyrical context? Oh, you don't? But I thought you liked to be challenged! "I guess I only enjoy people talking about difficult exams." Yeah: You were wrong.

Next time you claim that you like something, repeat to yourself, "I don't really like this item, unless when its in any other form, I like the item." It's true. You don't really like KoRn. You don't really like African-Americans. You don't really like God. So take my advice; avoid these painful "like" generalizations and avoid the consequences. As many a wise man hath once saye'd, it's better to be safe than sorry.
