Atuais integrantes: Rob Halford, Glenn Tipton, Ian Hill, Scott Travis e Richie Faulkner.

You didn't answer my question. By what is metal defined, if not by its riffs? I don't think a jazz band becomes a metal band when Halford drops in and sings or when Dave Lombardo rips the drumkit in pieces. However if Mr. Iommi comes in and replaces the jazz guitars with metal riffs, it would be a metal band with jazzy drums, bass and vocals. See what I mean now? You can deny it, but metal is indeed defined by its riffs. Ask 1000 metal fans or musicians and at least 95% will agree. Btw I didn't say metal was ONLY about guitars, but they play the main role and always have.

You still say that the riffs define metal, well, you know, metal is not only about guitars, despite what some may think.Motorhead riffs sound nothing like Black Sabbath.Iron Maiden riffs (and music) seems more influenced by Thin Lizzy,UFO,Wishbone Ash than Black Sabbath to me.Black Sabbath didn´t "invented" metal themselves. Many of the heavy rock (wherever you want to call them) from the 70´s helped, for example, without Ritchie Blackmore influence (specially his guitar solos),the twin armonies of Thin Lizzy,or the vocal style of Gillan,Plant,Byron, etc. it wouldn´t be the same, you know,is not only Sabbath.Heavy metal wasn´t a genre at all in the 70´s,still was traced in rock, still bluesy, that includes Black Sabbath and early Priest,at least until Stained Class. It was in the 80´s that it really was shaped as a genre.Heavy metal (the traditional one) was (and still is,actually) a form of rock, specially in the 70´s,then came the subgenres and metal kind of separated itself from rock.

"Nobody can deny that. And if you say metal is not defined by its riffs, then by what?" Never said that. When i meant classic metal,i didn´t mean 80´s metal only,i meant traditional heavy metal.Iron Maiden,Priest, and most bands of the 80´s (with the exception of Trouble and such) didn´t sounded like Sabbath.I never said that 70´s Sabbath wasn´t metal, and those are examples of some of the most obiously metal songs they had,i don´t deny that are metal.

Ok ,i almost stopped reading when i read this " You think that, because the 70s material is quite different to classic 80s metal, it's not metal. "..Ok,if you think that the Dio era albums aren´t metal guess that makes no sense to keep with the discussion.

"those albums give me that classic metal feel" That is your and others error in reasoning. You think that, because the 70s material is quite different to classic 80s metal, it's not metal. However there's no logic in that. Of course music from another decade sounds different, especially since it was in the early stages of development. But it has one thing in common: The RIFFS. If you listen to the main riffs of songs like Symptom of the Universe, Into the Void or Children of the Grave, you should realize that in its essence those are metal riffs just like those played in the 80s and until today. Also one thing that makes Sabbath stand out from most metal bands is their experimental style. They had lots of different influences in their songwriting, which most other metal bands simply don't have. However, despite all those different influences, it's all driven by Iommi's distinct, dominant metal riffs. Nobody can deny that. And if you say metal is not defined by its riffs, then by what?

" and a lot of the tony Martin stuff sounds like hair metal to me"- I think iommi was trying to stay current with the music scene..martins voice sounds a lot like those singers in the rock bands of the late 80s. Martin couldve easily sang for dokken and done a better job then don dokken himself.

I don´t know why you think that,to me those albums give me that classic metal feel, the production, riffs, vocals, lyrics, everything.

Dio era was way closer to 'hard rock' than the Ozzy stuff. [2] Definitely, at least the first two with him. And the Tony Martin stuff sounds like hair metal in comparison.
