How Varied is My Musical Taste?
Dez 14 2009, 0h37 por theprogdoctor
First, make a list of your top-20 artists overall. Then, for each of these artists, add the 8 most similar artists to your list. Delete any duplicates, count up the number of entries on your list and this will give you some idea of how eclectic your listening habits are. A score of 9 represents an extremely unvaried musical taste while a 160 represents an extremely varied one.

Top 1000 Albums (1970-2009) - Part I (2000-2009)
Nov 23 2009, 12h42 por Funkafonik
Alright, as we near the end of this first Y2K decade, it's time to take a look back at all the best Albums that have been released in the last 40+ years.
I'll start off this extensive research with 2000, up until 2009. I'll then go back to 1980, all the way up to 1999, to then wrap things up with the 70s and before.
I'll be choosing my Top 25 Albums for each year; an ordered Top 10, and ~15 others worth mentioning. I'm also considering the live albums and EPs (~5), but they have their own section since songs on these have usually been released on official releases. The final result will be a Top 1000 for Official Albums, and Top ~250 for Live/EP albums.
These are general rankings of how I see them today, and based on my Last.FM songs playcounts (2005-now) put through the formula:
Total Sum of each Album's Song's (running time X playcount)
DIVIDED BY
Album's Total Running Time
Thanks to MediaMonkey and its amazing scripting abilities, that formula gives an Album's REAL playcount, taking into consideration every song's lenght & playcount in relation to the overall album's lenght and # of songs on it.
You'll see the result (# of times I've really listened to an album since 2005) besides each, along with my 10* Rating. (x/x)
Besides each Year, you get the Total of all Albums' Playcounts and the average of all Albums' Ratings. (x / %)
Note that I haven't necessarily discovered and enjoyed all these albums on their released years, some I discovered years later. So these are also based on how important (to me) some of these albums were at the time.
(**) are the complete albums I was into at that time;
(*) are albums that contained only a few song(s) I was into or listened to at that time;
and those without (*) are albums I discovered years later.

50 Questions about your Top 50.
Out 31 2009, 5h30 por MelodeathAddict
1. How did you get into 29? Kamelot
I think I found them out by friends recommendation in 2003. After that, I was so addicted to them. When they released The Black Halo in 2005, I must have played that 10 times on day of release. One of my favorite Progressive/Power Metal bands for sure.
2. What was the first song you ever heard by 22? Týr
That would be just like every other Týr fan:
Hail to the Hammer. :P
3. What’s your favorite lyric by 33? Turisas
From the track:
Cursed be Iron
"Did thy father, or thy mother
Did the eldest of thy brothers
Did the youngest of thy sisters
Did the worst of all thy kindred"
4. What is your favorite album by 49? Equilibrium
Sagas without a doubt. Mana is one of the most epic songs ever. Just imagine Wintersun made a 16 minute song, it would sound a little like this. :P
5. How many albums by 13 do you own? Ensiferum
All four:
Ensiferum
Iron
Victory Songs
From Afar
Their EP:
Dragonheads :D
6. What is your favorite song by 50? Vital Remains
Dechristianize for sure.
Dave Suzuki is awesome.
7. Is there a song by 39 that makes you sad? Rage
Beauty is a track that can be pretty sad. It's the saddest part of 'Suite Lingua Mortis', to my knowledge. You really need to hear this 21 minute Progressive Metal piece (Suite Lingua Mortis, not Beauty of course) btw, it's epic.
8. What is your favorite album by 15? Korpiklaani
Tales Along This Road of course. This was Korpiklaani at their best so far.
9. What is your favorite song by 5? Opeth
Forest of October without a doubt. It's pure awesomeness. :D
10. Is there a song by 6 that makes you happy? Edge of Sanity
Crimson because it's just so good. I smile every time i hear this epic piece :D
11. What is your favorite album by 40? Akercocke
Choronzon obviously.
12. What is your favorite song by 10? Black Sabbath
Ah the almighty Sabbath.Don't care what anyone says, Dio was better in Sabbath than Ozzy, even though I like both. My favorite track is:
Die Young.
13. What is a good memory you have involving 30? Carcass
Yep. Seeing them live at Bloodstock Open Air 2009, of course. :D
14. What is your favorite song by 38? Wintersun
It would have to be: Winter Madness because amazing solo is amazing.
15. Is there a song by 19 that makes you happy? Children of Bodom
Why yes, it's:
Kissing the Shadows. Seriously, who can deny the awesomeness in that solo?
16. How many times have you seen 25 live? Symphony X
Once, opening for Dream Theater. What a dream line up that was.
17. What is the first song you ever heard by 23? Metallica
Errm...controversial band. :P
I believe my first track to be Creeping Death. It's been a favorite of mine for about 7 or 8 years.
18. What is your favorite album by 11? Tarot
It's got to be Suffer Our Pleasures literally for the song Rider of the Last Day, otherwise my favorite would be Follow Me Into Madness. I believe Marco Hietala could be God, if he exists whether he's in Tarot, Northern Kings or Nightwish, his music is pure awesomeness.
19. Who is a favorite member of 1? Dream Theater
You seriously want me to pick between John Petrucci, Jordan Rudess, James LaBrie, John Myung and Mike Portnoy? Well I'll pick Petrucci but only because he could co into World domination mode. Though Rudess can probably open portals with his keyboarding skills, but LaBrie can break things and people with his high F's in Learning To Live. Myung, that Korean could probably control nuclear weapons with his bass guitar. Portnoy could create Black Holes with his time sig changes while drumming. Let's face it, Dream Theater will probably be what is behind 2012 and the so-called "end of the world" ;P Ok, I pick Petrucci.
20. Have you ever seen 14 live? Alice in Chains
Nope, going to in December maybe though.
21. What is a good memory involving 27? Porcupine Tree
Listening to The Incident for the first time is the last good memory I had with this brilliant band. Which was in September so =)
22. What is your favorite song by 16? Bloodbath
That would obviously be
Bathe in Blood. I love the guitar tone on it and Mikael's growls are awesome.
23. What is the first song you ever heard by 47? Jeff Loomis
It was
Devil Theory I believe. Jeff only has one album out anyway but this is my first and my favorite by him. One of the greatest guitarists ever and I place him next to the likes of Michael Romeo and John Petrucci for that.
24. What is your favorite album by 18? Kreator
Even though most plays are for the newer albums, nothing they release will be better than Extreme Aggression. That is my favorite album by Kreator.
25. What is your favorite song by 21? Edguy
It's gotta be We Don't Need a Hero. Great band this.
26. What is the first song you ever heard by 26? Satyricon
It was Mother North. I just happened upon the video and it was awesome. :D
27. What is your favorite album by 3? Nevermore
Nevermore's This Godless Endeavor has to be my favorite. Seriously, it's just awesome and I think these guys get better every album. Lets hope The Obsidian Conspiracy is better. :D
28. What is you favorite song by 2? Iron Maiden
My favorite band despite being second most played. :D
This has to be a four way tie between
Hallowed Be Thy Name,
Fear of the Dark,
Only the Good Die Young and
Caught Somewhere in Time.
29. What was the first song you ever heard by 32? Avantasia
It was this beautiful track called
Farewell.
30. What is your favorite song by 8? Helloween
That would be the 13 minute Power Metal masterpiece:
Halloween. Kai Hansen is awesome.
31. How many times have you seen 17 live? Amon Amarth
Twice. Third time coming up this Sunday.
32. Is there a song by 44 that makes you happy? The Agonist
I'd say
Business Suits and Combat Boots because it helped my find the band.
33. What is your favorite album by 12? Ayreon
It has to be The Human Equation. That album is not only Arjen's finest piece of work, but it's an album in my top 5. James LaBrie, Heather Findlay, Mike Baker, Mikael Åkerfeldt and the rest, they all just rocked. I wanna listen to it now... :D
34. What is the worst song by 45? Gamma Ray
There isn't one bad song.
35. What was the first song you ever heard by 34? Guns N' Roses
I believe that to be
Paradise City. It's one of those songs I heard as a little chillen.
36. What is your favorite album by 48? Evile
Infected Nations by miles.
37. How many times have you seen 42 live? Mastodon
Once, I believe.
38. What is your favorite song by 36? HammerFall
It's gotta be a 3 way tie between Natural High, Templars of Steel and Stronger Than All.
39. What was the first song you ever heard by 28? Norther
I believe it to be Last Breath.
40. What is your favorite album by 7? Megadeth
Has to be So Far, So Good...So What!. It's definitely Mustaine's finest piece of work and it's underrated as hell.
41. Is there a song by 31 that makes you happy? Sonata Arctica
What? Almost all Sonata Arctica songs make me werry werry happeh! :D This mostly though Wolf & Raven.
42. What is your favorite album by 41? Katatonia
The almighty Brave Murder Day wins. :D I do like all Katatonia though. I see people bitch about them "going soft" and whatever. :P
43. What is your favorite song by 24? Warrel Dane
It's gotta be
Messenger or
When We Pray. Either way, they're both catchy as hell and well written. Dane is a great lyricist.
44. What is a good memory you have involving 46? Darkthrone
Hearing A Blaze in the Northern Sky for the first time.
45. What is your favorite song by 35? Tenacious D
Has to be
Master Exploder. Jack Black is cool. :D
46. Is there a song by 9 that makes you happy? System of a Down
Of course. There's loads :D but I would have to say most of all
Vicinity of Obscenity because it's so damn hilarious.
47. What is your favorite album by 4? Pink Floyd
I love the Floyd. My favorite would have to be either Meddle or The Wall.
Echoes is such a fantastic song.
48. Who is a favorite member of 37?Rage Against the Machine
Zach De La Rocha is the man.
"FUCK YOU I WON'T DO WHAT YOU TELL ME!"
49. What is the first song you ever heard by 43? Candlemass
I think that was
Mirror Mirror. The riffs are so heavy on that, it's awesome.
50. How many albums do you own by 20? Alestorm
I own all 2 albums. Both great. -
Progressive Nation 2009
Out 26 2009, 2h30 por -Zelgadis-
Fri 23 Oct – Progressive Nation 2009
Me fascinó especialmente
The Mirror y

Heir Apparent

The Lotus Eater
Windowpane

Hex Omega
Dream Theater:

An "A Nightmare to Remember" to Remember
Jul 30 2009, 23h53 por Kevin_Raven
Wed 29 Jul – Progressive Nation 2009
This was my first time seeing Dream Theater and my first time visiting the Asheville civic center, and it turned out to be 5 excellent hours of progressive music and one of the best concerts I have ever seen. I won't say too much about the opening bands, but Zappa Plays Zappa put on a really entertaining set, complete with some great showmanship and stage presence that really got the audience engaged.
As far as the mix and sound quality, Dream Theater sounded exceptional. I was a bit worried from the start when Scale The Summit sounded pretty muddy in the bass range, and I wasn't terribly impressed with either Bigelf or ZPZ's mix, but I was impressed as soon as DT started their opening song, A Nightmare to Remember. Though I was wearing hearing protection, the band had an almost studio quality sound, like I was sitting at home listening. Each of Portnoy's drum hits were crisp and distinguishable, and Jordan Rudess' keys were high enough to be heard but not overpowering. The vocals were the only part that sounded a bit rougher than on cd, but that's entirely to be expected anyway.
The stage was also visually appealing. It wasn't cluttered, and the band had plenty of room to move around. The backdrop and staging were obviously inspired by the new album, Black Clouds & Silver Linings, with a cloud backdrop, silver cloth draped around the sides, and a silver motif to many of the stage elements, speaker cabinets, and instruments. The overhead projector showed some cheesy computer animations, which although some of them look like they were made in 1992, are still images that every fan will connect with.
I was lucky enough to sit a few rows away from the front, almost right next to where Petrucci was standing. If I have one complaint about the band, they do seem to be a little full of themselves. Mike Portnoy wore a t-shirt from his favorite band: Dream Theater. Petrucci carried himself every bit like a rock god, emphasizing his solos with flair and some awkward facial expressions. John Myung seems to be immune to this vibe, though, he never seems to be in the limelight publicity-wise. He had this sort of panicked, Jackie Chan look on his face when he played, as if he was thinking "I hope I don't mess up" throughout the show, even though he's played these parts thousands of times. Each of the band members except Myung had miniature cameras attached to their mic stands that allowed the audience to watch them close up on the overhead projector, which was pretty cool, especially to see Rudess play.
I was overall really impressed with Jordan Rudess, and I'll have to check out some of his solo work now. I have a lot of respect for someone who is trained and grounded in music theory, and if you listen to his interviews, you can tell he knows what he is talking about. He did pull out several gimmicks during the show, including an iPhone solo and an LCD display showing a virtual Rudess, complete with robe and wizard hat following along the melodies that the real Rudess plays.
I was happy with the song selection, which included parts I and II from the A Mind Beside Itself suite, some of my absolute favorite of DT's work. They surprisingly didn't play the single from the new album, A Rite of Passage, but they did play The Count of Tuscany and as I mentioned earlier, A Nightmare to Remember. The encore, Metropolis Pt. 1: The Miracle and the Sleeper, featured an awesome dueling solo section between Petrucci and Rudess on his menacing Star Trek-inspired keytar. I only wish they could have played for longer; despite the lengthy songs the set felt a bit shorter than what I was expecting from Dream Theater. Overall, a great show, though. -
Progressive Nation 07-24-09

Fri 24 Jul – Progressive Nation 2009
Friday night was the kickoff of this year’s Progressive Nation tour in support of Dream Theater’s new album Black Clouds and Silver Linings. The co-headliner for the tour is the six-piece extravaganza Zappa Plays Zappa fronted by Dweezil and featuring the music of his late father. The two support slots were originally slated to be two groups from Sweden: BeardFish and Pain of Salvation. Last month it was announced that both bands would be unable to make it overseas due to some financial woes with their record label, and shortly thereafter the tour was re-billed with the Houston instrumental metal quartet Scale The Summitand a progressive/psychedelic rock band from California called Bigelfin the two opening slots.
Last year’s Prog Nation tour ended at the Fillmore in Miami Beach with a fair number of technical glitches including a Spinal Tap-esque moment where the venue’s fire curtain came crashing down, separating Opeth’s drummer Martin Axenrot from the rest of the band in mid-song. Luckily, Friday’s show seemed to go off without a hitch.
I had arranged to interview Dream Theater’s drummer Mike Portnoy at his hotel in Miami Beach. The day before the concert, I was informed that MP was unavailable but that I could sit down with singer James LaBrie instead. I arrived at the hotel’s lobby about fifteen minutes early to check my equipment and go over the material, but once the concierge got wind that I wasn’t checking in, I was asked (very politely, mind you) to get off of the premises. They could buzz the room for me but I didn’t have that information, so I ended up having to wait outside. The tour manager apologized and told me that there had been some fans camped out trying to meet the band earlier.
I spoke with LaBrie for a few minutes about the new album, future tour and video plans, his new solo album (which may be released in the first half of 2010), and his involvement in the sci-fi rock opera Roswell Six. Most surprisingly for me was the fact that the New York group has never yet played at the Madison Square Gardens. He had some more press to do so I thanked him for his time and headed over to the Filmore.
Openers Scale the Summit were incredible. They played a short set of songs from their new album Carving Desert Canyons, that featured tons of intricate, interwoven tapping lines. I was really surprised at how melodic they were. Instrumental metal bands tend to go off the deep-end of technicality, pushing the boundaries of their art form to the extremes, often at the expense of any non-musician listeners. STS’s members are all very technically proficient but the focus was on the group’s songs rather than the soloing abilities of it’s members.
The night’s second band was the Los Angeles group Bigelf. Decked out with bellbottoms and a scarf, the biggest top-hat I’ve seen this side of a Tom Petty video, and surrounded by stacks of vintage synthesizers, singer/keyboard player Damon Fox brought a serious 70’s vibe to Prog Nation. Although their note per minute ratio was dangerously low compared to the rest of their tourmates, the group was able to do a lot to evoke the early sounds of progressive rock with the swirling textures provided by the Hammond organs, Mellotrons, and Moog synthesizers. The majority of the songs they played came from their latest album Cheat The Gallows, with the highlights being Blackball and The Evils of Rock and Roll. The vocals were hit or miss and I felt the few sections without keys fell flat, but I have to admire the group’s dynamics and crushing stoner-rock grooves.
I was skeptical about Zappa Plays Zappa, as none of the current members were alumni of Frank Zappa’s touring bands and I had expected to see heavyweights like Steve Vai, Napoleon Murphy Brock and Terry Bozzio sharing the stage with Dweezil. I was blown away by some of the best playing I’ve ever seen from these young players. Although they did play some of Frank Zappa’s more popular humor songs such as Don’t Eat The Yellow Snow, and Montana, the focus was on all things technically challenging and unorthodox such as Inca Roads, St. Alfonzo’s Pancake Breakfast, Village Of The Sun, and even the bluesy Bamboozled By Love. Dweezil’s guitar playing was worth the price of admission alone, as he nailed the tone and technique of some of Frank’s finest playing. It would be hard to pick an MVP amongst these fine players: Billy Hulting excelled at odd-time marimba runs and trading percussion fills with drummer Joe Travers; Scheila Gonzalez’s eerie ability to accompany her saxophone playing on the keyboards; lead singer Ben Thomas, who was able to channel just about every singer from Frank’s past, including a raspy Captain Beefheart shout through a megaphone for their closing number Hot Rats.
Opening with their show with thunderclaps and a theatrical curtain drop, Dream Theater immediately delivered the goods with A Nightmare to Remember. Two other songs came from their latest album and the rest of their set was a fairly good cross section of their repertoire, my favorites being selections from the A Mind Beside Itself suite from Awake. Keyboardist Jordan Rudess always seems to have a new toy to show off and this time it was in the form of a passage played on the touchscreen of an iPhone running the Bebot application. Everyone’s playing was flawless and the crowd was very receptive, especially to the twenty-minute-plus epic The Count of Tuscany.
