  • Wanted: live or alive?

    Dez 17 2009, 7h50 por rachieinacoma

    I don't love live albums. Somehow the shriek of ecstatic fans just make me all the more aware that I have missed out on yet another musical opportunity. It grates on my nerves and takes away from any shreds of enjoyment that I may have derived from the music itself - with two exceptions only:
    Jimi Hendrix Live at Monterey and Morrissey live at Earles Court.
    Those two have enough charisma and talent to shine through the fans noisome pestilence, to take me out of my pathetic disappointment and back into the songs. The fact that they sound even better live is a rarity in the few live recordings I have given any time to and as such, justify what I would otherwise class as a waste of time. Don't get me wrong, I have no problem with the live music experience itself, just the recordings.
    I think live music is absolutely a spectrum of wonderfuls - and endless possibilities for amazing polaroid like moments to relive for years to come. The thing I love the most about it is the fact that people gather together , traveling great distances sometimes to leave their differences at the door - their race, religion, postcodes, likes, dislikes... They willingly share a room with a bunch of strangers and their sweat to bond over their common appreciation for a band or artist. Then they share hours in this haze of enjoyment and music and lights and they each have their own unique experience - so all at once, in this room/hall/stadium there are hundreds/thousands of universes just registering their own little nuances and moments whilst enjoying the same beats and sounds simultaneously, and yet taking something different away from it all at once. It's incredible. Perhaps they don't all think as deeply on it as I do - but no live show is ever going to be exactly the same, regardless of the set list. And the chances of the crowd on any one particular night, ever managing to meet all under the same roof again are unlikely to say the least. Music unites the people. I'm sure I've said it before. It brings us together, we just don't always realise it. It's our glue.
    Yes, I'm the wide eyed freak gazing around hopelessly looking narcotized but buzzing purely off the romantic notion of being IN the moment. Ugh.
    I think the idea of recording these moments is futile and the wonderment of the original and precious minutes during and between songs can never be translated through any other medium than the present. It's just an inappropriate and poor second option to experience it recycled in time. It's not just because I feel I've missed out, it's in respect to the music. We all know we can't have the same euphoria that the moment and the music grants to the fan in the crowd - so why try? We should just make more of an effort to not miss out. We all know what happens when we try to relive Woodstock (= colossal failure).
    So in the spirit of live music and my opposition to live recordings here is my list of the top 5 artists I would happily gnaw off my arm to see live but for a myriad of possible reasons, have not yet done so:

    1. Kate Bush - she's amazing. She's fearless in her music and her art and the craft of self expression. I'm in awe of her.
    2. Sonic Youth - blow my mind continually, via recordings. I can only imagine their energy live. Plus the bragging rights would give way to street cred I've only ever dreamed about.
    3. David Bowie - because I love him. For the music.
    4.Tom Waits - the man is intense and irrevocably intriguing. and a musical genius. And he growls like an unearthly mystical creature of the night.
    5. Jimi Hendrix - the obsession never fades. He was my first real music infatuation and he opened up my mind, musically.

    Special mentions go to the following:
    Weezer - because I know I could sing along with the best of them and I'm certain at a Weezer show I could make at least 5 new friends.
    Joni Mitchell - because no one can write a song like she can.
    Morrissey - needs no explanation.
    Stevie Wonder - the man is Love and so is his music.
    Oh Mercy because I only just discovered them and am subsequently in love with. Can't stop playing the album Priveliged Woes

    I could gladly go on but I'd like to make it clear that there isn't' any music that I love, which I wouldn't want to see live. Or music which I don't love that I wouldn't be open to seeing if money and time were no factor. Although I would never EVER go to see Empire of The Sun live, even though I rather like the album Walking On A Dream. Because Luke Steele is just... well, he's an absolute toss.

    Disclaimer: All lists are subject to change with varying hormonal levels, general moodiness, new cd purchases and the such, as I feel it is certainly my right to do so, and as author of this journal entry, I of course get to make the rules. I'd also like to mention that I would have loved to have added Mr Michael Jackson (may he rest in peace) but did not want to desecrate his memory by jumping on the ever popular and rather heavy posthumous bandwagon.

    The Canadian Rock League

    It's now the end of Season 1, and we've seen six artists relegated, meaning they are dropped from the league system. This means we need six new artists to replace them!
    So, in this thread, please post your favourite six bands that meet the following criteria:

    1) Are a rock artist. This is defined as an artist that plays a style of music incorporated into the rock genre.

    This can be pop/rock, alternative rock, punk-rock, all forms of metal, acoustic rock (as an addition). This does not include standard pop such as girl bands, this does also not include stuff like electronica, although there may be exceptions, I will judge each case individually. If I am unsure as to whether an artist is a rock artist or not, I will use the Last.fm tags as my guide.

    2) Are Canadian. This is defined as originating from Canada.
    Originating is defined as:

    a) The artist or all or some members of the band of which the artist is comprised was born in Canada, as is the case with the majority of the bands in the competition.

    b) The artist was formed in Canada.

    c) The artist was formed elsewhere, but before striking a record deal and producing its first solid release, became based in the Canada.

    3) Did not already participate in the league in the last season. This means artists relegated this season.

    In basic terms, please choose your six bands, and check the following list to see if they are there. If they are, then they are not eligible to be voted for in this thread and you need to choose new ones.

    * Alanis Morissette
    * Alexisonfire
    * Annihilator
    * Arcade Fire
    * Avril Lavigne
    * Billy Talent
    * Cancer Bats
    * Comeback Kid
    * Cryptopsy
    * Danko Jones
    * Devin Townsend
    * Godspeed You! Black Emperor
    * Kataklysm
    * Nadja
    * Neil Young
    * Nickelback
    * Propagandhi
    * Protest the Hero
    * Rush
    * Silverstein
    * Simple Plan
    * Strapping Young Lad
    * Sum 41
    * Voivod

    4) Your band isn't in another country's rock artist league. This can happen where a band has multiple nationalities. Please check the leagues of the other nationalities of the band to see if they are in those bands.

    If your chosen artists do not meet these criteria, I will endeavour to inform you of this by shoutbox message or personal message, but ultimately you should try to meet these criteria to save us both the hassle.

    I will endeavour to update the vote counts as time progresses, however I'm making no promises due to time restraints. The best 2 bands of each genre (metal, punk and rock), wich are receiving the most votes will qualify.

    The deadline for this vote is the end of June. So, the 16th of January at 5pm (UTC). This is subject to change (change is most likely to be extention however).

    Please note that I do intend to, at some point, advertise this thread out across Last.fm to bring in new users. If you would like to get your favourite artists voted, perhaps you should bring in other users who like that artist to vote for them? ;)

    If I've missed anything out, I shall edit this thread, and post what changes I made additionally as a new post in this thread.

    Please use this thread for voting purposes only, if you would like to discuss what is going on, please use the group's shoutbox.

    If you want to change anything in your post make a new one and leave the old where it is, thx.

    Thanks for reading, and enjoy voting!

    Best Albums of '09:

    Tune-Yards - BiRd-BrAiNs
    This is certainly the best CD I've heard in a long, long time. Sonically it is something like The Microphones (circa The Glow pt 2) meets Joni Mitchell, with a dash of The Go! Team because why notThe "band" is really just one person whose main instruments are a ukulele and a sampler. The entire album was recorded and mixed on open source laptronica shareware (Audacity, if anyone is interested) in a livingroom and it is clippy and hissy and grating in places that are not at all endearing. If you aren't a lo-fi fan (or at least a lo-fi sympathiser), this album is probably not for you. But in just about every song there is this point where the vocals and the music and the samples all come togeather and everything merges and becomes transcendant and rich and amazing and personal. This is why I listen to music.

    Tiny Vipers - Life on Earth
    This CD is slow and sparse and beautiful. Again it's just one girl in the "band", but without all the technological trickery - just a girl, a guitar, and heavy doses of reverb. If you're impatient with music, you may be slitting your wrists before you get to track 5, but this disc was a good friend on some long lonely nights. Dreamer and the title track are jaw-droppingly good.

    New Rhodes - Everybody Loves A Scene
    Mark Twain once sarcastically said of Wagner that his music is better than it sounds. I think the opposite is true for New Rhodes. On the surface, this album is great. It is upbeat, fun Brit-pop that avoids the vapidity normally associated with those adjectives. But after several listens, I think the songs are only OK and lack a certain ineffable thing that keep this CD from being as good as it sounds. The album is enjoyable (otherwise I wouldn't put it in my best of list), but it doesn't live up to its potential to be something better. Maybe the next album from these guys will cross that threshold.

    Rural Alberta Advantage - Hometowns
    A fun, addictive album from the Middle of Nowhere, Canada. I must have listened to this CD at least 20 times in a row, which I basically never do. The songs are catchy, simple, and effecient and leave you wanting to take just one more spin before you switch discs. Every review of these guys seems to harp on the similarities between RAA and Neutral Milk Hotel, but I think aside from the singers voice, these guys owe more to fellow Canadians Arcade Fire than to anything from NMH.

    Gaslight Anthem - The '59 Sound
    Blah blah Jersey blah blah Springstein. Just listen to The Backseat. It's a great song for being just strait-up rock. I think these guys stay a little bit too much in-character (the character being late 50's rockabilly greasers) and consequently veer towards gimickry, but underneath that the album is really good. Seriously, listen to The Backseat.

    Honorable Mention:
    Twilight Sad - Forget The Night Ahead - This album is probably fantastic, I just haven't listened to it enough. The first two tracks are very good.
    Deer Tick - Born on Flag Day - It's no War Elephant.
    Various Artists - Dark Was The Night - Much as I dislike the Decemberists, I love their song on this album.
    Discovery - LP - This is older than 2009, but I like it anyway. A quirky, auto-tune-heavy collaboration between members of Ra Ra Riot and Vampire Weekend.
    Japandroids - Post-Nothing - A good album but the sound gets grating quickly. I would like this more if I were 10 years younger.

    Best of '09 Mixtape:

    1. Big Sleep - Pinkies - This song rocks so hard a broke a string on my air guitar trying to play along. Unfortunately, it is not reprentative of the rest of the album.
    2. Tune-Yards - TocarSunlight - This is not the best song on the album, but it's certainly the most user-friendly. If you can stomach this, check out the album.
    3. Japandroids - TocarYoung Hearts Spark Fire
    4. Get Well Soon - you/aurora/you/seaside
    5. Howling Bells - TocarTreasure Hunt
    6. New Rhodes - Everybody Loves a Scene
    7.Cut Off Your Hands - TocarHappy As Can Be "And your miiinneeeeee....."
    8. Rural Alberta Advantage - Don't haunt this place
    9. Gaslight Anthem - The Backseat
    10. Decemberists - Sleepless
    11. Voxtrot - Trepenation Party Possibly a new synthier direction for Voxtrot. Let's go with another album already.
    12. The Notwist - Gravity
    13. Scott Matthew - Tocarabandoned "I'm not special but it helped to know that someone thinks I am"
    14. The 1900s - When I Say Go
    15. Bill Callahan - Eid Ma Clack Shaw
    The guy from (smog) singing a song that sounds just like (smog).
    16. Kelsey Brown - TocarI'm A Creep And I'm Proud
    17. Joan as Police Woman - TocarTo Be Lonely
    18. Tiny Vipers - Dreamer

  • So, farewell then Borders bookshops

    So, farewell then Borders bookshops
    (The UK ones anyway)
    You were never very good.
    Phil worked there for a while
    He says that you treated staff
    With little respect
    And paid crap.
    He also worked at Virgin Megastores
    Maybe there is a pattern.

    I would often visit
    The Branch on Oxford Street
    To spend a penny when out shopping.
    No longer.

    You had a café
    And when I was on the dole
    I would go down and buy a large cup
    Of Coffee
    (Or an ice tea)
    And read one of your books
    That I would never buy.
    Then the café became a Starbucks
    And I stopped going.

    I do not think I will miss you
    And I think that other bookshops
    Will be cheering you departure.
    I am happy that you are having a sale though.
    I picked up;
    Joni Mitchell - Court and Spark
    Scott Walker - Scott 4
    These New Puritans - Beat Pyramid
    Vampire Weekend - Vampire Weekend
    The Beach Boys - Smiley Smile & Wild Honey
    Syd Barrett - The Madcap Laughs
    Red Snapper - Making Bones
    and Larrikin Love - The Freedom Spark
    all for Thirty Two Pounds and Twelve Pence
    Which isn't
    All that bad.

  • Review: Hayley Westenra - Winter Magic (album)

    Nov 28 2009, 15h36 por sayheyheyhey

    Review: Winter Magic - Hayley Westenra

    TocarThe Little Road To Bethlehem She has a beautiful voice, does Hayley, and it's floats beautifully around the delicate stings of this beautifully arranged track. 9.5/10

    TocarCarol Of The Bells This was the track that, on an album sampler, made us decide to buy this album. This is a really well known song and for any version to impress us at this juncture would be quite amazing. Yet Hayley's version is simply marvellous. 10/10

    TocarThe Christmas Song (Chestnuts Roasting On An Open Fire) Doesn't the inclusion of this song by anyone now make you groan and say 'oh no, do you have to?'. In fairness, Hayley's beautifully voice does make this old chestnut of a song sound somewhat fresh. If we'd never heard this song before, we might have given it top marks. However, this song really gets on our tits. Everybody sings it. Not as well as this, but still... 8/10

    TocarVeni Veni Emmanuel Stunning vocal and musical arrangement. If all hymns sounded like this, the Church might be onto a good marketing thing. Beautiful. 9/10

    TocarSilent Night A reasonably straightforward version of this one - probably the best version we've got on CD though. Well, what was the competition? Bros? Hayley wins hands down. 8.5/10

    TocarChristmas Morning From the first note, this sounds like something refreshingly new - and it is. This is one of a few tracks that Hayley herself actually co-wrote and... know what? She's written a future Christmas classic. This is beautiful. Delicate vocals, beautiful arrangements and just the right level of seasonal devices to comppliment rather than overkill this song. 10/10

    TocarSleigh Ride Another song which loads of people have covered. Spice Girls did a great version. Debbie Gibson has also done this. Hayley's version adds a jolly vibe and a delightful innocence. This is a very, very good version of a well-known song. 10/10

    TocarRiver This is the Joni Mitchell song. If Christmas music is not your bag, then head for this track. While a small number of the lyrics are seasonal, this track could quite happily be played all year round. Utterly, utterly gorgeous, you'd be sure never to tire of hearing this. Those who do not like this track have no soul. 10/10

    TocarThe Little Drummer Boy Another instance of 'oh no, did you have to?'. Quiz question. Name at least ten people who have recorded a version of this song. See. Easy. Again, Hayley's version is easily one of the better versions of this well known song, however. 8/10

    TocarCorpus Christi Carol Gentle and quite beautiful version of this song. If only we were religious. We're not. 8/10

    TocarAll With You The second of the tracks that Hayley has co-written. Its a very nice song, indeed. 9.5/10

    TocarThe Coventry Carol It's the voices that do the talking in this one - imagine a beautifully candle-lit carol servie in a huge Abbey or Cathedral. That's this song. It is beautifully done. 9/10

    TocarWinter's Dream Perhaps one of the most beautifully arranged tracks on the album, this is all beautiful voices and exquisite strings. 10/10

    TocarPeace Shall Come The third track in which Hayley has writing credits, if you were looking for a more upbeat and original festive sound, this is one that we would recommend highly. This even got us dancing. Well, foot tapping and head-nodding in rhythm anyway. Very good track. 10/10

    It's Only Christmas Time (with Ronan Keating) Whether or not you'll like this one is very much dependent on whether you like the former Boyzone singer. He's got writing credits on this on and this does sound like a Ronan song. Out of all of the tracks on this album, we can imagine this will be the one that will be picked up for all of those many Christmas compilation albums. Which would be a shame as, while this is nice enough, it's not the best song on the album. Nice, but not nice-est. 9/10

    Overall Rating: 9.5/10

  • My Hummingbird 100 Female Songs of all-time which I voted for + some more

    Nov 17 2009, 17h55 por BlackCoffeeDuck

    This from the HOTTEST FEMALE SONGS!!! Kind-off like Triple J's Hottest 100 of All-time early in the year but only female artists because there was very few women in Triple J's countdown. It's run by a new beer called Hummingbird and some pay TV channel (I don't know which one because I don't watch it). It's a cool idea and I found it so hard to cut it down just to ten in the end so I just made my own 100 tracks from my favourite female artists.

    My Top Ten Votes
    1. Portishead - Glory Box
    2. Kate Bush - TocarCloudbusting
    3. Sarah Blasko - Tocar{Explain}
    4. Nina Simone - TocarSinnerman
    5. Fiona Apple - TocarFast as You Can

    7. Cat Power - Cross Bones Style
    8. Beth Orton - TocarStolen Car
    9. PJ Harvey - TocarThis Is Love
    10. Magic Dirt - Dirty Jeans

    This was very, very, very, very hard (have I made it clear how hard this was?) But I picked songs which I could listen to on repeat which I have done in the past (not here on last.fm yet). Most tracks are from the 90's too (I grew-up in that decade, if you haven't all ready guessed). It seems like last.fm's journals are made up of long lists of songs so I've joined in again with my very, very long short list of songs that didn't make it into the top ten. These songs can be any thing that I love really It's from A to Z (well it's Y really, then V). It's selected from the list of tracks which are on their website but I've added a few of my own ones at the end. If you have no idea what I'm talking about go here and read all about it (there's only 4 days left to vote so hop too it).

    Sister Rosetta Tharpe - TocarDown By The Riverside
    The Triffids - Raining Pleasure
    The White Stripes - In the Cold, Cold Night
    Vashti Bunyan - TocarRainbow River

    So that is it. It wasn't so hard really (but cutting it down to ten was). I've most likely missed something which I'll remember later and be kicking myself about but I'm pretty happy with this mix. It seems my favorite female singer songwriter is Beth Gibbons with my number 1 track in my top ten. Plus two more Portishead songs and one from Beth Gibbons & Rustin Man project album. If you don't know she wrote My Secret for Jane Birkin a few years ago too. That adds up to five tracks out of one hundred which is not many but more that anyone else.

    Anyway what do you think??? I liked writing these journal entries but I do like reading you comments and It's also the only way I can tell if anyone has been reading or looking at them. Thanks and bye for now.
